OR DK2 - Awful or I'm doing something very wrong.

Hello.

So I've just got my OR DK2, and I have to say I'm extremely disappointed - to the extent I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong. I've read the threads where people are knocking the OR, I assure you I'm not one of those - I want to be one of you that loves it!

I'm using extended mode, have set up IFD, set to 75Hz, and am running an an extremely beefy PC (specs at end). I get very bad chromatic aberration, a lot of blockiness, and basically it looks like I'm playing ED through a sieve. Being able to look around the cockpit etc. is fantastic, but most text is totally unreadable unless it's right in the sweet spot in the centre of view, and even then all letters have the chromatic aberration around them.

I really want to love the OR, but at present, it's just awful. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Specs:

i7-4960X, Asus RIVE, 32GB RAM, Samsung 840 Pro, 2x 780 Ti SLI, Dell UP3214Q

Apparently it has to be fine tuned to your "biometrics" then "fiddled" with for many hours, isn't CV1 allegedly out this year ? Perhaps waiting might have been the best policy, although I am sure a lot of users will jump in and give you a multitude of various time consuming things to try and make it better, hopefully one of them will hit the nail on the head for you and get it to an acceptable level, nice specs, have you tried it with one card ? not sure if SLI is even fully supported by ED yet ?
I have seen mention of supersampling making text a bit nicer also changing the hud to green, something to do with 2x as many green pixels on the rift screen.

I'm happy to spend time fiddling with it - I'm aware it isn't a consumer product. I had big issues with the Windows driver, which I managed to finally sort out. More that now I'm a little out of ideas what to try; people can't be raving about what I'm seeing surely?

Here are various things you can try:

Measure your IPD with the Oculus utility and add that value to the config file (Im not hugely convinced this does anything useful though).

Adjust the eye relief on each side of the Rift to a comfortable setting.

Adjust the position of the Rift on your face until you have it in that sweet spot - get used to positioning it like that every time.

Try changing the HUD colour to green - the Rift green pixels are much denser than Red or Blue, so you get much more legible text.

(instructions on all these things can be found here in this forum).

I've tried all these, and the most effective for me have been changing the HUD colour to green, and the simple step of making sure the Rift is in the right position on my face.

Unfortunately, you might find that your IPD (the distance between your pupils) is outside the usable range for the Rift in it's current form.

What about resolution is it set to 1920x1080?

Is the Oculus Quality slider in the settings set to maximum?

Another question; I use extended mode (due to issues with the driver), but I have the OR set to Landscape (flipped) so that the desktop looks correct in the OR... could this be the issue?

I'm afraid to say that you won't get anywhere near a sharp experience like a monitor would provide - your eyes are so close to the pixels on the display that you can see them. This is the 'screen door' effect that you probably heard about - Oranges and Reds are the worst colours due to the pixel organisation and density.

There are ways to improve the experience:
- Green text like rennarda suggested is a BIG help, but this compromises the galaxy map filter keys. It also looks a bit naff in my opinion
- Try leaning all the way back in your chair and recentering the Rift with F12. When you resume your natural seating position, you'll be further forward in your ship making the text MUCH easier to read.
- Try supersampling - I use a resolution of 1440p which makes the text a little clearer.

In my experience, the IPD value does absolutely nothing for fixing the image quality in Elite.

As far as I know, the CV1 reduces the screen door effect completely, indicating that the display has been improved. Whether we will have the power to take advantage of that @75 fps is a different matter though!

Mine is set to Portrait

Agree completely here. Any screen flipping or rotation messes it all up (and massively impacts performance as well). I had this initial problem on my laptop when I first got the Rift.

Can I ask you to first mess with some Oculus Rift Demos - get them working first and right in extended mode?

Then focus on the OR with ED. If you do it that way, you are building from a firm base...

Just some thoughts:

1) do you normally wear glasses? Maybe your eyes are focusing on the screen rather than the view?
2) Have you tried the OR config Utility and the Demo scene. I would concentrate on that getting setup correctly before trying it with ED
3) As part of the Config util there a tool to set the IPD..that may help.
4) The vision will never be as good as a monitor, however the immersive/experience makes up for that IMHO.
5) The text in the DK2 will always be a little blurry..you can change the text to green (lots of threads on this), however I prefer to just to lean in and get a closer look.

