Newcomer / Intro old questions from a *new* player ( sorta late to the pilot party here ) ...

One question though: i also found some rock/mineral ( 'igneous' or something ) and i was able to successfully Cargo-scoop it up into my SRV , but then i can't seem to figure out where that rock/resource is now stored?

Those rocks, or "raw materials" are stored in the magical storage space that moves with you from ship to ship and SRV. Open the right panel, scroll across to Inventory, you will see a number of tabs down the side, those take you to the magical storage spaces that move with you and contain things like "raw materials," :manufactured materials," and "encoded materials" needed for engineering, as well as access to other functions like synthesis.

Yes indeed i was just finally able to complete my very 1st SRV exploratory & survey venture ON planet ! ( starting to get a better feel for driving SRV on terrain & atmosphere )

i made 3 Geological 'discoveries' too , from these VENTS in the ground. Was really cool & fun ...and so immersive!

One question though: i also found some rock/mineral ( 'igneous' or something ) and i was able to successfully Cargo-scoop it up into my SRV , but then i can't seem to figure out where that rock/resource is now stored?

Anything scooped up by the SRV is either a container or an escape pod which ends up in cargo storage and has to be transferred to the ship before you can board, or it is a material of some sort in which case it is stored in a limited magic pocket of holding and travels around with your commander.

....... for some reason i still couldn't see the Data-Link-Scanner bar going UP ( activating ) at all , no matter how close i got to the 'Silver Comet' installation.
....

So, in an effort to help, here is a quick video I just made showing me using the data link scanner to reveal the targets on an orbital installation, in this case a medical installation in a system I am operating in.

You should be able to see me target the Medical Installation marker, then I hold down the fire button for my data link scanner, the scan progresses (filling up the data link reticle) and on completion the installation "pulses" and the secondary targets appear. I target (select) a couple of power capacitors and then use the nav panel to target the hackable data transmitter. I don't attempt to access anything nor fire at any target (no weapons anyway LOL).

Note that there were satellites around the installation (they show all the time) but I didn't download anything from them this time.

I hope that it might be of some use.

oh darn then, because i never "transferred" anything and the game still allowed me to re-board my ship.

So now i'm wondering where that rock/material is and maybe i need to go back out into my SRV to check if it's still there? ( i'll also check my 'inventory' tab within my same docked ship as well )

i think i figured out the problem... For some odd reason , once i re-assigned that 'Data Link Scanner' button as # 2 ( secondary ) within that Fire-group , it WORKED !

No clue why having it assigned as "primary" #1 button wasn't working , since as i stated earlier i already got rid of that previous in-game Setting for "fire button = hardpoints out" keybind. -- But anyways, problem SOLVED and thanks soooo much for everyone's troubleshooting efforts. ( i know u guys were probably all just shaking your collective heads lol but i knew it would be something super obvious since yes i'm a newbie but certainly not THAT much of a newbie ;) )

Also , guess what?!?!?! While messing around in a 'station services' screen , i finally figured out how to turn-in all my various scanning & Cartogrophy rewards.....and.... was notified of THIS--->

My very 1st "discovery" ! 👨‍🚀

Although , i haven't been able to find my name within the Codex listing for that type & system yet. So maybe it wasn't an actual "first" ( game server wise ) but rather just a first for myself individually ?

Go to your "inventory tab" and it will say "ship cargo", on the left hand side of this page is 6 buttons, the third button down will show "materials" this is where any manufactured or raw materials are listed, the 4th button show encoded materials. these are the materials that are used for ship engineering,

Yes if you can board the ship with the SRV there is no cargo aboard it.

If it doesn’t show up in the materials storage as described by @K Olley then another possibility is that you hit it with a wheel of the SRV and broke it or flipped it out of range.

