I've been using one handed keypads since the early 2000's. I use them in almost every game I play. Starting with the Belkin speed pad to the Razer Tartarus now.
As far as using mouse and keyboard over the hotas. Never going to happen for me. It's why I quit playing war thunder.

I use the razer orbweaver chroma and a 17 button mouse, before that I used the Xbox Elite pad, so the keypad made more sense than a keyboard coz I can control 4 dof with just my thumb on the keypad like I did with Xbox pad. The keypad is a good bit of kit.
However, before getting a keypad you could try stick and mouse, or throttle and mouse first, I've heard stick and mouse is good.
