AW Good evening, Commanders, and welcome to the official Elite Dangerous Twitch stream. I'm Adam Woods, and I'm one of the producers on Elite Dangerous. and with me tonight I have Michael Brookes,

MB Hi there, I'm Michael Brookes, Executive producer on ED.

AW Thanks for joining us, and tonight I will be playing on the most recent beta release as a player basically, out there on the live servers with you guys, so take it easy if you find me. I have kitted myself out a little bit with a Viper and a few credits. I'm going to be doing some of the missions out there, while Mike answers some of your questions from our live Twitch chat stream. So get on there and we'll answer as many questions as we can. So lets go straight into the game. I'm docked at Beagle 2 in the Asellus Primus system. I'm going to launch and I'm going to jump into another star system and try and pick up some missions from somewhere else. I want to see if anyone's out there at the moment and is going to run into me.

MB I get the feeling you might get ambushed; let's see how it goes.

AW Let's see, noone knows, I didn't release where we were going to start from though - hopefully noone knows. Let's pull the landing gear up..

MB QUESTION about mining. ANSWER Well, mining is a bit of a ways off at the moment. There are some other aspects of gameplay that we are going to be focusing on first. But certainly, mining is in the plan. Before release.

MB QUESTION What are our favourite weapons? ANSWER Well I remember answering this question on the last one, a couple of months ago, and for me it's still the Multicannons.

AW I think I answered the same: Multicannons. They sound great, they feel great, and they've got a nice level of skill involved with them.

MB I am looking forward to playing with mines, I think they are going ot be a lot of fun.

AW <still on his lonesome> Let's take a look and go over to Eranin, shall we? That's were most players start when they sign up. I'm going to dock and accept my first mission as well.

MB QUESTION About exploiting us. How will you handle someone in a starter ship building bounty, with a friend who's a bounty hunter, letting him kill them over and over for the bounties? Answer: well that kind of obvious behaviour would be tracked through our stat gathering, so that would be flagged and we will respond to that as we deem best.

MB COMMENT Sound design is the best. RESPONSE I would have to agree with that, our sound design team has been doing a fantastic job, and I think they still have quite a bit to come yet. They keep surprising us with each audio check in.

AW <In his search for companionship, attempts to get a hug from the star Eranin, gets knocked out of SC with a Too Close> Just want to point out that one of the additions in the last beta was the addition of flares and expulsions from the stars now, which gradually change over time, making them incredible.

MB Theres a cool thing I saw from Nasa, they released the sounds of the various planets. I forwarded that to the audio team, they said "yeah yeah we're already on it"

AW Yeah they'd already got it. So once I get my Frameshift back online, I'm going to escape the mass lock of this star, and try and get to Azeban City, to pick up my first mission. Still haven't seen anyone yet. It's very quiet. Eerily, it's too quiet around there.

MB <answering unseen question> Don't worry, we always tell the audio and QA teams when there's pizza because they have their own little space, they never get left out

AW Everyone gratefully partakes in the pizza that you guys seem to send us.

MB QUESTION Will you balance different play styles so they can progress? Yes, as we add new mechanisms for making money or playing the game, we balance them against what's already there. We'ra always balancing how one thing earns against the other. At the moment it's relatively easy to earn money through trading, which, is fine for at the moment, but we need to make sure that earning money through exploration or combat or whatever is perfectly feasible within the game.

MB QUESTION Will Empire stations look different? So we've already had a glimpse of the new Rich Interior, if you go to the Wyrd station, it looks a lot posher than the standard interiors do. I love the promenades...

AW interjecting It's a lot cleaner, isn't it... the lakes, and the...

MB ...The greens and the rest areas, it's all quite posh.

AW approaching Azeban City, we're going to dock with Azeban now and see..

MB QUESTION Asking about comets. YEs, so comment are something we have in mind. Yes, we generate them with systems but we'll leave that as a little surprise for you, what we do with comets when the game progresses.

AW There we are, coming in, not too far now, 9 clicks, going to throttle back a bit now so we don't overshoot, I've had a horrible habit of overshooting these last couple of days, so let's take a nice cautious approach. Almost at 1000 clicks now, there we are, 1500..12.11, let's drop out.

