Old-timers and millenials

I know a bunch of us are, how shall I put it? erm, old farts. So I was wondering are younger gamers at all jealous of those of us who have basically been gaming since the beginning? OR do they pity us for having had to put up with the simplistic pleasures of yesteryear? And before you all think I should have labelled this thread OT, I was thinking very much of those of us who have been flying since we were all called Jameson. I've loved sharing the journey with Braben et al. I'm seriously thrilled with ED, and there's so much on the Horizon(s), but I can't help but feel that ED means that little bit more to those of us who played the wire-frame original.
Thoughts?

Worlds apart isnt it though? The original game being very difficult to get anywhere without being blown up and starting from scratch. How technology has progressed from the commodore 64 days, win 98 etc.

I still think that some technology is being held back, im quite disappointed with the xbox1, its not as high res high performance as i thought it would be, it seems to struggle still.....

I now, played Elite 1984 and other games like Jet Set willy, Gunship, F18, pac man and many more good games, good old days

well i was around during the 80's (had a c64). i was always too thick though to get to grips with elite and then frontier elite 2 on amiga a500 +.

that's why i am so happy to finally be able to play and really enjoy an elite game (on my xbox one this time). it has been a hard road to get to grips with the game,but boy has it been worth it :) i am not kidding when i say that since the 6 or so weeks that i have had the game more than half that time has been spent playing elite dangerous (sometimes over 20+ hours at a time :O bloody awesome game :)

Played one of the old Elites as well, but, it didn't stuck with me..

A soon as i heard of Elite Dangerous on PC i was like: "ow! Yeah! that game was kinda cool". Was hoping it would come to console at some point, but gave up a year later.. couple of months later GPP was revealed and i jumped!

Raid on Bungling Bay on the C64 was a monster of a game a really hard but I loved it.
My fond memories of Elite were firing up my Electron sticking the cassette in and setting it to load.
I would then go out to my girlfriends(now wife)all the time trying to get home early to play.
Playing till 3 or 4 in the morning when I got home.
Still got the Electron.

I'm happy to be a older gamer, yes they may have youth but it will do them no good because 1. I'll be dead before the world gets too messed up and all mad max/ 2000 AD .2 I have a job which I'm hogging until I'm 68+ 3. I have my own house and a mortgage which the majority won't be able to get .4 I played on the old classics when they were new and exciting

I'm impressed. I used to always have to replace the previous machine rather having more than one. Then I met my second wife who was supportive enough that I've since gone back and bought all my previous consoles, computers, games. Well, 16-bit onwards at least. I'm not sure my life is that incomplete without Repton.
I feel like gaming's never been better, but I'm glad of having been playing for close to 40 years now. So many games, so many memories. ED specifically feels like it's beginning to deliver on the premise we all wanted to see realised way back when.
See, I was thinking "Am I sounding like the previous generation banging on about the 60s?". But it's more like I wonder if kids appreciate how good they have it these days. There's too much negativity in the younger gaming community. I'm not sure younger gamers have a reason to be so jaded. But maybe us oldies have perspective that they lack.

I remember playing Dark Forces years ago, which includes wandering around space ports and inside space craft. At one point you walk by a small fighter craft - I remember thinking "Ooooh! I wonder if you can get in and fly it..... nope". And now, in ED, you kind-of can. Get out of your craft, wander everywhere. Get back in, fly everywhere. Mind blown. We old farts get it. Kids don't. #GetOffOurLawn

I have every computer/console/handheld/cassette/disc/monitor/joystick etc. I ever owned.
Starting at Atari 2600 onwards.
My Mum and Dads loft is full of my collection.

I started out on Sonic the Hedgehog. Never did I imagine that one day I'd be tearing around a scale model galaxy! Elite Dangerous is my first Elite though, and its had as big an impact as my first Elder Scrolls game did. Cant get enough!

Been gaming since the early 80's. My older brother had the original Elite, and he'd let me sit and watch him.
The 80's were a fantastic generation for gaming. :)

I actually played Dark Forces in an internet café on a LAN back in '96 using A VR HEADSET. Oculus Rift it was not, but I so wanted one for MechWarrior 2 (some of my fave in-game music that). Oh, and related to MechWarrior-ish, anyone else excited to see a re-mastered version of '98 BattleZone?

Given how old I was back in 1984 I was probably throwing my toys out of the pram literally and wouldn't know what to do with an internet if I had one. :D
