Okay, what are the best head tracking options right now?

One word in your post would/should put off any potential ED Tracker buyer over TrackIR??????

'Virtually'.

If cost is a concern then go ED Tracker, if you can afford something that just works and works and want something that other trackers seek to emulate then i'll say it one more time

TRACKIR

Nuff said!

Personally I don't think the extra price is worth it for Track IR 5. Especially now that there is a wireless version available.

Fine if money isn't an issue, but then you could go for full VR instead, which AFAIK is far superior to Track IR or EdTracker.

Freetrack. You get perfect tracking, with six degrees of freedom, for about 50 bucks. You have to build your own cap or clip in order to acomodate the infrared leds, but that was even fun for me.
Edit: pm if you are interested, you´ll need some tips

Really it appears to fall into a few options

Premium = TrackIR... which is £150-180 depending where you get it from - I just did a check with a dealer as linked on the manufacturer webpage and thats what i get.

Full movement, smooth, pretty amazing (iv heard and seen videos showing it, iv not got one myself)

Mid = EDTracker Pro

I have one of these, only had mine about 2-3 weeks and Id say its really great. Install the software, plug in, do an initial calibration and you are done. Few dials and controls in game, but a great experience overall. You can see me using it in this video, note that this video is also right after i got my new PC setup and that includes the desk along with it, haha so if i appear to be looking slightly off centre, its actually because I occasionally shift my sitting position. Anyway you can get a taste of what it is like.

Please no comments about how crap my clipper setup is... its a relatively new commander with almost no engineering access (just did the FSD to make the ride out to colonia less painful)

Cost £47

Low - Freetrack - free - to as much as you wanna spend

Iv never had much success with it, iv tried the printed shapes, iv tried pietrack for a phone gyro (trying to do what edtracker does), the only thing I had not done is the camera and LED setup to do a poor man's TrackIR... So if you have access to a 3D printer, soldering iron etc (however flashy you wanna make it) it could probably (in my limited experience) get a tiny bit better than EDTracker but you really have to try at it.

So if you want something you can buy, plug in and just work....

On a £50 budget -> EDTracker... its awesome! Probably the best £50 iv spent on a computing accessory ever
Not on a budget -> TrackIR, but personally id not drop 150 it when ultimately i am planning on a VR setup

Yeah, I'm sold on EDtracker Pro now. £50 isn't a lot of money in this age of gaming, and I see the product being a game changer for my ED experience.

I'll place an order as soon as my budget allows. Thanks all!

How about using the gear VR? i believe people have it working on elite and i think head-tracking also works with it (i'm not 100% sure so)

Nah, I wear glasses. VR isn't the easiest thing for me to use anyway.

You'll be completely satisfied with EDTracker. I've been using it for over a year and it offers a very precise tracking, to the point of being able to select the individual rocks scattered on the surface of the planet when you've shot the BIG rock to pieces. It's also unnafected by bright objects reflecting the sun from behind like other IR trackers I've tested. And you don't really need 6DOF in ED at all, so I think you've chosen well!

TrackIR.
I've had it for a few years and cannot play the game without it.

But dammit, Oculus have just lowered the price of the Rift....must resist....must.....resist.

I don`t want to sound rude, but stop being a cheapskate, just save a little and get Trackir5. It`s easy, straight forward and quite cheap. That Ed tracker will be a lot of faffing and frustration. TrackIr is the easiest to install and most easiest to get used to, efficent and in the long run cost-effective.

p.s. I just remembered Tobii Head Eye tracking. That`s even cheaper than trackir and needs even less setting up with stuff (no cap or head thing required), but I haven`t tried it and I heard it`s less efficient than TrackIR.

No it wont. You plug the USB cable in, you attach the device on top of your headset, calibrate it and voilà.

Furthermore, I've already watched a video or two. Looks perfectly reasonable for my needs.

Emphasis on my needs being mine.