MB Just saw a question missed it, but never mind. <mildly peevish> I'm not sure they're even talking to us, some of them. That's fine, we'll let them chat, you carry on playing the game.

MB QUESTION What plans do have to manage the Friends, Group and Block lists - putting htem in alphabetical order would help. Yes, there's already some changes going in to highlight anything that's new changed since you last looked at it, that's going into the build at the moment. Quite a popular question in the last few months about whether people can own stations. At the moment Elite isn't really about that executive level of gameplay where you own stations, capital ships or whatever. Certainly the Elite universe is capable of supporting that kind of gameplay, so it might be something that we look into later. but it's certainly not something that we're currently looking at for Elite.

AW So here we are at Azeban, with the beautiful Viper. It doesn't take me very long to take the trek over there, so let's press Docking.

MB I'm enjoying the Type 6 at the moment.

AW The type 6, so that's the one for you is it? I think it's just the ferociousness of the Type 9. <stops himself> Err, the Viper.

MB Yes, I did some pirate hunting in it the other day and it's good fun, 4 Multicannons blazing and chewing away.

AW (hopefully) There we are - it looks like Azeban's quite busy tonight. I'm in a queue for a docking request

MB QUESTION What's your stance on PVP at the moment? ED is, well it's Dangerous - PVP is certainly an expected behaviour in the game. WHat has been missing up until the most recent builds is the consequences. It's one thing trying to pirate another person, taking their goods and flying away, but just murdering people randomly should definitely have consequences, so I think there was popular a thing for hanging around stations, trying to shoot people as they go in, well, they won't like that any more and the station will open fire on you. So the more we can layer in those consequences to the actions that people do in the game. We don't want to just prohibit people from taking these actions, that's taking away the point of being able to play the game your way.

AW <turned away by the Azeban bouncers for wearing trainers>. Azeban is not letting me in tonight, so I'm going to head out to another system. Let's go to, where can i jump from here Aselluus Primus.

MB QUESTION about progress in (unclear) group chat? Obviously like any new feature, we're still knocking it into shape a bit, some of the full functionality isn't quite there yet, that's certainly a focus over the next few weeks, to ensure that's much more robust, to allow people to communicate more effectively within their groups.

MB QUESTION I found a purple gas giant the other day. ANSWER was probably a methane world. We have a system in there that takes the temperature and distances and baiscally collates all teh information for a planet and appllies the correct colour schemes for it. I think it needs a bit of tweaking, but it means that we're getting a bit of variety for the gas giants, which we didn't have before.

AW <realising that this whole station clubbing thing isn't going to work, settles for a park bench under a streetlight> I tell you what, we've got a Nav beacon on our way here, let's see if anyone's there. Oh, hello, I think we've found our first human player online here. We've got a supercruise person. Let's give a shout out to CMDR.... I can't pronounce it...

MB So that was one of the big additions of Beta 1... <tries to pronounce djurmurmel> Druridge Mervyl? He probably doesn't know we're here, he's just playing the game

AW And then they have someone else following them. He's in a Hauler, and I assume, let's check, I think we're still heading in the direction of Beagle 2. We're not going to do any voice comms tonight, we're just going to concentrate on talking to you.

MB QUESTION DK2 news? ANSWER We're still looking into it. There's been some tweaks to the latest SDK, which means that we need to take a deeper look at what's going on. As soon as we have support for it we'll be putting it into the build.

AW <tutting> It looks like our Commander has just dropped out of supercruise at Beagle 2 Landing, so hopefully if I can get over there quick enough, I can follow him on the docking approach. <Tries text chat> Oh yeah, he is still there in supercruise.

MB Give him a hello.

MB QUESTION What can you tell us about planetary landings and contents? ANSWER Nothing new, it's one of the big expansions were planning for the game, and I'm sure you saw the lovely image from Concept with the Cobra, I do know that the idea is to come at it in stages, so rather than waiting to have everything perfect and introducing planetary landings in one big gow, we'll come at it in stages so you will be able to do landing on airless moons for example, and as we add new features and surfaces we'll expand where you can interact.

