General Open Letter to Fdev – Suggestion for a New Paid DLC Release

Dear Frontier Developments Team,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is John, and I am an avid player of EDO. I want to start by expressing my deep appreciation for the hard work you've poured into the development of this incredible game. The immersion, attention to detail, and freedom it offers are truly astonishing, and in my view, it stands as one of the most authentic space simulation experiences available.

I wish to share a suggestion with you that I believe could benefit both the player community and Frontier Developments. While "Elite Dangerous" is already vast and rich in content, there's always room to expand and enhance. One effective way to do this would be to release a new paid DLC introducing new features and functions to the game.

Additionally, I'd like to outline a few specific ideas that, in my opinion, would further enrich the "Elite Dangerous" experience:

  1. Planetary Construction and Development: The ability to construct bases, industries, or spaceports on planets would be a monumental step towards gameplay customization and expansion. This would enable players to have a direct impact on the game world and introduce a new layer of depth to space exploration and colonization.
  2. NPC Crew with Specific Roles: Introducing NPCs that can be recruited as crew members for our ships would be a stellar addition. These characters could possess various skills and roles, ranging from engineers and weapon specialists to negotiators and diplomats, adding fresh dynamics and strategies to missions and combat scenarios.
  3. Pilot Cockpit Customization: Being able to alter the colors and styles of our pilot cockpit without resorting to mods would be a welcome feature. The cockpit, after all, is the space we most frequently gaze upon during our adventures, and personalizing it would truly enhance the immersion.
  4. New Ships, Weapons, and Equipment Modules: It's always thrilling to have new tools and assets at our disposal. Adding new ships, weapons, and equipment modules would diversify tactical options and breathe new life into the game for both veterans and newcomers.
In closing this thought, I wish to emphasize that, as a dedicated "Elite Dangerous" player and customer, I would gladly pay $50 for a DLC that incorporates these enrichments into the game universe.

Not only would this provide an opportunity for fresh and renewed gameplay, but it would also serve as an additional revenue stream that could be reinvested into the ongoing development and creation of more high-quality content.

In conclusion, I want to thank you once again for your dedication and effort in making "Elite Dangerous" a unique experience. I eagerly look forward to seeing where the future of the game will take us and will continue to support your initiatives with excitement.

Warm regards and wishing you much success in all your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Endealon.

I quite like the idea of a paid-for DLC if it contained content that would be worthwhile buying. There is a ton of stuff - including those items you list - that could be done.

However, given the games' age and current development resources, I doubt it would happen. Unfortunately.

Having said that if they were sure a DLC would ensure player uptake and new player enticement, then developers could, hypothetically, be brought in.

While I'm not necessarily opposed to more DLC - I think most of the things mentioned by OP could probably be done in a free update.
If I was going to pay real money - I'd expect alot more than that.
Even the Planetary Construction and Development - I think a better strategy would be to make it a free update, then sell good quality cosmetics and customization options.
I could be wrong - I suppose it depends on how much resources FDev would be willing to throw at it.

It would be quite nifty if you could find an uninhabited and unexplored system where you could first disco and first footfall the whole shebang.

Then load up the new carrier module that contains materials and construction equipment to start building planet bases and star ports.

Somewhere deep in the black that other CMDRs could stop at en route to somewhere else then stock up and sell stuff.

You mean like the DSSA?

Being serious for a moment, yes, I would like to see add-ons and more content, and totally fine with it being a paid DLC. As a matter of fact, I am 100% with the OP's feelings.

But I am not here for that.

I hadn't seen an Open Letter in ages, so I rushed to read it as soon as I could, and the positive tone of it was so disappointing.

Where have all the good old open letters gone?

This game is truly dying.

It would give those of us with our unused billions of credits something to spend them on: Bases and the modules to equip them, staff them and defend them. Even if it was done ont a squadron level it wouyld be a nice addition to the game. Might inspire more people to get out into the black.

Genuine question: what do you think new ships could do that current ships can't, without unbalancing the game? Do you just mean new shapes of hull? Because we can already modify hull shapes with ship kits. There is also a huge variety of other cosmetics. Modules can be engineered or arranged in millions of permutations. So I'm not sure what "new ships" actually means? Every time we make a unique ship configuration it is "new".

So, basically, fleet carriers that don't move?

I would also pay for a new DLC, but with ship interiors, the options you are giving are relatively easy because they are already in the game in a certain way... for example, the NPCs in cabins already exist, the interface colors are already modifiable with third-party programs, and the creation of bases or space stations are also there, all that is missing is an application from us for permission to name already existing random bases on planets of your choice.

Genuine question: what do you think new ships could do that current ships can't, without unbalancing the game?
Read OP's item #1.

Current ships are not designed for transporting large items. Everything must fit in the cargo hatch and stored in a racking system.
The creation of space ports wold require differnt types of ships than what ED currently offers cmdrs. The need to transport and build stuff.
  • Building materials, prefabbed sections, etc.
  • Construction equipment.
  • Ship building & maintenance equipment.
  • Manufacturing & processing equipment.
  • Ship components.

Other types of activities introduced to the game could also create the need for additional types of ships.
  • Salvage
  • Rescue & Recovery
  • Surface mining
  • Large item transport missions.

... and thats less than 10 min of thinking while I type.
