Open source Elite

This is a question for David Braben and the suits.

Would Frontier cooperate in an open source, fan based, Elite to build and play the game our way?

It would have to benefit Frontier, though. Giving away IP makes no sense. So, within the open source version on Elite, there should be a way for Frontier to sell customization, like they do now with Elite: Dangerous, and other paraphernalia.

What do you guys think? Would you play an open source game that has the blessing and cooperation from Frontier so we have the game the way we want it? Would you contribute in the design and development? Would you buy customization and paraphernalia from the Frontier store so that Frontier can benefit for loaning out their IP?

Build it our way or your way (and everyone else's way). Can see it now, huge weapons on an Eagle, an Anaconda with the agility of a Sidewinder, asteroids made up entirely of high grade/valuable material.

Yeah, that would work well .... lol

The community is so divided on so many topics that I don't think this would be a very good idea. We'd end up arguing even more than now ;)

If you had the talent and manpower to build an open source space trading/exploration/combat game on the level of ED, it would be far more practical to just make up your own name for it.

Although just from a technical point of view, neither MMOs nor microtransactions are really compatible with open source.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
What would an open-source, 'fan-based' version accomplish? What is the goal?

If it's to re-imagine core gameplay I think it would make more sense to simply take the core idea of Elite (space-based combat/trade/explore) and develop a new game IP based on it. No need to obtain permission and mess with IP rights that way.

If the goal is to play around with official Lore, then that's a whole can of worms that isn't worth it imho. :) Elite Dangerous and its story *is* the vision of David and Frontier. I doubt they'd be interested in giving up the rights to any fan project, but of course I do not speak for them.

I figure that alot of this game is server side. Open source is one thing, but the backend equipment is entirely another.
I work in that industry and i can tell you.... its not cheap. Maybe rent the kit from a DC, but still costly.

You confuse 'I' with 'we'. There is no Elite game 'we' all want, nor will there ever be. I dont get why you need the IP anyway, just make another space game. Unless you mean make ED open-source, which wont happen obviously.

Don't be silly. That's a gross exaggeration.

I disagree. There is always a compromise.

Well, how would you suggest FD make money on their IP? Frontier is integral to this open source success.

Frontier goes part and parcel with Elite. There is no Elite without Frontier or DB.

"I" want to see Elite, not another space game. If "you" don't agree, that's your opinion. But don't, yourself confuse "you" with "we."

I'm not being silly, do you really think everyone would 'play nice' and within your rules? If players were allowed to create content, they would create it to suit themselves first and foremost. And the first thing they would do, if they had the ability, is to build the ultimate ship.

Apart from the fact the FD are company that has to make money, pay employees, show a profit etc., etc.

This:

I don't think you understand how a business makes money, or how Open Source works.

How about turning asteroids in mega-battleships?