The Codex is a strange book.
If you are the first person in the history of the game to find an item in a sector of the galaxy you will be listed in all the copies of the Codex for that item as having reported it. Obviously this is a pretty rare occurrence.
If you find your first example of an item in a sector of the galaxy you will be listed in your copy of the Codex as having confirmed it, if you find a second example of the same thing in that sector it won’t get added.

All of which is separate from First Discoveries from Cartographics which you will get for being the first person to find and sell the data on a system or body every time even if it is the 10,000th one you have found. The problem is there isn’t an in game list of your discoveries.

for @Neestar:

1. If you have cargo in the SRV it transfers automatically to the ship when your SRV boards the ship. (If you have no free cargo space on the ship but cargo in the SRV then you can't board the ship until you abandon it.)

2. .... or you forgot to open the cargo scoop (been there, done that, read the book, ate the pie... etc). In Odyssey the material is yeeted away whereas in Legacy it just sits there accusingly, mocking you.

So long since I had cargo in my SRV that I forgot it was automatically transferred.

yeah i checked and i don't see any rocks/materials ( 'igneous' ) anywhere in my Inventory tab.

So, either i somehow missed cargo-picking up the rock on planet ( which i doubt because i saw it loaded in the onscreen panel screen rectangle reticle ) ...or.... it's still stuck within my SRV's cargo bay and i need to transfer it onto my ship. --- i'm gonna check SRV later tonite and report back.

hmm, so it would still be a "rare occurrence" even though supposedly the Community has only explored/discovered something like 0.07% of the entire GAME galaxy ??

darn bummer, cuz i was really looking forward to being "1st foot" at least once somewhere amidst the stars.... 💫
2. .... or you forgot to open the cargo scoop
Def. didn't forget to open the scooper , because see above ^^ and also because the little square BOX was highlighted/blue on lower right side of my ship panel indicator light.

However, i obviously only just started SRV experimenting & cargo-scooping , so i'm sure there's much more i need to learn....and notice.

Speaking of which, couple more questions please:

52. During my hyperjumps , i stumbled upon a PLAYER carrier ship out in Space and so i figured i'd go check it out and see if maybe it was selling some rare items or whatever. Well, as i approached and was about to land ( yes after getting clearance "approved" ) , i noticed the landing-pad assigned to me was VERY small and very tricky to reach. So i sorta went slow and had to sorta flank around to get a better angle-of-approach , but when i just barely slid backward ( i mean BARELY ) i got this onscreen red-warning telling me i had a "loitering violation" for 15 seconds i believe. -- Well, i managed to land , on my assigned landing pad , with at least 5 or 6 seconds left on red-counter timer and yet still the player carrier wouldn't allow me to repairs or any "ship services" due to this "loitering" violation. -- My question is: How do i pay such a fine? Do i have to contact that PLAYER themself directly? On other bases & such , i can just pay any fines ( PVE ) at the Contacts tab . But for this player carrier it wouldn't let me.
53. Last nite , during one of my jumps , i ended up jumping to a System that had what appeared to be a PURPLE mega-STAR ( although the info screen said it was a "white dwarf" star ) and it was massive and also had like these amazing purple/white streaks bursting to each side of the star for great distance. Anyways, for some reason this particular star caused my ship to "overheat" VERY very fast ( seemed like 1 or 2 seconds tbh ) . So fast i couldn't even speed up & turn away from it before the game automatically shutdown my ship. So then i waited for my frame-shift-drive to recover and tried to re-activate into supercruise mode ....but.... even though i was facing proper 'escape vector' my ship still ended up HEATING to like 135% on heat indicator ( crazy hot ) . Luckily i remembered to use my 'heat sink' and was able to get away finally. ---But my question is: Is this normal for this type of purple mega star? And if so, how the heck can i hyperjump into that System again without getting burned to a crisp?

Ok - 135% isn't crazy hot, that's barely warm. Not even hot enough to burn Thargoid goo off your hull. Your ship is tougher than you think :) .

