One word - impressive

TrackIR can actually do more than that, it has 6 degrees of freedom. You have yaw, pitch, roll, left and right, up and down and forwards and back.

Mike.. you know you guys want to support that, either that or mutiple monitors.. i.e. 3 screens. I can't be that tough to support it surely?

That would add a wow factor the would eclipse other games for a relatively small resource investment. Investment in such a thing would lend itself to the OC Rift (if that is a success).. If it isn't going to be there for initial release my bet is you guys should seriously consider it, as a after project. Support in for release, and OMG..

Personally, I reckon that trackir support is going to be a winner.

Crossed fingers!

I am a TraCK ir newbie... and ..... I LOVE IT

Only got a few games that support it... no good without a good controller though and my Warthog is kicking ass.. Microsoft Flight is just amazing..

Wasn't that star a symbol of Empire? :)

Peteris.

I'm not so sure Pecisk. The symbol of the Empire is an eagle. The eagle (aquila) featured heavily in Roman times, on standards, in art, and architecture. Not so for the star. I don't think this insignia has anything to do with the Empire. I do think the Empire has sold one of its cruisers to renegades, mercenaries, pirates, or worse!

That's not to say in 3300AD the Empire haven't adopted new symbols for new purposes. I could be totally wrong here. I do love the intrigue though. It's all very fascinating! :D

Penthux, I was actually thinking that it would be a break-away imperial warlord or rebel who has modelled himself on the ancient Roman empire and is out for conquest and glory. In the same way that Napoleon took Roman imagery such as the eagle on his standards.

Yes, but the eagle (aquila) is a symbol of ancient Rome whereas the star isn't, and neither is the raised/clenched/closed fist. ;)

lol beat you to it!

"Confederate States" perhaps? an off branch to one off the other factions? loving the intrigue to.

Video/music wise love it, watched countless times like others, but only just watched full screen earlier, so much more details, if its just a fraction we get from game-play i will be happy. :)

HAHA. Ok, well if this was a competition between us for who spotted it first, you got there before me! :D

I'm thinking along the lines of "Corsair Syndicate" or "Corporate Strikeforce". If the Imperial ship isn't controlled by pirates it seems to be using pirate tactics in order to subdue the Damocles. Plus the message "Hostiles heading for the landing bays. We need help here!" (approx. 01:07) reinforces my belief that the Imperial ship was not trying to destroy the Damocles but take control of it. I'm thinking the Empire wouldn't have many reservations about destroying a Federation ship. Also the fighters from the Imperial ship were not flying in any kind of formation, nor did they seem to conform to any kind of consolidated tactics (other than fire at will) which you would expect from a military force during any hostile encounter. The way those Imperial fighters are acting seems to suggest a free-for-all attitude rather than using any pre-planned strategy. This again suggests they have little, or no, military training. This is in complete contrast to the pilots of the Sidewinders, who accepted the Federation bonded combat assist request. They deployed themselves in formation. They fought with military precision, and were mostly certainly military trained personnel of some description.

I agree the music was very good, although a little loud for my liking. I'm more of an ambience listener than a 'Star Wars Rebel Alliance award ceremony' music fan. It was, however, a great example of what's achievable and can only get better with time. Great stuff!

<edit> I hope the cockpit in the game looks exactly like the one in the video. It seriously rocks! :D

Cheers, the R3 website is kind of a work in progress at the moment.

What are your thoughts about the capital ship battle video, Illu? And who do you think the following insignia belongs to?

y9du.png

This is the insignia displayed on the Imperial ship in the movie (see 57 secs in). A star over a clenched fist with the letters "C S". Hmmm... intriguing, to say the least. :D
If it was the other way around it could have been "SC" = Sirius Corporation. Though the fist doesn't really fit with capitalism, it's more of a communist/revolutionary symbol. Wasn't there some sort of communist dictatorship in the Frontier fiction?

The Captain of the Imperial Cruiser was obviously a complete moron with not even a basic grasp of how to effectively manage a vessel of such size, power and ability. He was also trying to show off before his antics completely backfired.
The CS obviously stands for Captain Schettino! :)

Outside of ED all good, inside ED it will always be a competition between us, and still good! but i will always be more right then you (RP) :p

Taking into account this Vid was to demonstrate the music as well as excellent graphics, and hopefully how some game-play will be, i agree the tactics of the Imperial fighters was wishy washy at best, no coherence in tactical combat which you would expect from any Military faction.

Agree to, seems like a capture the ship engagement was in progress rather then destroy, i suppose if they were Imperial a captured Federation ship would be a prize.
Either for propaganda purposes (unlikely if wanting to avoid all out conflict, supposedly they are in cold-war status) or maybe cature for Intel on any new Fed systems, or use for subterfuge ie start trouble elsewhere(maybe with the Alliance) under the guise of being Federation, but under control of the Imperium.
Again unlikely though, easier ways to stir trouble or learn of new systems i would think.

