The solution for this is not a hack called solo and open, but proper systems security in core space.
In EVERY poll on the whole topic 2/3 of players have expressed a desire to keep it as it is. You may not like it and that's your choice but the majority of people do, FDev does, and Braben does. This isn't a "hack", it's a choice.
If traders want to trade in dangerous sectors, then yes, these mechanics need to be in-game! Traders should be able to hire protection and escorts. Doesn't matter what Braben said once in a video, it's logic. If you want to trade off the coast of Somalia, you better get some rifles.
As I said, the who galaxy is dangerous. The inside of stations is dangerous! PvPers have demanded the right to make it so. The only "not as dangerous" place is solo, and you don't want them playing there.
This isn't somalia, it's a game. Lots of people play it. Lots of people who have different skills and interests. They're allowed to be different to you - your playstyle is not "right", it's just yours.
And dead game as a result. In life you want to avoid conflict, in games you force conflict. Safe trading without risk is playing chess against yourself.
Your opinion is it's dead. All the people in solo think it's fine. If you don't like it, noone's making you play it. Just because you're an uber-killing machine and need other uber-killing machines to feel entertained, doesn't mean the rest of us are or do.
Feared pirates add the need for protection (players playing police and bodyguards), crime adds the need for law enforcement (bounty hunters), all this protection needs to be paid by the traders. The pirates in turn feed by the traders. Classical sheep/shepard/wolf dynamic. Take any of these factors out, and the sheep are free to reign and the game becomes an utter bore.
You forgot that there's no protection for traders right now other than solo. PvPers are everywhere - even inside stations. But you don't want them to play in solo.
I am not a pirate myself, but it's obvious how a completely peaceful universe would kill the game. EVERY SPACE GAME HAS PIRATES OR HOSTILE ALIENS. Why is it such a deal for some that in this ONLINE GAME some of these hostile forces are human players? I don't even consider this "PVP", it's more like PVE with human antagonists - because unlike MMOs with dedicated dungeons etc. the whole environment in a space trade game MUST be dangerous because the loot gaining (credits) happens throughout the open universe also. With no genuine danger in the environment there would be no need for better ships and better lasers (and no need to bound in wings either). Seriously, why do you need to upgrade when you have no obstacle to overcome?
Why is it so hard for you to grasp that some of us DO find the NPC's to be challenging? Why can you not understand that for some of us the challenge is simply docking in a station without blowing up? Why can't you grasp that some of us ENJOY the space trucking experience? It's not JUST about the gankfest, and there MUST be room for all play styles.
I understand that some people don't want combat at all, but for this the solution is working and efficient policing in core sectors and not the mode-kludge.
OK, but it's not there is it? And even when they've got those systems in place there will STILL be those who want to play solo.. simply because THEY WANT TO PLAY SOLO and don't like playing with others. Stop demanding everyone play YOUR game YOUR way.
Want it safe? Space truck in safe sectors with safe profits.
And which sectors would they be, right now, today?
Want it dangerous and high profits? Move to the frontier.
So Lave is a frontier area now? Luxury Trader spawn points full of goon swarms are frontier areas? You're expecting the least offensive players to play victim, before or without doing anything about the most offensive ones first. (I use the term "offensive" in the meaning of "those commiting offenses", NOT the meaning of "distasteful").
If Ed had working police and working pirates this whole topic wouldn't exist in the first place.
Well it doesn't, does it? Which makes your tirade rather pointless.