AW I'll just move in under this big gas giant here. Taking a nice cautious approach again, because I don't really want to overshoot and have to come back on myself. He's definitely going in to dock here. I wonder if he's got a belly full of cargo?

MB QUESTION Is it intended for stations to be able to attack someone who assaults another player while outside the no fire zone? I have been noticing it does, so what is the point of having a no fire zone if it doesn't change anything? ANSWER So the no fire zone is specific to the station, but don't forget that it is situated within a jurisdiction. So if you attack someone and break the law, you will get a local police response. Just because you're 200m from the police station and you're beating someone up, and you're outside their zone, doesn't mean that they're not going to get involved.

AW <moving pips around> I've just been interdicted, I'm going to get on the defensive, check these guys out, deploy my weapons. Looks like it's an eagle, it's an authority craft. I'll put my weapons away, submit to a scan, I've got nothing to hide. Yet. There we are, frame shift's back online, been scanned, I think I've got the clear to go. So I'm going to leave these guys to it.

MB QUESTION Please implement a way to jump right to a UI menu and lock your view while using TrackIR. So i'm not quite sure what the question means, but put a ticket in and we'll take a look.

AW So I'm going back into supercruise for the last leg of the journey to the starport. Back at Beagle 2.

MB QUESTION about any Imperial ships during beta? ANSWER So the area where we are in space in Beta is nowhere near the Empire, so we're kind of balancing the content to the Federal and Independent areas at the moment. We may see an Imperial ship nearer the end, but it may be later on. We'll see.

AW Just dropping out now. See if we can catch up with that Commander, see if we can sneak in and see where he docked. I pulled a brilliant stunt the other day, where an Anaconda was docking and I snuck in underneath him at the same time. I think some guys kind of get annoyed at people doing that, but I thought I would be a bit cheeky.

MB QUESTION Can I talk about reputation and rankings? ANSWER I guess so, they are two separate things in that the ranking is your perceived, well, it's from the original game, from Mostly Harmless all the way up to Elite. The difference is that with this game you can achieve those ranks with other activities besides just killing people. The reputation is more about how you interact with the factions around you. So if you keep going around murdering people in Federal space, you will actually not be welcome in Fedral space, so you may try to dock and they'll say No, you're not welcome. It builds into the idea that the actions that you do in the game have consequences. That's the important thing about a game world like this, you are playing your own story, that story only gets interesting if things happen in response to the things that you do.

AW So we're back in Beagle 2

MB QUESTION Any word on when Exploration stuff will be implemented in Beta? ANSWER Err, soon. Or soon-ish. For me, it's the big thing about the game, and it's something that I'm really looking forward to playeing.

AW There's the First Great Exploration or Expedition group on the forums as well isn't there?

MB Yes, trying to get to the centre of the galaxy. That's going to be quite some undertaking. I'll be impressed if they manage that

AW <looking at missions screen> So what have we got? We've got long distance trasnport, megahaul, long distance transport. Can I, Ooh, if I fuel up...

MB QUESTION Later on, the universe expands in real time. Things like new stations etc build outwards. I also hear that there might not be any stations or
life.. ANSWER True, there's a bubble of space that's around 120LY in radius around Sol that is quite well known for human space, beyond that you will encounter the odd settlement or station, but then eventually you will reach space where there are no humans. But what we want to do is follow people as they explore, and where there is some definite activity, we will start seeding stations to allow longer and longer range exploration into the galaxy.

AW <showing off his dance moves> So there you go, a little slow, precise movement past the Cobra. So the three missions available at Beagle 2 were for long haul transports, which are not very good in my little Viper. So let's jump out, I think we could get to I Bootis from here... Dahan... Asellus Primus... Let's go to Dahan.

MB QUESTION So will there we wormholes, shortcuts you can use? ANSWER No.

AW <laughs> Just no.

MB QUESTION How much is DB involved in this game? ANSWER The simple answer is it's his game, he's the vision holder, we meet up with him daily. We have to justify any design decisions we make to him. Yes, it's very much his game.

AW Fully involved is the short answer to that, really. Ok, we're going to head out to Dahan Gateway, see what missions are available there for my little Viper. Still eerily quiet, really. You guys are all going to bunch up and take me down somewhere. Maybe we'll open it up towards then end and try and have a fight.

