How do I exit once I have landed? Do I need something else on my ship?

And take a look between your legs for the 'Deploy' option.

You need a Hanger and an SRV in one of the slots. You can then exit ship to SRV and deploy on planet surface.

buy a hangar module and put a vehicle bay in it, you can find those modules at stations