But back to the question - yes. that's quite normal for a White Dwarf (WD) star. It's even worse of you get inside one of the jet cones. As to how to avoid being turned into a crisp - you can see that you're jumping into a WD (or Neutron Star) system from either your top right HUD (that shows the star class when you initiate the jump) or from the star's image on your screen during the jump (WDs and NSs have very distinct blue "wings" already visible during the jump). In this case, be prepared to turn fast once the jump is done. Don't hang around and try to get your bearings, just pitch up or down (for IIRC all ships, pitching is much faster than turning) hard until the star and its exclusion zone marker (yellow line around the star - if you have orbit lines on) are safely out of your way.
Anything else - like lining up for the next jump, or finding the body in that system you wanted to get to - can wait.

On the other hand, getting inside the jet cones and staying there for a little time will supercharge your FSD. For a Neutron Star, that'll quadruple your jump range, for a White Dwarf you'll get a 50% bonus. Given that a WD is much riskier to charge from, most people consider charging from a WD to be not worthwhile. NS supercharging, on the other hand (once you are in a NS rich part of the Galaxy - in the Bubble, there's only one, Jackson's Lighthouse) is pretty much a default mode if you want to get anywhere in a hurry.

Igneous rocks can't be loaded into cargo. But if shoot them, they will drop materials you can pick up (into the materials magic pocket).

Yes, that's normal.
When entering the system, throttle down immediately. (If you have a Supercruise Assist computer fitted, the "hyperspace dethrottle" option can set it to 0% automatically for you.) Then rotate away from the star and speed up to fly away from it.
The amount of heat your ship can take varies with ship type and and engineering choices.
Bring heatsinks.

Note that FSD supercharging can only be done if you have a fuel scoop fitted.

Awesome i never even knew about "supercharging" ! This game just keeps on impressing me the further i get into it. Anyways, thanks for the scoop ( pun intended ) and i will be sure to be better prepared ( turn wise ) whenever i spot another White-dwarf purple-winged superSTAR again yep.

ahhhhh ok there we go i bet that ^ is where my confusion happened. Although i remember shooting the rock ( once ) and i saw it sorta flip up into the air , but i don't think it actually "broke" into any pieces.

So maybe when i cargo-scooped it ---or thought i did--- it merely just ran over the rock without having properly broken it up first with more shots. I'll try again later in my SRV practice run.

If you are the first to find a system or even just a planet and sell the data before anyone else your name will be on all the maps for that discovery.

The Codex just has the first example of anything in a particular sector listed, for example the fictional Green Dwarf Star.
It will be listed in the Inner Orion Spur section of the Codex as reported by J Jonah Jameson if he was the first to see one in that sector.
When you find another one in that sector it will be added to your copy of the Codex that you have confirmed it. Your confirmation doesn’t have to be the first time any one else has seen that star it is just the first time you have seen one of them in that sector.
I said the Codex was strange.

If there isn’t or you aren’t given access to a Redemption office on that carrier you will need to find the nearest station you can land at and pay the fine there (do not use any buttons marked ”Hand Yourself In”) failing that you need to find an Interstellar Factors to pay it off.

If you are going to feel your way in to a pad it is better to do so heading straight ‘down’ to the middle of the pad and flipping over at the last minute.

White Dwarf, the exclusion zone is a long way from the bright bit so as said turn hard immediately then make sure you don’t fly into the jets as they will really ruin your day.

Meteorites and outcrops etc break into multiple pieces for scooping when shot, the various things stuck on geysers and fumaroles actually break off as a single large lump and go rolling off, unless of course they were attached to a geyser going full blast in which case they will probably end up in orbit.

The name changes from for example Piceous Cobble to the name of the scoopable material which will have to be targeted for the scoop to collect it.

