Would love to play in open more frequently, but It wont happen until the rampant hacking is under control. Simply not going to risk my ship and credits.

Rampant hacking??? are you sure we're playing the same game? I've played open exclusively since months before release and never once ran into a hacker. Unless you mean combat logging, which I'd agree with, that is rampant.

I don't know why the solo/group players feel the need to come and troll the thread. We know the reasons why you play solo/group and they're perfectly valid.

I think the thread from op is designed to be for the players who might be on the fence about which group to try and not for this to turn in to an open vs solo debate. It should be possible to discuss the merits of one game mode without a bunch of people who we all already know are die hard solo/group jumping in to put people off.

Now you know why people complain in the solo vs open thread about the solo/group players jumping in to any open related thread and derailing it.

I think u missed that line: For all who play solo or private, come and try open too. You don't need to do so all the time but it is fun, even when you get your ship shot from under you.

I only ever backed the game for solo offline. Pleasantly surprised that, even though a number of horrendous compromised have had to be made along the way in the name of multiplayer, I've never been out of open since Gamma. :)

Eventually I'll switch to open, but not just yet. Not until I've got my fleet of ships for every purpose, kitted out best possible. My Tradeconda would actually be ready, but trading in Mobius is less often interrupted. Left open shortly after release, when an Asp CMDR blew me out of the sky without communication or reason. Don't remember what I was in, a Hauler maybe. No reason for solo though, Mobius is great. So I would invite all solo players to Mobius, space doesn't have to be lonely. Over 8000 CMDRs are actually so many that you really meet some.

I have to admit, I did go into solo mode during one of the CGs last week, I think it was last week, because of so many people in the combat zone it was a circus. Other than that I'm in open. Granted, I usually stay in the outer reaches of populated systems. I seldom see another CMDR.

I've hit solo a few times, only when I knew RL might interrupt the session at any moment - wouldn't want to have to bail on a CMDR.

Otherwise its all open all the time, - but I haven't shot anyone since premium beta...have a bad habit of flying around without weapons.

No you will know it when you see it, I'd list them all but don't want to give anyone any ideas. I like PvP no better way of testing/proving your piloting skills. I like the thought of escaping a pirate, or killing him/her if I'm in my combat ship. It's one thing to risk your ship and credits on fair play player combat which I wholeheartedly welcome, but it's a whole different ballgame vs a hacker and one I'm just not willing to take.

Staying in solo.
For the same reasons i don't use facebook, twitter, whatsapp or similar products.
1) I don't want to interact.
2) I'm no content.
3) I'm not interested in other people.

Open is, in fact, fun. And not so full of sociopaths as the forums might lead you to believe. In fact, I play in Open about half the time and have yet to meet one.

So why don't you play in Open all the time, you might ask? There are a number of reasons. Some nights my Internet connection is badly behaved... this is less of an issue in solo. Some nights I come home from a rough day at work and the last thing i want to deal with is other people. I mean, I don't want other players to ruin my day... but if I'm in a really bad mood I might not exactly be excellent to people myself. Solo is definitely better for that. And, of course I do my RES hunting in Solo to avoid spawn competition.

Beyond those things, though? I'm usually in Open. It's not for everyone, perhaps, but for those who haven't tried it, how can you be sure it's not for you?

If you have, and you don't enjoy it, that's fair enough. I do think everyone should at least give it a try, though.

Honestly I play all 3 modes. Probably 90% open as I find it just a more unscripted fun spontaneous environment. I play solo 8% of the time in cases of busy res. The other 2 percent is private group as connection demands but I still want player interaction.

As for giving open a try I'd say it's good for even the die hard old schoolers and ancient ones.. (I didn't bring up age first :)

Open is not some massive gank fest or cheaters wet dream. Its 99.9% people playing there game there way. 00.01% being nobs.
There are obvious hot spots sure but even then it's not how its perceived by some solo/group only players.
Those that give it a try might just be pleasantly supprised, those that don't, won't.
Maybe say I'll buy a cheap version of my ship and risk half mill cr or whatever you budget is to spend a couple of days in open. If it's not for you fine but just reading this you are the games community, don't believe the hype and give it a chance fellas.

