Open Play experience just blows…

One would think that after months of Open being mostly devoid of players the dev team would listen intently to those of us who want to play in Open. Instead they just let the Open languish. A game like Elite should have a significant segment of the player population in Open around the clock, like it used to. It doesn’t because the ones who can do somethng about it don’t seem to care about Open.

Looks at Inara ...

To Shinny D - go go go!

I always play in Open

unless there are instancing issues
Too many different versions of the game can’t instance and instancing problems persist even when players are using same version. It’s as though the game was designed to insure players rarely meet unless they get together in PG. Hair should be on fire about this but instead we get continued focus on elements which mainly serve Solo/PG players. Tell us you don’t care about Open without telling us you don’t care about Open is the way a lot of us see this. It’s fine though. You’re done with us and we’re in ever increasing numbers done with you.

The Open pop is split in Open Horizons and Open Odyssey
Soon we will have Open Horizons 3.8 Open Horizons 4.0 and Open Odyssey

Also... ED is not really built for big crowds - so people will always be dispersed in lots of instances

I've recently come to the realization that the best days in Open are in the past. An empty (as in, I don't see anyone) Open doesn't entice me to log in. We used to have some decent CGs long ago that would encourage CMDRs to congregate and wing up, but these days CGs (when we have them) cater only to truckers and AX combat pilots. And there were lots of expeditions open to everyone and weekend "Let's travel to Hutton together" events, all of which have since fallen to the wayside.

And for me these days, without an active Open, Elite is just meh.

There is little to no reward for being in Open, only risk.

My buddy and I just came back to Elite after a few months away, now that we have some story content. He popped into Open to see how it was after being gone and in his words:

“I got popped right away and the message from my ganker was “HAHA ship go BOOM”

He’s back in private/solo mode.

If FDev and others want more people in open, then there needs to be an overhaul regarding system security and response time. I’ve stated it elsewhere and so won’t reiterate it in detail here, but EVE always struck me as having a good setup - system security levels actually mean something. It might be something FDev wants to copy after a fashion.

Open, PC, Odyssey CMDR here. Let me see...

Over the last couple of weeks I've -

1) significantly interacted with CMDRs in HIP 22460 and surrounding systems pre and post Proteus wave.
2) interacted cooperatively with CMDRs engaged in operation Wych Hunt in the relevent systems ejecting Asimuth
3) Collected and loaded mugs and gin in open with CMDRs needing both re the 2HOT2MESSY. Both at Hutton Orbital itself and other systems by arrangement.

1 & 2 were organic. 3 was by design.

Tell me again of open being dead because every time I go looking I can't help but fall over other players 🤣

Got a dedicated (static or dynamic) IPv4 address? No? Then of course others can't connect to you. Also make sure that if you do have one, that UPnP is working correctly or manually forward the port that is set in the networking settings.

CGNAT and Dual Stack Lite are a hindrance in instancing. Normally, this is solved by the game developer deploying TURN servers to bridge those connections VPN-like. But FDev only does this for wings and multi-crew or when an established instance needs it because the last directly reachable peer left the instance. AWS server instances are costly. Arx sales alone doesn't cover that for use of those liberally and willy-nilly. Dedicated servers even are much more expensive than TURN for peer-to-peer. Simply offload the responsibility of instancing to the player.

A few years ago flying into a CG you would be met with various wings and lone wolf CMDRs in supercruise. The sensor would look like a snow globe full of CMDRs. Fly into any CG now and you will be met with one or two randos and maybe one or two of the same players you always see. It’s just mostly vacant.

Technical issues are only part of it. I have a huge friends list of mostly PvPers. I can see who is on. Most haven’t logged in in weeks or months or longer. It’s just sad.

Indeed,

The 4 v 1 ganking went a long way toward killing Open

Ironically, I don't see much of it going on these days, but then again, I usually do my own thing and seldom run to the hot spot currently in vogue.

I don't run from a fair fight, but I don't look for them either.

I play in open.
I occasionally see other players in open.
I see them more if I go somewhere like an engineer base.
I see people on my friends list, also in open, some of them in busy systems.
The distance marker tells me they're over 100ly away.
What I infer from this is that open isn't abandoned, it's just that most of the traffic in open is happening in different places to where I am.

Developer = lack of game design to encourage playing in Open
Community = few have chosen play styles that have alienated (pun intended) the need of the majority of the community to play in Open

Having said above, 10+ CMDRs together killing aliens@HIP 22460 was great fun in a while! :)

Something, something Powerplay :D

Instead we have easy NPCs in day to day travel rendered even more useless with engineering.

I'm 99%+ Open. The only times I go Private Group is when I really need to be left alone, in order to accomplish something specific.

There are reasons for the current state of Open. In my opinion, it's largely driven by two factors: gankers (who drive players away from Open) and server stovepipes (which impact instancing). Again, that's my $0.02. Your mileage may vary.

They should have gone full MMO like eve, or full single player like X4. This split approach to solo/online has capped what is possible. Now we get the worst of both worlds. Not enough curated content as we would have gotten in a singleplayer game, and a pretty bad multiplayer experience overall. This was a big debate during beta, they tried to please everyone and this is what we have.

Yup...a mess. A game that has fantastic potential, and from an mmo perspective, is hamstrung by prior commitment.
Open only sandbox with a server/subs is the future.
Solo alongside with less Impact on bgs pp cgs etc. Might work hehe...
Old arguments with fellas on both sides passionate about change or retaining the status quo.
Change is coming. Or the game faces oblivion.
You want solo go out in the black hehehehehe... I know I'm out here! In open..weird.
Look it's just a matter of perspective. Not everyone wants pvp nor cgs with other cmdrs about. So how they placate everyone is the bind.