MB QUESTION Is this the final version of Supercruise? ANSWER The basic mechanics are there. The big things that are missing for me are seeing the AI using Supercruise, that sort of life - it is quite barren compared to normal space.

AW <interrupting> Quick shout out, we've got another player here! A sidewinder - CMDR Imperial Jedi - you're lucky to get that name I think, that would be taken quite quickly. So hello to you! So let's carry on to the Unidentified Signal Source. Oh, it's disappeared

MB QUESTION WHat controller are you using to play this? Hotas or gamepad? ANSWER (AW)X52 now. MB I tend to play it more on XB360 controller, just because it's a lot easier when I'm at my desk.

AW At my desk I've got the Cyborg Fly 5, it's not fully HOTAS because it's all on one stick but it has its own throttle, it's a nice stick to use.

MB QUESTION When will the AI learn how to dock properly, ie not lingering in the corridor or moving in a weird manner. ANSWER: It's intended to get better - at least it doesn't fly through the station, that's all I can say. <chuckles>

AW <waxing about Starwars> We've got another Unidentified source here, so let's check that out. Now that we gave the shoutout to CMDR Imperial Jedi. Isn't that some kind of thing Imperial, Jedi - you were Sith, weren't you?

MB That's another game...

AW Oops, overshooting.

MB QUESTION Aren't you worried that group mechanics will split the community? ANSWER The game simulation is based on everyone who interacts with the game world. so it doesn't matter if you're playing in the Solo group, a Private Group, or the All Open group, your interactions will all affect the game world. THe intent was that people can play the game their way. We want to encourage people to play in the open group as much as possible, but conversely we didn't want to block it off for people who just want to play it on their own.

AW We've got a mineral collector here, he's one of the special guys that if you've got some cargo, he'll buy it off you at a good price IIRC. But, I'm not trading today, so let's continue on to Dahan.

MB That's another aspect of the game that we're keen to expand upon, these incidental encounters so it's not just a big space station that you're dealing with, but there are smaller things going on that you can find and interact with.

AW <jumping to dahan>

MB Someone's claiming that the Empire wasn't always evil. I don't think we need to go into that.

AW Not too far from Dahan gateway nowhere

MB Is the game staying on one megaserver? Architecturally no, it's cloud-based. For the world, it is one galaxy. Everyone plays in the same galaxy.

AW Smithy's Claim... little moon?

MB QUESTION Will you be releasing a lot of new content in standard beta, or will the next big content release be Gamma? ANSWER There will be more content and features in SB.

MB Someone's claiming you should go fight in the rings of Dahan.

AW I really want to get a mission first, do a mission, then maybe we'll do a skirmish after. I could get a bounty on my head, see who can take me down the quickest. Just sit by a starport...

MB QUESTION What products do I use on my beard? ANSWER None, purely natural

AW I saw one of you players get the Pirate Lord on Youtube, so well done, congratulations. Your Anaconda was smoking and sparking.

MB QUESTION How close to finished is the Galaxy Map in this beta? ANSWER Probably not a great deal needs to change. The main thing will be adding a route planner so you can plot multi-jump routes, and then tweaking the information you can see to help trading or help with missions. The other big thing that's being finalized is the in-system data, which will become more relevant when the in-system map becomes available, which is also, hopefully, "Soon".

MB QUESTION All the expert players are going HOTAS, so will you keep the game accessible to gamepad players, or is a £100 investment the gateway to the real ED? ANSWER So I play the game mostly on a controller, as it's more convenient when I'm at my desk, and I h ave to say it's just as playable. So the HOTAS feels a lot better, but that's not because you're any better with it, it's just part of the experience, but yes, it's more than playable with a controller

AW And mouse and keyboard

MB QUESTION WIll systems have multiple systems like in Elite 2? ANSWER Yes certainly, larger systems will have more than one station in them.

AW Let's get some more fuel. I think there's acombat mission here. Argh, it just ticked over. Missed it..

