What the Fudge - For real this time (Please don't change to "One Shot Destroys Shields" pls mods)
A while ago I made a thread about how I came back from Sag A* and got torn up by a bugged NPC eagle with grade 5 weapons and barely escaped with my ship, narrowly avoiding a 18 mil re-buy.
Then when I'd gotten back into the swing of things, I found that the combat had changed and I needed to adapt.
And I did, I got more used to it, and I started to enjoy my Corvette again. I also set about getting engineer mods, because my only gripes about the Corvette, are the jump-range, and the fact that 2 Smalls and 2 Med that can shoot reliably at a target means combat takes longer vs smaller ships. Also I love the class 4 multicannons.
Okay background out of the way, I'll get to the meat of the thread.
I've been doing Engineering upgrades for a while now. Been trading and bounty hunting, and I got FSD upgrades for my Type-9, Anaconda, and Corvette, and various other Engineering upgrades, you know having a dabble.
I haven't got them all yet, and some days I just cannot be to lug my 16 LY Corvette to the dweller to do some laser upgrades. I'm taking it easy.
Today I noticed that I never got Grade 5 on my 'Vette FSD. So I went off near leesti to get some stuff, then went to Deciat, as you do. I drop into space around Garay to get 2 extra Datamined wake exceptions.
See a few players. One anaconda running from a python, decide to investigate before I scan wakes.
Then an FDL drops in asking where to find Specialised legacy firmware, so I have a chat with that pilot for a few minutes.
Then I leave the masslock zone to start scanning some wakes.
Suddenly my point defence starts going crazy.
Blip rapidly approaches, and I hear drumming on my shields. I have A rated shields, and I see a contact zip from being fuzzy, to being red, then to being fuzzy again. A hollow triangle. I quickly open my contacts menu and scan for reds, but it's busy and I can't see red straight away, so I try and wheel around to see what this guy is, what he's doing etc. etc.
Silent running DBX/DBS. "Allright" I think, when I was active in Felicia Winters, PVP players would always run from me when we were blockading, or caught an underminer, so I thought, yeah, it's been a while since I did PVP, this should be interesting, let's see what the fuss is about with these silent running builds.
And I was having fun. I was flying and FA-off and dragging my Corvette all across space just to try and light this guy up. And I was having fun.
That was until "Shield Generator Disrupted".
"Okay" I thought "The fight just got very interesting.
And it quickly dawned on me, my shields weren't even attempting to recharge. So I drifted over near to the station so I could try and see what was going on with my systems, and on the way there he got my chaff. I couldn't re-activate my systems. So I thought I'd land, and see what I can do.
Checked the station homepage. This guy got my shield generator and my chaff. And I was on 92% hull, he'd scarpered on 58% hull after I managed to get some good shots onto him, so he wasn't sticking around because of station security and the fact that I'd gotten some good shots on him, but I didn't chase because he'd taken my shields out with 1 shot, and taken my chaff out for another. I didn't want to be sitting there on the re-buy screen because he could snipe my modules faster than I could kill him. It made me wonder if he was just testing his build, he wasn't going too ham like I'd expect a pirate/griefer to.
But that repair cost. Usual battle damage of that scale used to be a 100k repair, now it's like 60k.. This repair is 840k......................
For 2 shots.
I get there needs to be something to counter shield builds, and I don't particularly care that he was SR, I had good sensors and was relishing the challenge until the disruption.
However it's a bit excessive don't you think? A hastily aimed shot that just hits my shield and completely disables/destroys the module in one shot. The one module that large ships count on the most.
I'd be fine if it was targetted bleed, and took some skill, but one shot, no more shields at all. Not even a recharge, just no more shields.
I'm currently still sitting in station trying to come to terms with what just happened.
I'm not a robigo/sothis runner. I earned my money by trading/exploring/BHing and undermining for Winters. I don't have 800 mil to spend on my corvette, but it's no slouch either..
Just when I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that my large ship which used to be very capable was not as capable, and then coming to love it even more when I got used to it. It just tears me up inside because I thought I was going to have to shelve my favourite ship before and just have a 325 mil hangar ornament.
Now I'm thinking "If it's that easy with a lone 5mil DBS to completely shut down a pretty much A rated Corvette sans armour and A PP, I guess I might have to have a 435 mil hangar ornament".
I'm not saying remove this capability completely, I'm all for counters, and outfitting to kill certain things.
But 1 shot = no shields at all for a large ship that completely relies on shields and it's firepower.
I think that's just a bit too much of a kick in the teeth for those in larger ships to be perfectly honest.
I await people's input, and I understand that small ships need to have a place, but I hope you can see it from my side, how it's basically shutting out the larger ships from playing, and enforcing any sort of meta a bit too much.
