One big monitor v 2 monitors?

I agree. Though I'd also take a huge 1080p over a 3 monitor set-up. I have both. A huge screen sucks you in, and as it's so large your mind tends to disregard anything outside it (a bit like VR, though not quite as much). I still play the Xbox One on the big screen.

If you're going to go large, just go VR... No comparison. Not even in the same city, let alone ballpark.

One small monitor, in a box, on your face. Flat gaming, compared to VR is as excrement is compared to cream.

VR. :D

I'll get my coat...

Though on a more serious note, I played on a single huge screen (2.5m wide) for the first couple of years and enjoyed that. I could have played it on my multi-monitor setup, but I preferred the big screen (and the 7.1 sound, of course - that makes a huge difference too).

The Elite Dangerous Audio design is quite literally world class. FDEV's sound engineers are in a league of their own. Surround sound is a must IMO.

I'd like to echo this. Elite in VR is an experience unmatched by any monitor. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

Not only that, but sadly even over a year since release of the Oculus, ED is a VR experience unmatched by any game. It's one of the few games that was designed with VR in mind from day 1. Note that I say, "in mind." This is the key point here; it's not a VR novelty title designed for VR alone with catchy VR things to do. It's an actual game in and of itself that stands alone without VR... That, IMO makes it the best VR experience to date... (An example is Made For VR Star Trek Bridge Crew. It is nice, but gimmicky and loses its appeal after a few hours.)

Until you need to do 30 jumps in a row or need to search for mats on the internet or things on eddb.io.

30 jumps is easy as pie with the new routing computer and bookmarks.

I just lift my VR off when I need to do research, then my triple monitor EDDB / EDSM / INARA is in front of me. Then I lower it back over my eyes: not particularly hard. LOL
If I'm just typing a single system name or something, I can see enough down the bridge of my nose.... Note that an illuminated keyboard REALLY helps if you're playing in a darkened room.

Also, not everyone likes VR, whether it's usage cases or just doesn't get on with your eyesight.
I went 1 large 4K monitor and an iPad on my lap. Similar to how I fly my airplane, and the old cockpit view.

I had VR, it was good for many things, but, horrible where it mattered most to me.

OK. Going for a 32"/34" Ultrawide, with my current 26" for a second. Question is are the curved displays worth the price?

Edit - It is going to be powered by Surface Book at the mo. I'll be buying a desktop early next year.

Ultrawides are quite literally 4k monitors with the top and bottom cut off..

They are ultra narrows rebranded...

very, very clever marketing.

One could not stress this enough, playing this game on headphones is blasphemy.
There's so much going on in the lower end of the frequency spectrum, the famous honk shifts plenty of air with frequencies as low as 20Hz.
The way audio is done in this game makes me hope that more game devs take this as an example.

Organic sounding ships that have special characteristics separating them from other ships,
with minute detail that only shows up in certain situations,
aspX or cutter warble when reaching maximum orbital cruise speed in the blue zone as an example.

Sporting a 5.1 rig with a washing machine sized subwoofer myself it's a joy flying through the mail slot every time.
Anyone who doesn't own a decent 5.1 system but knows someone who does should take the PC over there and take some ships for a spin.

I was just about to buy the Samsung Ultrawide Monitor C34F791 when i relaised you can't put it on a moniter arm. :(

I'd even worked myself past the awful white back!

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

Edit - Turns out you can, but it failed the W.A.P. White is just so last century apparently.

Disclaimer : No Italians were offended in the creation of this post. Especially because the acronym has nothing to do with them and even it was the correct acronym, it isn't very offensive anyway.

This is starting to do my head in. It is hard to do research these days. All the review sites appear to be commercially orientated and all have conflicting recommendations. The comparisons show them as all the same or have the wrong information. I thought it would be simple because I am specifically going for a 32-35" ultra wide, curved screen but there are dozens.

Can anyone recommend an impartial, diligent review site?

Grr, every time i find a monitor that works technically I discover that it either can't be mounted or has silly flashy lights or colouring all over it. Don't they know that we need to get them by the Wife Approval Process? You lady gamers are lucky, I suspect husbands are much less aesthetically tuned.

Which is best for ED?

UPDATE : Thank you for your input. I going for a 32-35" ultra wide, curved screen (a 4k with bits added to the sides) maybe using my current for a 2nd. But there are dozens. Can anyone recommend an impartial, diligent review site?

Glad you're going the ultrawide route! I recently upgraded my ten year old monitor to an ultrawide and I couldn't be happier!

LG seems to make the best bang-for-your-buck ultrawide monitors. TechRadar has some reviews, Tom's Hardware has some reviews, but it's hard to find a comprehensive site since there are so many models of monitors out there.

I'd recommend you try it this way:

1) Find the size and resolution you want. Since you're going curved, pay attention to the radius. Smaller radius numbers mean a sharper curve. Sharper curves are better, because the general feedback is that too little of a curve is basically pointless.
2) Determine the refresh rate you want, and if G-Sync or FreeSync matter to you.
3) Shop monitors with those parameters.

Dell 34" or 38" curved is awesome for ED - 2nd monitor for browsing.

I have a 34" but do intend to get the 38" next. My 980Ti handles the 34 @ 3440X1440 plus a 1920X1200 24" alongside with no problems at all. Full resolution and all ED settings at max.

My next rig will use a 1080Ti driving a 38" Dell @ 3840X1600 and I'll likely get a 27" monitor with similar vertical dimension to use as the 2nd monitor.

These monitor are absolutely beautiful and calibrated properly before leaving the factory.

And then, there's always this...
