Option to auto-disable headlook when docked at stations

I like to use a headtracking (EDTracker) while playing Elite Dangerous, but when I am docked the (normally useful) exaggerated head movement makes it very hard to use the menus. This is because menus are text which I need to read carefully, but minor head movements cause it to move too fast for me to comfortably follow.

So either I keep my head very still (very annoying & tiring), or I use a hotkey to disable headtracking when I dock (which is what I do). But it's annoying to have to disable headtracking every time, and frequently I forget to enable it when I undock, such that when I need headtracking I suddenly find it isn't working (and before realising I need to enable it - which is quite a distraction in the heat of battle).

So I would like a simple option which automatically disables headtracking while docked. You might better describe it as "Enable headtracking when not docked", in which case you could change the existing headtracking option from a simple On/Off box to a choice box with the options "Off/On/On when not docked".

This seems silly to me. I feel like this is not very different than asking the ship computer to automatically power on, use, then power off a shield cell bank every time your health hits 50%.

I don't feel like it's appropriate to ask the game to make up for your forgetfulness. I am in a similar situation as you. I went out to combat, realized I can't turn my head, and suffered for it. I made an effort to learn from those experiences. Now I associate turning headlook back on with bringing landing gear up. This seems like the appropriate solution to the problem.

It's a single hotkey, a button press or vocal commoand to switch on/off your flavour of head tracking - it really doesn't need an automatic option that would have to cater for the different types of tracker.
Waste of development resources.

I really wonder why people feel the need to moan about suggestions that other people make. It's up to *Frontier* to decide if the suggestion is a good idea or not. Maybe one of their programmers has a spare moment, and remembers the "minor" suggestion, and has time to implement it?

I'm merely reporting something which really annoys me since I first used headtracking, and continues to annoy me to this day. If you don't think any of the 100s of "minor" suggestions posted on this forum are useful, then it's easy: Don't comment, unless you have something *constructive* to say (like how the suggestion could be improved).

I see lots of daft suggestions, but trust Frontier to make rational decisions.

You might as well argue that there is no need for the Galaxy Map to remember any of your settings (when you close it or the game), and that it's silly to complain about something you can re-enter with "just a few clicks". Yet Frontier thought it was worth doing, and I agree with them.

If you think its up to Frontier send them a ticket then privately and not make a thread about it on a public forum

Yup, totally. I'm using a TrackIR and have a toggle-button-thingo on my X-55 throttle. One flip re-centres the TrackIR, and a flip the other way disables TrackIR. Takes nothing to set up a hot-key, plus it give me complete control over it.

I think a few more hot-key options would be cool. Particularly, a third "fire" button ... but stuff works as it should pretty much now, so ... meh.

Weather or not you agree with the suggestion, your comparison isn't very good...

Deciding when to use the shield cell bank is part of the game.

Turning on and off head tracking is an interaction that takes you out of the game; it decreases immersion. "I forgot to turn on a computer peripheral" should not be a reason for losing a fight.

All that being said, I don't really care what is done with any head tracking since I don't use it and probably won't until the production Oculus Rift comes out.
