On screen keyboard for VR (oculus/Vive) players

Having spoken to FD support, they agree that an on screen keyboard in the Galaxy Map would be really helpful to VR players. Xbox players apparently already have this facility.

Having to remove my Oculus HMD, find the PC keyboard, type the name of the star syatem I am trying to find, pressing return in the hope that the UI accepts the input and then replacing the HMD in order to reconnect with the Galaxy Map (which for VR players is already almost impossible to use) wrecks any notion of 'immersion'. Even Windows has on screen keyboard. Why not ED?

I'm a good touch typer but most of ED system names are weird and not so easy to type by instinct. So you have my vote. VR experience works best with controllers, they should associate it to console hardware.

agreed.
I haven't used VR in a while (sold my DK2). But I remember the gal map being the most frustrating part. Just selecting stars was clunky and awkward.

I know this thread is two years old, but did anything ever come of this? Lifting my headset to fumble at the keyboard when searching in the galaxy map really ruins the immersion.

Funnily enough had the same thought just recently, since I am looking to set my HTC Vive up, finally, with Elite. I did a decent job of using the keyboard when I first gave it a try, just to see what it was like and test the hardware, but recently I have been running exploration between some awkwardly named star systems and I don't look forward to trying to type those with the HMD still on.