Ok someone suggested dethrottling before entering the system, I never do this. Before jump it will tell you the star type, Neutron Star and White Dwarf have these large spinning energy sprays. I go in full throttle on, take a quick note of the direction of the sprays then immediately pull back full on joystick while angling between the sprays and get past safely every time, but it's about knowing what's there before entering the system basically and being ready with your maneuvering. If you wait until you enter the system before deciding what to do it's usually to late. The same method will also work with Black Holes, you just need to pull full back on joystick the moment you enter the system.

As for dropping out of SC, keep in mind while these stars are tiny the exclusion zone is the same size as a regular star because of the mass. So imagine you jump out at a regular star at full throttle, what do you do? Do the same here or the exclusion zone will bite you, and if you get caught in the spinning whirly thing when that happens you are going to die!

Now just wait until you jump into a station with noob hammers, that will bring a few questions I am sure!

Also, couple more questions for the thread:

54. Tonite a buddy in-game wanted to inspect my ship & modules & such , but when we tried using the 'Teleprojector' function it totally glitched for HIM and disconnected him after i send the "invite to Crew" and he got stuck in loading-screen and had to relog. However, when he invited ME into his Crew , my Teleprojector worked just fine and i warped into his ship totally fine. ( but of course the idea was for him, an EliteD vet of 10 years , to help inspect my ship parts & weapons ,etc. ) --- He said sometimes there is a "network port" problem with the game server . Is this true? Just a normal bug ? Seems odd that i could Teleproject into his ship perfectly , but he couldn't port to mine.
55. While out exploring & jumping & scanning in Space , i stumbled upon a BLUE-lettering target dot labled "Mission Trading Beacon" ...and.... when i approached it , the game sent me MAIL with some special "Resource collecting" mission, whereby i'm supposed to collect 9 units of WATER and bring it down to someone's base on a nearby planet in this System. -- However, i've been searching various bases & stations & settlements for like 4 hours now ( Trade Routes nearby ) and cannot find ANY Water being sold at any Commodoties Markets ( so far at least ) . Is there an easier & faster way to find Water? -- i don't have a Mining ship yet , so i can't goto 'Icy planetary rings' yet to just Mine the Water there. But what about going ON planet in my SRV ? Can i get Water that way?

54. About en par. Networking in ED is a nightmare - it sort of mostly works most of the time, so, given the subscription price, there is little to no incentive to touch it.

55. Water is usually being sold by Agricultural economies. If you want to use out-of-game resources (which in turn are using in-game resources to get the data), Inara can give you prices and locations of all commodities. Since the data is coming from CMDRs playing the game, those price lists will be neither complete nor necessarily up-to-date, depending on when a CMDR running one of the update tools actually last visited the system in question.

Mining water is only possible in icy rings, but you may be able to buy it from Agricultural or Extraction surface installations (while in your ship - I have no idea whether you even can engage the commodities screen when driving up to a settlement in your SRV with your ship being parked miles off/in orbit. Also, your SRV can only hold 4 tons of commodities).

Cue The Two Ronnies sketch set a hardware store.

Noob hammers = hammers to clobber new players flying too… where they shouldn’t some stations have two some have four others may have none.

It is probably something to do with the arcane rituals and sacrifices needed.

My usual reactions to such things are it’s a trap or a ruse to lure me away.

Water could conceivably be found in cargo containers on the surface using your SRV, but realistically you need to buy or mine it.

Yes black holes, you will see nothing when first jumping in to the system, so unless you already know it's a BH system by looking at the system details before jumping in it will just look like empty space......until that moment you realise you stuffed up because you didn't take immediate avoidance measures.

Noob Hammers, you will know when you see them, I don't know if the devs thought to themselves..."this will be fun, wait until the players find these"......but imagine a giant hammer the size of an asteroid smacking you ship and you will know why you died!

Noob Hammers are sometimes found on Coriolis stations (the cube type), there are 2 or 4 arms protruding from the sides and as the station rotates they are a hazard if you try to pass the sides too close when navigating to the entrance.

I have a feeling back in the day that Docking Computers liked to play chicken with Noob Hammers.
