Open letter to Frontier

That's fine. But renting access to their server does not mean yielding control over my pc or connection. These are still mine to control.

So my question remains. Why is Combat Logging something Frontier Development needs to get involved in, while infiltrating a PvE group for the sole intent of PvP in order to provoke a response is not?

From Zac's official response:

The bolded part is also true for Combat Logging. So if that's the criteria, both should be handled equally.

Mind you: I have never and will never Combat Log and find the procedure highly gamey. Which I detest when I'm playing a game.

Dammint Ziggy! I can't give you rep that often. I keep trying and trying...

Pulled over? By police interdiction or by psycho murderers?

Either way, isn't that just a useless annoyance that should be eliminated? Especially if you're being hassled for cargo you don't have.

The police thing sort of serves a purpose, in that they might pull over anyone who isn't at least friendly for scans. Although, they can get everything they need to know from you in sc, barring cargo scans

I get pulled quite often by NPCs wanting to kill me, heck at founders I expect it happen now - I class it as a good sign if I make it to the station without having to flee in my unarmed Taxi from that Dropship that has taken a fancy to me. Was funny the day I bought my Anaconda, it pulled me on the way in and on the way out (was going to the Nav to test the drain on my weapons cap).... I've never felt so smug killing an NPC before :D

Sounds like a general waste of time.

No, but it does mean that they get to set the rules - whether you like them, or not.

If they want to class Combat Logging as "cheating" / "exploiting" - they can.
If they want to class "seal clubbing" as "griefing" - they can.

Or they can allow those things. It really is their game and they can set the rules and change the rules at will.
When you click "Play" to access the game, you agree to their rules and their decisions. If disagree with those rules then your only option is not to click "Play".

Which is why I now spend more time in Warframe and only tend to login to ED now to do a few charity missions, then logout again.

It is, but FD make the NPCs and FD want random nut jobs who attack for no reason.
They'd rather it be the players, but they do have NPCs that do it was well.

actually i must admit, i do hope this is fixed for 2.1. assuming the ai are going to be much better and not let us just boost away to escape every time (great i welcome that) I do think it is important that the same ai are bright enough to scan for cargo before demanding it and opening fire, as well as not keep asking for more even though they only have room for what you have dropped..

currently being interdicted by a psychotic AI in a shieldless sidewinder is a mild annoyance, but as some of the "griefers" have pointed out, if the AI keep the same mentality as they are now but make them tough to escape, there will be a lot of angst. I am hoping both issues are fixed at the same time.

Yea, FD can also make a game where every second there's a 0.02% chance your ship will spontaneously explode. But that'd be dumb.

Also, FD wants players to have the OPTION to be a random nut job if they want. They also want to add consequence to make it harder to just be a random nut job. They've also taken steps to make npc's less insane in their actions, so clearly it's not what they want. And that's because they understand what's fun and what's not about death and consequence. You don't, I guess.

Problem is, the rule they laid out means that neither Combat Logging, nor PvP griefing on a PvE group is an actionable offense. While only one is still treated that way.

That analogy only works on subscription games. If you buy a "season" of ED you have the right to play that season on their server forever without further payment.

I'm not having a go but you are wrong. All software is just licensed access. You never own the software. The license has conditions which can be altered at anytime without reservation. Meaning at any point the ability for you to use the software can be revoked. As soon as you accept the EULA you are tied to these contractual conditions.

Same with almost every bit of commercial software.

That is certainly the way software developers like to paint it. Courts have certainly taken a different view, on numerous occasions...

Could you link one where the software - costing millions of dollars to develop - has been classed as purchased by a consumer for a normal retail price thus giving them full ownership of all the code/assets developed for it.

Sorry for being a little OT...

You don't, I guess.

Besides the back handed insult there, "fun" is a subjective term. What is "fun" for one may not be "fun" for another - this thread being proof of that.
Some people do not want to be mollycoddled or covered up in bubble wrap and protected, and DBOBE made it quite clear in the Dev diaries and interviews that this game will not do that.

So if you don't find conflict (even the odd random NPC nutter) "fun" - then you're in the wrong place.

I've been part of the Solo/Open/Groups debate since the game came out, I've collected information and built the "Wall of Information" in my Sig - I've spent 12 months with others asking for an Open PvE mode - as I don't find random PvP "fun" but would like the play the "MMO" I bought as an "MMO" not a single player online game. But it isn't going to happen. Not as long as FD defend harassment and griefing by saying "no rules were broken".

There was even a YT video of DBOBE getting killed by players for no other reason than him being in Open mode, he even stated in an interview that when he plays under his official David Braben login, players hunt him down and kill him just because it is him..... he was laughing about it, so he clearly has no objections to griefing / harassment by anyone, even being the victim of it makes him smirk and he found it "fun".

Also, making NPCs "less insane" shows they do want them to be random nutters... as they could stop them outright but choose not to stop them.
In fact SJA made them harder a few months back and has said time and time again, she can make the NPCs as hard / nuts as she likes... all we have to do is ask.

And if you think the Mobius invasion was bad, just wait until Code / Goon (whatever they call themselves here) / SDC and the likes all start asking for mental hard NPCs to be added.
Because then they don't even have to put the effort in to ruin your day, they'll get FD to do it for them by over tweaking the NPCs.

So, sorry pal - but NPCs do attack randomly and FD could have stopped that at any point - but they just keep tweaking how often it happens and how hard the NPCs are.
Your definition of "fun" or mine has nothing to do with it - the Devs enjoy random attacks so we all have to suffer them.

Actually, the rules they laid out is;

combat logging is bad,
griefing is fine.

You may not agree with the rules morally (I doubt many would) - but by clicking "Play" on the launcher, you in practice agree to those rules - and as long as people keep clicking "Play" and as long as people spend money, as far as FD know everyone is happy with those rules.

@jockey, games are designed to invoke or play on the feelings of a player. This design isn't a mistake. Players might miss or dislike the reaction, and that's the subjective part.

And again, the rules as you defined them are the rules programmed into the game. Combat logging is programmed in, but it's wrong for some reason apparently. This is logically inconsistent with how griefing is handled.

I don't really need to address anything else you said, since you either wholly missed the point or put out your bad kid "people just want an easy game" rhetoric.

I actually quoted the rule laid out.
However, "griefing" in itself isn't against the rules. There is no evidence that I can see that suggests that the players in question altered the game in any way in order to gain an unfair advantage. In addition, groups are made in a way that allow players to join together and play in a way they want. However, it is the admins of those groups that manage which Commanders have access to the group and which do not.
I take issue with the motivation. I do not agree with the motivation logically. Because logically it would follow that Combat Logging is not against the rules.

No no, combat logging is not programmed in the Game. combat logging is killing the client, what is programmed in is leaving the game with the 15 second timer which is okay and not combat logging. you can do that all day and FD is fine with it.

The connection ends when the program ends, regardless of how it's ended - I'm afraid it's programmed that way. :/

Thats not programmed in, programms can be ended, computers turned off and internet connections can be cut, theres nothing FD can do about these things.

I was responding to your assertion that software vendors can arbitrarily change the conditions under which software is licensed. They can't. Contract law applies to software in the same manner as any other goods or services, and one party to a contract does not have any legal right to arbitrarily amend it without the agreement of the other.

Maybe they should keep this in mind when they design game mechanics, instead of saying "better not do that or else!" That'd be like if the back of the station wasn't rendered and crashed your game, and they said "don't go back there!"