Only seems to confirm that its a rogue ship of some-sort, or a new Faction (would have thought a new faction have their own shipyards/designs however)

So again Pirate or corporation maybe......its fun thinking way to much! hehe

I loved the choral music! and it seems if i read rightly somewhere that music may fade in and out as you play(dramatic, non dramatic) depending on what you are doing, could be cool, although i intend to have my own music playing in the background at times if possible.

and yet again we agree together! (just not on! :p) loved the cockpit experience, all the details, the fluid movement, i hope to that its the same in-game :)

I would take the clenched fist in the context of the video to mean the ones displaying it want you to believe they are a malevolent institutional force, and one to be reckoned with.

Enaness, Liabeti, Alkaid and YZ Canis Minoris were all Independent systems under communist rule. YZ Canis Minoris was the only one requiring a permit to enter, as far as I can remember.

Giz a job Yosser!

Please do elaborate, Perseus. :D

In what way was the Imperial ship trying to show off?

<edit> "C S" could simply mean Charlie Sheen pledged so much towards E: D that Frontier gave him his own ship decal! :D

There's certainly arms dealers and we do want commercial events at locations in the games so you never know.

Michael

Are you suggesting that if a pilot turned up at the Imperial Shipyard with a(insert suitable sized ship) load of credits, they could fly away with a nice shiny battle cruiser?

In what way was the Imperial ship trying to show off?

The Federal ship was prone (for whatever reason) with no active weapons and bleating across the void for fighter assistance. The Captain of the Imperial cruiser had the Damocles by the balls and all he did was tickle them. It was probably a capture mission but the Imperial cruiser should still have disabled (with main armament)the powered down weapons of the Federal cruiser; especially because of the close proximity of the two vessels.
No need to hit engines or bridge if the moronic captain wanted the Damocles as a prize. Absolutely a need to permanently disable the combat ability though. Any damage could have been repaired or new weapons installed at a later date.
This didn't happen though. The Imperial cruiser allowed recruited fighter cover to make an appearance, allowed it's fighters to attack the Federal cruiser instead of dealing with the Sidewinders en mass in addition to firing at them itself and subsequently lost the battle of the small ships.
The Damocles then reactivated it's weapons and broadsided the port side of the Imperial ship (I wonder if one of the Imperial fighters had technology that was suppressing the capital ships systems?).
All because the captain of the Imperial ship thought he'd won and was probably posing for photos or trying to impress a cocktail waitress.
Either that or he was trying to capture a fully intact ship for some reason.
It was showing off! :p

Welcome to the ranks brother, you now begin true existence. :D

Are you suggesting it wouldn't be possible? Given the dubious integrity in which trade is carried out within the Empire? ;)

Thanks Perseus. That was a most thorough explanation.

Hey Psychocow glad to see you've invested in TrackIR!!! Did it have anything to do with my pitch on Retro-Lave???

I agree with you. I can't praise it highly enough. The ability to literally move your 'virtual' head around in any direction turns a good game into a totally immersive awesome experience. TrackIR was made for flight sims! Oswald Boelcke who is generally recognised as the first combat flying ace set out a list of 'Dicta' one was...

'You should always try to keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses'

I know this was in WW1 but the principle will always be the same for dogfighting, even in space. Trying to move a view with a POV on a joystick is simply turd compared to TrackIR

If you play any game that can utilize head tracking (flight sims, truck sims, otehr sims etc) you'll find it's totally worth every penny and it's hard to go back. The only downside is that once oculus rift support for games becomes more common and the consumer version is release trackIR will be made obsolete :p

That's one way of looking at it; the other way is the price for Track IR will drop through the floor. ;)

"Institutional force", that sounds like a gathering of mad doctors and nurses!

YZ Canis Minoris, does ring a weak bell, maybe I visited it. I remember the permits at least. One for the penal colony and for the religious fanatics.
Anyway, maybe it's a local uproar in a federal colony/sphere of interest and they got some military aid/weapons supply from the Empire. Of course via some dubious arms dealer, not to upset our Imperial friends.

No, I need a job! I have one but I want a better one, and no I'm not laying the old black stuff. :)

Any fool kno' that empire-built cruiser is not under the command of an Imperial Navy commander :p

Your right, its more likely under that psykokow and that Micky mouse outfit from the Thargoid Bar, they were probably taking it for a joy ride!

It's not so weird given the relative sophistication of the British viewing public. TV commercials have to be innovative because the general population reads TV very well. And it kind of is something to be proud of - just look at a Ridley Scott creation from years ago and you'll see how advertising is a pioneering form.

Well the reason I mentioned the Brit / US difference is because the USA are rather dominant in the high tech sector. If we were super awesome then Microsoft, Apple and Google would be British businesses *.

I originally raised the issue of advertising because Elite Dangerous doesn't seem to be receiving the same level of recognition as Star Citizen and I find that a bit troubling.

* - I'll add a caveat here because with recent revelations of NSA spying its not too far a stretch of the imagination that some of the success of American companies could, and is quite likely to be a result of corporate spying.