Example: tonight I met a CMDR. I came into station said hello on the local Chanel and they said hey back. We chatted. We met up. We pvp'd for shields then went to Res for a bit before friending and going our seperate ways. Thais was in eravate the griefers and cheaters wet dream system.

by trade i pirate in open. This CMDR I met was on the side of the law, we could have blasted away because of pride or miss given sense of pride but instead for a couple of hours we shared the Galaxy.

See ee you out there CMDRS. And remember, if you comply and abandon the cargo I want, you will survive :)

My personal take on this, which I agree is <ahem> personal, is that the OP is looking at modes from the wrong end of the telescope.

Imagine for a moment that Solo was the default mode. Group existed for those rare nerds that had some friends and wanted an Elite LAN party. Open was the bit they tacked on the end for those who asked for pvp.

If you look at it from that perspective, then "Open can be fun, if you make a conscious choice to open (see what I did there) yourself up to playing a game where you are no longer the only person in control of your progress or enjoyment."

People enjoy different things. They might even enjoy a Deathmatch on GoldenEye64 with some mates. That doesn't mean they are any good at pvp. That self-awareness means they are unlikely to risk handing over control of their enjoyment to someone who is playing to a different agenda than them.

It doesn't have to get more complex than that.

Agreed. I've only played in open so far and haven't had a moment where I've felt like I've needed to switch to solo. But everyone will have there preferred game mode, or float in between like you mentioned.

The only griefing I've experienced so far, was when the dumbfire missile fiasco inside of stations was rampant. Just planned my quick escape and got out before getting fired on. Was pretty hairy undocking and immediately boosting for the exit, but IMO it added some extra fun into leaving an otherwise regular station. Same with players blocking an entrance to a station, I just practiced sneaking passed them stealthily instead. I enjoy the threat of hostile players, even if I know I can't escape or know I can't take them down, I'll at least make them work for it while boosting around behind them. Had a KOS Anaconda player end up letting me go because he got tired of me buzzing around behind him without a clear shot. Got out with 10% on my hull and he interdicted me again immediately after getting into SC, thought my ship was done for, but he just wanted to say thanks for at least putting up a fight and then he let me go. No words exchanged besides that. The guy just wanted a fun fight. Players pose a much higher and very different threat than AI, which is what I love.

To each their own, though. As long as you're having fun, then you should play whichever game mode you please.

I use private group for trade wings to grab the extra 5% trade bonus, I go solo in Res sites to bounty hunt and I go in Open for CZ action to take on other players (and generally get whupped). The game enables any person to play in the style they prefer.

What I find exciting is that this game is deserving of an award to recognise how it caters to the disabled, in that many add-ons are compatible (voice attack, track ir etc) and enable physically disabled players to experience the immersion experience.

You don't need a big budget to play this game. I use my business pc to play and it has the bog standard internal graphics that a few registry tweeks made the game playable and my trusty keyboard. I configured the keyboard to the old '84 keyboard layout specs and then added further key bindings, so that now, the entire qwerty keyboard is taken up with key bindings. I may not be as manoevrable as some with throttle, joystick, pedals etc, but I can still whizz around. It's ok for NPC but a lot more challenging against players.

So to summarise, I don't "do" open or solo or private group. I use them all, contingent on what I am doing in the game. All the (hundreds of pages of) posts about the merits of group, solo or open play miss the point to a degree and that is as a player, this game is versatile to cater to many different types of play and give the user a good experience. What I am urging is that for those who don't play open to give it a try and perhaps they will find a role, a niche where they may experience the "fun" that can be experienced in open play, while at the same time enjoying the "fun" from other types of play. Never say never, never say no, give it a try, give it a go.
