Option to make de-select multiple items work like Planet Coaster?

I've logged more than 1,000 hrs in Planet Coaster but haven't put nearly as many into Planet Zoo because of a small change that happened to the building/scenery group edit controls. In Planet Coaster, when editing a building or scenery group, holding CTRL + dragging a box will deselect anything inside that box that was previously selected. In Planet Zoo, holding CTRL + dragging a box will deselect anything in the box but also it will add anything in the box that was previously unselected to the selection. Basically, it switches the selected/unselected state of anything that's inside the box. From what I can tell, this behavior was just totally removed as an option in the controls options, and I can't really figure out why, or how to work around it.

I know this is probably a very niche issue, but it really breaks my workflow and has been my largest hurdle to spending as much time in Planet Zoo as I have in Planet Coaster. Is there a way that this option/key control could ever be re-added as a QOL patch? I know it's probably easier said than done, but part of me really hopes this was just something that somebody forgot to copy when the engine was brought over for Planet Zoo.

Hey, I know Im late to the thread, but its a pity that there is no response. I have the EXACT SAME problem here too. I have similar hours on planet coaster, and the planet zoo building edit mode is bogus.
It basically does not have a 'deselect' button option, it its a pain to individually multi select dozens of objects.

Yeah I select like 50+ items manually and individually because its in between all the other objects that I should not select. Then I accidentally select something that I don't want. Its a total pain to start over this over again. In planet coaster all I had to do is multiselect like 100 pieces then multi-deselect the ones that I didn't need.

No it doesn’t.
Even if you alter the controls,
You cant multi-select with drag shift-click then multi-deselect with drag control-click. You gotta sacrifice one control over the other.

Video proof:
SHIFT (or CTRL, works too)+left mouse click = select
CTRL+left mouse click on selected item = deselect

works in both edit mode (group) or when you mutiselect with I (then deselect with ctrl+left mouse click).

But you mention dragging (yes, because ctrl works as both select and deselect) but it doesn't mean you have to start all over again.
So deselect is there. Only not by dragging.

(I was replaying to that that it's called "deselect pieces" in planet coaster, not "deselect multiple pieces")
Also ctrl+mouse drag will deselect pieces but as you say, if there are other pieces in the way, it will select them instead. So yes, I agree this must be fixed.

Thats my point…. you cant multi deselect by highlighting. (Unless you change controls, which reverts the situation and you cant multi select).
And if you are working on simple environments then this mode is ok, but if you are trying to edit a matrix of very complex interconnected and overlapping objects then deselecting one by one is a huge pain.

We're two years into the game now though and people have grown accustomed to it working the way it does and integrated it in their building flows. Changing it now is just going to cause more frustration among people who never played PC to begin with.

So I don't see this as something that needs to be fixed. Adding another option perhaps, but changing how it works now is just going to mess with people who've grown comfortable with the building system as it is.

Have you seen what I've built in Tharmachati and Koali? 😅 I make complex structures every day buddy, no need to immediately make that kind of conclusions just because someone disagrees with you :p

I find it useful. It allows me to invert selections I made, which is super useful. If I want everything but a certain thing selected, I select that one thing first, and then use CTRL drag to select everything else. It might be a different system than you're used to, but it has its advantages in complex building too ;)

Sorry about it, but I havent been really watching too much planet zoo content. I tend to watch it when I get into it. But looking through your suggestions, it seems like its a multi-person project so Im not sure which one is you.

If im guessing right that you are the sole author of Tharmachati, I think the nature of the constructions are more organic whilst the structural ones (canopy) have a lot of spacing.

I could highlight something in one angle then move the camera in a different angle and highlight-deselect the unwanted bits. With planet zoo, thats impossible.

For example, if I give you my thing in planet coaster, would you give me guidance on how I can only select the head of the Buddah without selecting the architectural brackets behind it? In planet coaster I could just highlight the head in the front, then rotate the camera and multi-deselect the architecture behind. In Planet zoo this is impossible, especially because the overlapping pieces are not selectable due to it being embedded very deep inside a different piece both in the buddah statue and the architectural brackets.

They should fix select (so only shift+click/drag selects object - now shift and ctrl both work the same). If they do that, deselect should work correctly.
But as now I am used to not multideselecting. I deselect piece by piece.
