Open source Elite

oh so you are saying that it's impossible to be a developer and a player at the same time? well that sure explains allot [noob]

A sure sign when someone doesn't have an valid answer - a personal attack!

Yes, what this game needs it a couple of thousand 'developers' all trying to modify the game to their specific paradigm - yep that would work well wouldn't it!

no you miss read me i think. I made no personal attack or anything directed towards you at all.

I thought that it had already been stated that after FD finishes development that it would be released for private hosting. ???

Not sure if the nightmare of managing an open source project would be worthwhile for FD but I am keen on them licensing out Cobra ;)

This is a question for David Braben and the suits.

Would Frontier cooperate in an open source, fan based, Elite to build and play the game our way?

very unlikely scenario but i've heard rumors that frontier would be willing to opensource the game at the end of its life. would be interesting if anyone could confirm or even provide a link.

there would be two big problems with that. first, the sheer technical challenge of absorbing a huge codebase ridden with inhouse tools and libraries. second, by then much of the technology would be long obsolete. but opensource community has shown several times it can and does handle these problems. it really boils down to how many nostalgic fans the game still has by then.

if you do not plan to live that long, there is another option: reverse engineer the server and run your own private flavour. you might run into some legal issues, but it has been done with several big mmos ...

Build it our way or your way (and everyone else's way). Can see it now, huge weapons on an Eagle, an Anaconda with the agility of a Sidewinder, asteroids made up entirely of high grade/valuable material.

Yeah, that would work well .... lol

you are obviously not aware of what opensource communities are about. nobody would go into that gigantic hassle just to have an idiotic experience. it would be a communal and agreed upon process, by a very involved fanbase, free of all the market pressure.

I don't think you know how open source works. It's not a free-for-all. lol

Since I seem to know nothing, educate me. How does this open source system work? Who in the community has the final say (notwithstanding FD of course) on what is added, what is deleted and what is modified in the game? Is there a monthly get together to decide whose idea is better? What happens if the community is polled and half want option 'a' and half want option 'x'?

It would have to benefit Frontier, though. Giving away IP makes no sense. So, within the open source version on Elite, there should be a way for Frontier to sell customization, like they do now with Elite: Dangerous, and other paraphernalia.

What do you guys think? Would you play an open source game that has the blessing and cooperation from Frontier so we have the game the way we want it? Would you contribute in the design and development? Would you buy customization and paraphernalia from the Frontier store so that Frontier can benefit for loaning out their IP?

Contact the guy who's making Evochron - I'm sure he could use some help adding content.

As for Open source Elite? won't happen. ever. ED might become abandonware eventually but by then things will have moved on and other better spacesims will be around. ED and SC have at least been responsible for a great revival of the genre after a long slump and things like X-Rebirth abominations.

If the farce that was the DDF and how they ignored most of the ideas from that (and these were paying customers) - what real chance do you think an open source project would have which brings zero income to FDev?

There is precisely zero possibility of Frontier releasing anything containing Cobra Engine source code while they are still selling games which use it. It is a commercial concern, with a fiduciary duty to its shareholders, not a charity...

Well actuly it is a free for all, do not like a direction, fork the project. If it cannot be forked it is not open source.

Open Source Elite as referred to in OP is a single player game, I would argue pretty much done in OOlite.
Open Source Elite Dangerous, well the IP will need to die, at the moment it has value, so FD are naturally exploiting it. There may come a time where licensing technology and IP is the best way to extract value, but hard to see why that is now.

This so so funny.

An open source Elite so we can make it how we want it.

So the Devs say, "Yeah sure, we understand that the thousands of hours we've put into the game is not what anyone wanted, so go ahead and make your own version, so people will stop playing ours"

Good luck with that!

To be fair though, I used to play a modded version of freelancer called colours Elite. It was awesome, had new ships and missions and game areas.
Really enjoyed it.

So there is scope for this kind of thing, but not until the current game is dead I think.

Also, isn't there already a free to play version of FEII out there, all it needs is a graphics update and it probably has some aspects that are better than ED.

Edit: found it

It would be easier just to make a new game from scratch. The only stuff worth having from ED are the assets and perhaps some of their rendering tech.

I would love to look at the source code, if for no other reason than to contribute bug fixes and optimization patches back to Frontier, as many of us who play the game are or were software developers ourselves.

BUT.... It's not going to happen. Sorry!

Looking at this: https://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/pricing/

Since ED is using dynamodb for the data backed an open project would either have to a) reverse engineer and rewrite everything to use a different DB implementation or b) fork out a LOT of cash just to keep one version of the galaxy db online. People need to understand that ED is not just a bunch of source code you can build, refactor and fork as you like. There's a LOT of backend system you would also require.

Wait, you want FD to foot the bill for the infrastructure for an open-source project that competes directly with their own product? That sounds a bit crazy.

Serves me right for not checking every single reply,I missed that gem. Yeah sure, that makes.. no sense at all.

Nope, not that

Well, I think Oolite is probably the best you can honestly expect from an Open Source and Free Elite game.
It's and amazing piece of work and really good.
An Open Source Elite Dangerous is something I can't see even in the more distant future
(never say never though, who knows what will be in - say - 30 years time... ;) )
