Open play and single player mix

couldn't I just log out and go play in solo mode for an hour to avoid dying?

You could also log out, go do any number of things, then log back in an hour or a day later to avoid combat with a specific stalker.
For some reason some people are really bothered about what other people do when they log out of online, especially if it's playing in solo mode.
I have realised there is more than one other player in the game and figure I would rather engage in mutually enjoyable activities than 'upset' someone else by forcing them to engage with me.
...
Isn't human nature wonderful!

Here's another question relating to this. Apologies if it's already been answered elsewhere, and feel free to just link to the answer.

What would happen if I play solo, dock at an outpost that has 3 landing pads, then log into online play, but all landing pads are in use? Surely I wouldn't be able to "spawn" into the world because there's nowhere for my ship to go?
There are multiple instances of each area. I have heard that only 16 players can be in one instance at any one time. So although all the data is on one server, there are many many multiple copies of each small area to compensate for the player numbers..
i hope eventually more players can be in one instance at once. I know from my experience it was difficult to get 4 friends together in one combat zone, even all choosing the same group or all choosing 'open' , its like there is hundreds of servers and you can't choose which one you go on. Also, during combat many times me and my friends would see each other vanish, so you can also be 'switched' mid game whilst piloting. I hope this has been cleaned up by now, having not had the time to play at high levels since the last wipes..

Do you log out instantly on the other player's screen when you choose to log out or close the game? If so, isn't that a bit of an exploit? If I ever got attacked by another player, couldn't I just log out and go play in solo mode for an hour to avoid dying?

You can only log out after being 'safe' for 15 seconds. You cannot log out while being attacked.

Thanks, that's really useful information. On the one hand, it's really disappointing that it's not one massive seamless universe and on the other hand, it's impressive that I was completely unaware of the multiple instances until you pointed it out.

A case in point about not upsetting other players: I bought a drive interdictor and decided to use it on a player, to see how hard it would be in case I needed to do it. I had no intention of shooting, and neither of us had criminal records.

He submitted to the interdiction, turned around and blew the living hell out of my ship instantly, which would have netted him a nice criminal record, but it did go to show that it's a dangerous universe after all!

This topic was discussed previously. From what I noticed players who play exclusively open are against this mess and players who play only solo are all for this mechanic. I guess they want to screw up open as much as possible.

I expect that some of the players in open will be more than capable of doing that for themselves....

You don't get it, You can still separate open and solo and still use same server all there is to do is you have to create two characters.
