Didn't we just get off this ride?

Let's actually examine what "Open only" would mean.

It would mean no Solo and no PGs. Ok, but what does that mean practically speaking? It would mean that everything which is currently done in Solo or in a PG for the sake of safety (ie. the probability of unsolicited PvP being 0 or close to 0) would have to be done in Open.

So, Shinrarta, Deciat and every other "hub" system would have to be entered and navigated with the understanding that potential conflict is unavoidable. And conflict would be unavoidable. Travel would be more taxing. Exploration would have new risks. Engineering ships would be an uphill struggle. New players would all be baptized in fire.

Would this spur the creation of real "player police" forces? Would pairing it with an aggressive C&P system make it better than what we have now? Would Elite become unplayable for a significant portion of its player base who are only here for the Solo or PG experience?

All great questions. No one will agree on anything. 60+ pages in, @Iron Golem will regret his decision to make this thread and request that it be closed. Call me clairvoyant.

It would also mean that console players without premium platform access would not be able to play at all - as they can only play in Solo.

It's an interesting thought experiment - however the likelihood of implementation is vanishingly small, in my opinion - given Frontier's repeated stance on the BGS, etc..

.... and some players play in Solo and Private Groups simply because they don't find PvP to be "fun" - in a game where PvP is entirely optional (and affecting the mode shared galaxy state is not).

Then there's the fact that the existence of Solo was used in mitigation when Frontier cancelled Offline mode (and the furore that that initiated) - which is another reason why I suspect that Solo will never be removed.

This is how I try to play in the past six months despite all modes existing. One exception, I recently went to HIP 36601 as part of an exploration trip journey. A squad mate got his SRV's blown up while doing this a few days before. So I ducked into solo for my visit to that system. Not wanting my trip ruined at the outset.

But I like locking myself to open, I like having to think about survival in out fitting regardless of the build and to make tough decisions and sacrifices so I can't run the optimum ideal loadout for everything. It adds spice to the game for me. Much needed tension and edge after years of single player.

I am meeting people and learning from Cmdr's with vast knowledge I never would have met otherwise. I have made friends and helped people who were newer than me, and have had many memorable experiences both good and bad.

The truth is if it wasn't for open I wouldn't be playing anymore. Solo got very stale for me and in this vast sandbox open and eventually pvp became my end game.

As awkward as it can be for power play and pvp the way Frontier did it is pretty fantastic to appease a huge subset of different types of players. Perfect for most, no... But a little something for all of us.

The mode switiching does undermine the purity of some aspects of the game for me, power play and pvp. But ultimately for my gripes I'm very happy for what we do have.