MB QUESTION Will there be more in space to explore that we can stumble on, or is it just from one cube to another? ANSWER yes there will be more hidden things for you to stumble upon

AW So I've taken one mission on, which was trying to find some Leopidolite in time, but I wanted a combat one, really. Let's see what else there is... I can't get to this combat mission, it's too far away. Well, how about this. Let's take my chances

MB QUESTION Do you plan to license the Cobra engine to other devs? ANSWER Well I think that's a question for our Business Development. Email him.

MB QUESTION When will we see engine upgrades - sacrifice some cargo space for the ability to jump a bit further? ANSWER The ability to upgrade your engines is one of the big things that we're lacking at the moment. Now we have fuel in there, there is more need to be able to make that choice. We want to be able to make ships more specialized by sacrificing parts. Eg Explorer trades engines for cargo. During the course of Beta that's something that will be added.

AW Got a bit more traffic coming in now, there's a human player in a Cobra - going incredibly fast, I might add. Wondering if anyone fancies coming and having a bit of a nibble at me. Commander he's still there.

MB Don't grief him just outside the station.

AW I'll put my weapons away. Oooh, that was a bit close!

MB QUESTION Chango dock seems a bit crowded and sometimes takes a lot o ftime to get clearance. ANSWER Ultimately people will be starting in different systems, we've got the Kickstarter systems to begin with. And I think there's also I hate to admit, a bit of an issue with the AI securing docking pads, we've fixed that.

AW Let's go to Morgor, shall we? See what's going on in Morgor. I'll keep that mission open, but I don't think I'll have time to find the commodity tonight. Here we are, let's go through.

MB QUESTION Are you still aiming for 32 players per instance? ANSWER Ideally we'd like to get more, but it's a question of balancing technology with the game experience people are having. It might be the case that sessions can handle more or less players, depending on the quality of the session. Simple answer: yes.

AW Got another player in supercruise here with me. CMDR G BALTAR.

MB Gaius Baltar? Today's just full of IP infringements.

MB Are we near Wyrd? People asking about the beautiful station interior.

AW Let's just go into the galaxy map and see.

MB We're getting the "One does not simply hyperspace into Morgor" joke repeatedly now. And it's walk into Morgor, anyway

AW No, in my ship I don't have the range to get into Wyrd, sadly, so I'm going to go and dock with Morgor and see what we can get there.

MB QUESTION will you be able to float around your ship in EVA, and would this be a novel part of gameplay? ANSWER Well we'd need to get the walking around y our ship done first. The original ideas included EVA repairs, but I would say that we'd need to have something significant to be worthwhile. That's one of the things I enjoy, just playing it, let alone working on it, is that I can just cruise around, and some of the sights are awesome, like the contact binary at I Bootis.

AW Like just now, I'm travelling to this Unidentified Source, but there's a star, just there on my left hand side, looking beautiful. I'm a bit mesmerised by the stars.

MB And for astronomy geeks, that's pretty cool

AW I was going to go and dock with the nearby starport, but I've got another Unidentified Signal Source, so let's see what we've got here. Let's just approach it, get within dropout range. Let's deploy weapons, in case it's someone nasty. Oh, here we are: "FEAR ME!" Yarr, we've got a pirate lying in wait here. Let's go, we've got systems, weapons, got some heat seeking missiles, two pulse lasers. SO I should, hopefully be able to make light work of this guy, he's only in a Sidey. <pew pew ensues>

MB QUESTION will there be any planetary data that we can acquire and get credit for the discovery? ANSWER That's certainly part of the Explorer gameplay that we plan on including. That comes in two parts really, there's the in-system data like comets, moons and planets. And there's finding dark systems, so you can find stepping stones between far-away systems.

MB QUESTION Will there be comets in Elite: Dangerous. Well as I've just mentioned: Yup. <To Adam:> Have you just murdered somebody?

AW No, he was a pirate. Before that, I got a 350Cr bounty voucher, which I can go and cash in in a Federation jurisdiction. So I can stop off at the nearby Starport and cash it in. That was cool, and it was a pretty easy fight, I am quite heavily armed. Got another commander here, got a Hauler, who have we got. Oh, it's the same guy again, is he following me around?

