Newcomer / Intro Orange Half moon above systems in Galaxy map?

Hi Poacher, no idea what you mean. Could you provide a screenshot?

Not sure how to do that in ED...basically above the 'dots' that are systems in the galaxy map, some have a little orange coloured sort of half moon over the top of them, but some dont..i've never worked out what they are for or represent? i.e if you waver your mouse over a system it shows one, but they seem to be present regardless on some systems.

I believe it represents population (or not, as would be the case in uninhabited systems). Something along those lines.

I know what you mean...as you flip from system to system on the galaxy map, as the cursor pops over the little blue disc with the vertical line above (or below) to indicate the relative "height" (ascension??)...but I also don't know what they show. I did try to establish what it meant when I saw not all systems had them, but I'm couldn't see what it indicated.

I think you are meaning the mission marker. Have you taken a mission that needs to be done in that system? Check your left panel, transactions panel. If not apologies, need screeny really to answer you.

I haven't really paid attention to it, and am not in the game now to look. Could it be an indication as to whether there is exploration data available to buy for that system?

EDIT:
They are "navigation markers" - whatever they are supposed to show. If you go to the Options tab of the Galaxy Map, you can toggle "Show Navigation Markers", and those symbols will appear or disappear. They only seem to be visible out to a certain range from the selected star system, but I don't know what they are used for.

They seem utterly pointless to me, I can see systems just fine without needing orange half-circles above them.

They are an indication of what systems you can jump to in one jump, given your current jump range, from the system you have currently selected (i.e. not your current system).

Example: Your jump range is 45 ly. You are in system A, system B is 40 ly away from you, and system C is a further 40 ly straight away from B:

A ...40jy... B ...40jy... C

If you select / hover over your current system (A), B will have an orange arc but C won't,

If you select / hover over B, C will gain an arc.

I only found this thread because I googled "meaning of orange half circles elite dangerous"
You've accidentally stumbled upon a question that still needed answering it seems.
But when you are googling anything about Elite, it is extremely important to check the dates. 90% of stuff that is year or more old is no longer valid. Elite do be like that. :D

They're on every star system marker everywhere, every star type even unpopulated systems out in the black. I'm under the impression that they're simply part of the map design.
You'd be better off trying to find out where Raxxla is.

You can take screenshot by pressing F10. When in SOLO mode you can also take high resolution screenshots by pressing left ALT and F10 at the same time. Default location for saved screenshots should be C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Pictures\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous. Be careful with High Res screenshots, you might end up with bunch of huge files on your drive. LOL

When you have any kind of filter active on the Galaxy map, some stars will not show, unless you choose to have these markers visible. Choose say to display only imperial systems, and you can still target the other ones through these half circles.
