One of the more interesting parts of the Odyssey mechanics are the salvage and settlement mechanics. I really like the sensation of walking around an abandoned settlement, and bringing it back to life. (not mention collecting a little extra salvage on the way!)
We have probably one of the best chances to make use of this mechanic, with a full-scale war and settlements being bombarded and wrecked. Giving these missions a solid impact on war progress makes sense. This is a method which is very open to newer players who lack good rescue, mass hauling, or AX combat ships. You can be quite effective at restoring settlements or collecting salvage with simple gear and a basic ship. This would not require much change, and would encourage more on-foot gameplay (which FDev wants to push)

- This could be made easier by selling spare power regulators on the rescue megaships. Given that SRVs usually have one, it shouldn't be that much more expensive than an SRV.
- Salvage missions could involve wrecked ships with valuable data or samples, along with stuff left behind in abandoned settlements.
- Restoration missions could incorporate purging caustic contamination or delivering a decontamination solution (a new consumable?)
- This could eventually lead into on-foot AX combat, restoration missions at old-style surface installations, or even docking with derelict outposts in space and doing missions there.
