Oh the shame of it

The image is an part of the unrequested Steam report on my use of that platform in 2023.

Several comments to make:
  • it's a Steam report and therefore inherently unreliable ;)
  • there's a mistake in the legend, 'Windows' should read 'Mac dongle'
  • look at all those lovely games on a non-gaming platform ;)
Merry Christmas (or celebration of your choice) everyone!

I should be jealous...I didn't get a pie chart on my Steam report...just lots of numbers suggesting I would be better off playing most of my games on the PS5 or Xbox

My report was very unremarkable, not even humerous.

2023 was more interesting for me though..

- The first year i positively adopted a game controller (since the 16 bit era anyway). I've been able to use one effectively for the last 3-4 years maybe, such limited play and general dislike made the road to functional take a few decades. What did it was diablo 4... I only bought it on console, and it just so happened that the controller gameplay imo is very much better than kbm. The games are designed for it and it works really well. This combined with getting my first xbox controller this year (forgot the reason why even) and falling in love with AA batteries and limited controllers and custom faceplates.. i'm very much controller friendly now.

- The first year (and maybe last) where consoles make the pc ecosystem look bad. First i fully acknowledge people in their early 20's exist, and spending money redundantly is a rite of passage.. but being past that.. pc hardware is embarassing compared to what you get in the console space. The fact that the only feature they have is higher end ray tracing which only comes on one game... The console space is on equal footing now. quite unexpected.

- My old pc is still running. Just last week it started to stutter, and after running at much deterioated fps, finally refused to post. I don't know if you've ever built your own pcs.. but for me, whenever my pc doesn't boot, i usually go into a full bodied sweat. Because you know it could be anything. After so long, im not that helpless, i do have a spare power supply and gpu so can at least test those.. and i did.. it was that experience again sweating uncomfortably with a case on its side and an octopus of cables from other power supplies going into it.. real entertainment for my 1yr old daughter.. anyways.. that was the most dramatic 2 day experience to tell me that.... oh uh.... my cmos battery had run out again.

Merry chrismas to whoevers left.

ps. Bonus: Boot camp. So the last 16 inch intel macbook pro is a lemon. The vrms overheat at a very low level of sustained load. Apple seem to have this covered on the mac side, but naturally the bootcamp drivers are unlimited and cause thermal throttling within minutes. I took 200mhz off the gpu, i was a bit hesitant to be too agressive there as you need a gpu.. recently discovered that lowering the turbo from 4.5 to 2.8 reduced the cpu wattage enough to find balance. Fingers crossed. Its sensitive to ambient temperature so not an exact science. But glad its stable for d4 and swtor anyway.