I hope it works for you.

Shouldn't be, I have a 760 GTX myself, have flipped the desktop so that it is the right way around when running extended mode, and it works ok.

You are going to get some chromatic aberration (the thickness of those lenses basically ensures it) but it should only be obvious around the periphery, the chromatic aberration adjustment that the DK2 uses is not 100% perfect and becomes more obvious the further you go from the centre of vision. I'd recommend running the Oculus Config tool, set up a profile for yourself and then click on Advanced and then Measure next to the IPD setting. Follow the instructions and it should calculate your IPD for you (it does each eye independantly). As I understand it, once you've properly measured your IPD using the tool, as long as you also tick "allow custom rendering for this profile" or whatever the option is, any program that uses the current OR render library should take the profile values and use those rather than need it changing in the specific settings file.

My IPD is 59.1 and I can't quite get both lenses in the perfect sweet spot (the hardware is set for 63mm and the DK2 lenses only give you about 3mm play either way I think), but I only really notice aberration when looking at the periphery, stuff in the centre of vision usually looks fine.

So you update the firmware on the Rift.. but you DON'T update the NVidia driver. I got a message saying that the new drivers are ready but I haven't updated on the advice of this forum.

My computer isn't exactly the worlds greatest. I don't SLI, mainly because after I dropped in a new GTX980 there isn't space for another. Going back to non-VR gaming looks a little flat to me now. I guess the fact that I prefer to play in VR suggests my experience of it must be okay.

Here's a few hints and tips that will hopefully help you enjoy your new kit..

- I don't use a 1440K resolution anymore. I changed the "Manage 3D Settings" for edlaunch.exe. I set the "AntiAliasing - Transparency to 2x(supersample)

- I switch off the main monitor. Every clock cycle saved is one for the DK2

- To save more clock cycles I switched off shadows and bloom.

- I lean back as far as I can in my chair and reset my origin. This makes all the text closer when sitting normally.

- I didn't realise my eyeballs were so far apart. People must think I look like a hammerhead shark. When squishing and shoving the goggles around your face, close one eye then the other to make sure the goggle's position is optimal both left and right as well as up and down.

- Continually wiping the lenses is considered bad because it causes scratches. I wipe my lenses at every opportunity.

- I haven't changed my HUD to green. I increased the gamma and the HUD brightness to make the stuff stand out more.

- If space is a murky brown washed out colour it means I've got to restart the service to fix it.

There you go. Some of the stuff above might actually work. Some of it might just be some sort of placebo that convinces me that the picture is better

I agree with everything you have said there Frank.
Quite interested in what you're doing with the AA transparency though. Do you rate that over DSR supersampling ....or is it the same thing?

You've got a lot of help here directly, but I had the EXACT same reaction you did. I was used to a high end 27" gaming monitor and suddenly I got a screen door and visible pixels, what was this 1997?

But......

By day 1.5 I was hooked. After a week I tried playing on my old monitor while I set up new controls and it was...awful. Your eyes/brain will adjust to the screen door, I don't even see it anymore unless I try to. I went from "rift meh" to "rift YAY!".

Do the tweeks, work out super sampling, double check your IPD, change the hud color, and then just play a bit. I'd recommend dog fighting, thats where it really sold itself to me.

I found it difficult to muck around with my resolution when I used the DK2 as my only monitor.

I am not sure if it's as effective as DSR supersampling but I'm a firm believer in blindly pulling levers until something nice happens. It was the first lever I had in hand and when I pulled it, it gave a pleasing result.

The only problem about this empirical way of doing things is that I feel a little scared about changing any values. I got it good enough for me. I even feel that I don't need to change the HUD to green. I'm sure that the option to change colours will come soon enough.

I'll give it a go! ;-)

Im pretty sure its the idp wich isnt set correctly.
also theres a small program to set your text etc to green floating around this forum.
make sure you use that, makes all the difference.
