OK FDEV time for atmo landings

At this rate, I’m sincerely wondering which will happen first: ED Mars landings or real Mars landings?

Could this be the next space race?

Environmental vandalism.
I’m with you there. I want proper Mars, not Earth-y Mars.

I’m not prepared to live in a world where Olympus Mons is an island.

Yeah after reading Red Mars I was totally looking forward to exploring the glorious landscape, but...denied.

Progress update from FDev? Yes please :)

I like to know things.
I don't like not knowing things.

So please, just tell us the things FDev.

Although this is "only" a water world, there is sufficient detail visible to show cloud heights .....

In anticipation of something ? ..... surely not the Mamba ? ..... no surely not  But it's nice to see how much detail is already in game, without us 'noticing' .... in anticipation of a bigger update later, I expect.

Once they get the new terrain generation I don't think there will be much of an excuse not to.
One issue I predict will be how they decide to handle the higher-G planets. My thoughts are that thrusters should be able to switch to an atmospheric burn mode, which will make them more powerful, but they don't burn as clean so they use more fuel. I think that this could present an interesting mechanic for planets with thick atmospheres that you might need to collect fuel before you can escape the planet. Also there should be heating mechanics as you descend.

If they make waterworlds landable I want the Moray Starboat. A sub and a spacecraft...Oh yeah.

 :D

Atmospheric planets are likely to start with planets like Mars and Venus; rocky, lifeless worlds with complex atmospheric conditions and weather. I expect that to arrive a lot sooner than 2020.

Worlds with animals, liquid and plants are certain to be a lot later down the line.

What he said.
Star Citizen has a limited number of worlds that can be visited, so every single planet can be handcrafted aber procedural creation and worked on. In Elite that process completely relies on procedural creation for millions of planets. For me it's totally understandable that it takes a lot of time to create a reliable system that takes into account a few of the more important scientific factors like composition, tidal forces, distance and type of sun, age and so on.
Star Citizen is a completely different game. I really don't understand the comparison.

I second this. :D