MB QUESTION Will pirates offer different bouties when killed? ANSWER So that comes back to the ranking that I talked about earlier. There is a concept that the AIs will have their own ranks as well, and that should feed in to the level of bounty that you get for them.

AW QUESTION About how to disable small ships without blowing them up? ANSWER Well you can already do that by targeting their subsystems. So if you target their cargo hatch, and make it malfunction, you can make it start to spew out canisters and all that.

MB Commander Ryan is at Romaneks. Someone else is there as well

AW That's where we're heading now. Oh, we're going to go there are we?

MB QUESTION Will mission locations be less vague? ANSWER THat will depend on the missions. There will be a hunting game where you have to locate where people are heading, and that comes into when we involve the AI more iwth the high level decision and link it in more with the background and the events generation. But yeah, some should be quite easy to find. What is referred to is the combat locations, which does require some hunting, but I do think that is perfectly reasonably, you can't have everything handed to you on a plate. You have to hunt some of this stuff down.

AW So let's take a dip in, let's go and dock with Romaneks Folly Let's hang around outside.

MB QUESTION Will it be possible to follow a friend in a group out of supercruise? ANSWER Yes, that's certainly the intention, and it's on the list for getting working during Beta, so Soonish.

AW As we've followed this guy for quite a while, we've even managed to catch him in normal space

MB QUESTION How long does debris last in space? Is there scope for garbage men to go out and clean up? ANSWER It lasts as long as the session lasts, and I don't think we'll be populating the systems with it. We're already tracking enough objects in every system.

AW I really enjoy formation flying in Elite. When I do it, I really hope noone thinks that I'm trying to grief people. I'm just like flying alongside other people, putting on an aerobatic display like the Red Arrows.

MB That's something I'd like to add, smoke generators on hardpoints.

AW QUESTION Will we be adding new weapon types, such as the mine layer shown in the Beta trailer? ANSWER Yes, through beta we'll be adding.. the focus is on defensive measures like the mine layer. So you've got options for people who want to escape a fight.

AW So we're docking now, and I'm going to replenish my heatseeking missiles, because I think it's time for me to get a bounty and go and hang out somewhere and see if someone can take me down. But first I want to be armed to my teeth.

MB QUESTION Will I (MB) be going to Fantasticon? ANSWER Yes, I believe I am, I've been invited and I'll be there next weekend.

AW Oooh, hit the control tower. That wasn't very good piloting, was it?

MB Yeah, letting the team down.

AW Performed flawlessly before. Bringing it down gently, So, starport services, let's arm up with heatseekers. Munitions, there we are. Okay, right, let's do this then. Gonna launch, I'm a bit nervous about this actually. We will go, I thin kthere's a nav beacon nearby, I'm going to get a wanted status from the station, and then I'm going to go and sit at the nav beacon.

MB I'll translate that as: Adam's going to get blown up by the space station.

AW No, I'm not going to, I'm going to find this guy. Oh, I@Go! go! go! go! go!

MB QUESTION Will there be external camera views so we can admire our ship skins and amazing views. ANSWER There's certainly a desire to have some method for showing different views besides the in-cockpit view. There certainly won't be playable 3rd person external views.

AW Right, I got a fine, but I didn't get a wanted status. I'm at Romaneks Folly, in.. <checks map> Morgor. I'm a bit too worried about being blown up by the starport... Let's go into SC, see if there's a nav beacon nearby.

MB QUESTION Will any ships have transparent floors. ANSWER No but we do have some ships with quite open cab styles. Each manufacturer has a different style of cockpit, and one of them in particular, the Lakons, have some quite nice gaps in the floors so you can look down, quite handy when you are docking.

AW Right, here's the challenge then. I'm 13km from Romaneks Folly. Going to wait here and see if someone wants to take me on. We're out of the stations' fire zone. You will take a bounty on your head, but maybe I will as well. Let's see who turns up. 18km, just going to wait

MB QUESTION If the galaxy has already been procedurally generated, how will you go about inserting future content? ANSWER We have a system of overrrides, currently we have 140000 authored systems that use real star data, but we also have a system that allows the generation of content based on those systems. So when we add new areas like for example the Thargoids, content relevant to their area would be filtered in based on tohse overrides
