Opinions on new Passenger ships

Liners_copy.jpg

I like the new ship/class design, except they don't really look like ships that can be modified very easily.

I think one of the best parts about Elite and Frontier Elite 2 is that you can modify and customize any ship you buy, regardless of what class the ship is (trader, fighter, etc). And the ship designs seemed to support this - they looked like empty shells you could load up with different kinds of equipment.

These new ships look hermetically sealed with "no user serviceable parts inside".

Firstly, welcome to the forum Fire Head Fred. As for the passenger ships, remember that their primary role is transport/pleasure cruises. For this role they look ideally suited, but I wouldn't recommend taking one purposefully into a hot combat zone. This specialization in their designs in itself, would limit it's multi-role capabilities. I suppose (and I am guessing here) it could make a go at being lightly armed cargo transporter for relatively safe systems too, although that would seem to me to be a waste of it's true purpose.

I agree Michael, very sleek. I can imagine loads of passengers standing at the windows looking out as you come into the spaceport.
Y'know I never considered the option to take folk out on cruises in the game. Looking at those ships though, I might consider it.

Actually the passenger ships are pretty tasty :)

Michael

I think Michael could be hinting that they could be a bit tasty in terms of other use/combat, potentially due to speed/smuggling/capacity for upgrades, etc... Is there something in this?

love it how a new poster just arrives and start complaining:D

and welcome to the forums Fire Head Fred

Everyone is entitled to an opinion regardless of how long they have been on this forum or who they are or what they have done (or not done)

And I took Michael's "tasty" comment to mean more than aesthetic design.

I was thinking Michael was talking about combat suitability and smuggling possibilities. I was getting that these could be the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing, ideal for luring in pirates before blasting them to bits because you have converted all the passenger space for use for weapons and shields! Also for smuggling who is going to suspect the ship carrying VIP's or want to bother them?? Anyway I like to let my imagination run wild...:p

As for the design, sleek and shiny and reminds me of a luxury speedboat type thing.

Ok that was kind of complainy for a first post, I'll admit.

I do remember that was one of the fun parts (for me) when playing Frontier - I liked the fact you could buy a ship but weren't restricted in what kind of career you could pursue. You could even change "careers" without buying a new ship. You would just re-equip your current ship with different gear.

Either way, its probably a minor point, was just wondering what other people's thoughts were on this.

Thanks.

I think that maybe these ships are upgradable, but on the inside. Upgrading the decor, installing a new bar or hiring better entertainment would attract a more high class clientele.

I think there'll be a bit more specialisation this time round, though still flexibility within that. Fortunately, you can own multiple ships now, so the idea is that we'll get deeper and richer gameplay for each profession.

And pretty much everyone has had a moan on here, so don't worry about that. Mobius is virtually moaner-in-chief, lamenting each piece of merchandise as it comes out.

I like the New ships and they supposed made in an imperial shipyard so aesthetic is more important than main function of the ship, just take a look on all the private yacht's around the Mediterraneans that has all the bling effects to dazzle anybody.

They have large surface of plexiglas for the view. Perhaps ailerons are retractable? Perhaps when there are planetary landings, they will be able to be amphibious, to go under the ocean ? As Michael said, they are tasty and certainly we reserve some surprises

They look fast. I know this will depend on engine size and other factors but they look like they are designed to rip.
Well done FD, the ships are shaping up!

I think there'll be plenty of room inside for hidden panels, smuggled cargo, even some slave dens under the floor. The executive guests sip on their champagne pouches whilst narcotics and weapons are stuffed in every cubby hole around them, all dressed up in a luxuriant façade.

Oooh Shiny. They look really gorgeous. I hadn't really considered passenger transport until now. However with some of the other comments highlighting the potential, Im giving it some serious thought;):D

I imagine the interiors are reconfigurable from anywhere between the no-knee-room packed-like-sardines budget flight, all the way up to the sort of interior only a multi-millionaire would be able to afford with top level furnishings, entertainment and telecommunications. Zero-G so the cocktail bar would be interesting... You could mix the drinks carefully in a ball hovering in mid-air.
