Old player returning! Any tips?

Hi everyone,

Last time I played Elite was just after Horizons was released. I was having a blast exploring planets but sadly real life (i.e: a job) stopped me playing, until now.

Can anyone offer me some tips/resources to help be better reintegrate myself back into the Elite mindset? Just browsing the forums, it seems there's lots I have to catch up on!

Yes: fly in solo. People will still be complete Richards and then half those on here will defend non-consensual PVP.

BW.

Do Not Go Into A RES Site Without Making Sure You Have No Cargo! (And that includes 'engineers' cargo from mission rewards).
Don't go out without shields.
Don't pick missions above your level.
When interdicted. If you don't want to fight. Submit. 4 Pips Sys, 2 Eng. High wake. Come back for another go.
Be prepared to run. Lots.
Avoid CGs and obvious player magnets (Sol, Shinrata, Jaques etc.) unless you want to be shot at.

If you play in Open, strap yourself with heat sinks.

If you don't, go on as usual.

Stay in SOLO or in a PRIVATE GROUP like Mobius, the pirates will blow your ship in seconds, and I mean it! Until you upgrade all your modules with engineers

whatever ship you are flying, sell it and get a slightly smaller one so that you have plenty of spare cash for the inevitable rebuys you will get in the next couple of weeks.

One advice. If you have some smaller ship (Cobra Mk. III is perfect) use it. Or if you do not have some smaller ship and you have credits, buy and outfit something like Cobra Mk. III (by outfitting I mean A-class everything) and do couple of hours of training. Bounty hunting around Nav beacon is perfect place for training.
You will see the difference and you will be able to adapt really fast. Couple of months ago, I returned to fresh 2.1 after more than 9 months pause and everything was OK. I never died, even before the NPCs was tamed a bit in 2.1.05.

OP, first thing that comes to my mind: get yourself liked with an old lady (Felicity Farseer) and upgrade your FSD. Will make all that comes later much easier.

So it seems that one of the important things is to learn idiot speak, so you can understand what they say when they kill your small ship in their engineered to the max craft. Because they really demonstrates their superiority by being pretty much invulnerable to you, while also abusing an ability that is a tad over powered, and then laugh about how they "rekt" you and showed you who the boss is.

Or just don't fly in open, in order to avoid the kiddies who need to validate their pointless lives by killing other players :)

Just don't, if you'd quit because you've been fed up with the game.
It's the same dull affair as before and you'd quit only again a week later at best.

What are your ranks? The new improved AI is much better but things to be aware of for the random non-mission interdictions etc are...

* NPC rank is directly tied to your combat rank, and can be raised a bit by your other ranks if they are higher.
* NPC ship type is directly tied to what you are flying at the time.
* NPC's rated Deadly or Elite may well be toting engineered weapons etc.
* Missiles are more effective so that useless 'point defence' module is much more in demand.
* Mines are very effective against NPCs if you are a trader and trying to run away from interdiction pirates.
* NPC's know what a chaff launcher and an SCB are for.
* ANY cargo, or bounties etc will greatly increase the chances of you being interdicted.

As suggested by others, I'd say you should fly a smaller ship that you can afford a rebuy or two on while you check out the new AI because dropping into a Haz-Res and owning it is not going to happen these days unless you are very skilled.

There have been several tweaks and balances, but I expect the only major addition for you will be the Engineers. These are well worth chasing as they can greatly enhance your ship. Note that accessing max level upgrades is no trivial task though.

Welcome back and Good luck Commander

Evening all...

I'm in the same boat/ship as the OP...been away since around the time Horizon was launched. I went straight in to Open just now and realised I'd either forgotten all the controls or they've changed somewhat (always been a 360 controller user). I barely made it back to the station, and I wasn't even being attacked..ha! I'll take the advice given by some here to downgrade my ship, but whats the deal with 'Engineers'?

...some depressing replies to this thread but I'm hoping for some fun times now I'm back.

I suggest reading the UA thread opening post if you dont know whats happening story wise also jaques station is a looooong way away. Gameplay wise shield cells heat up the ship, missiles and cannons are stronger.
