Ordered one of the new VKB Gladiator-K sticks

I've been wanting to test out using dual joysticks but the options have been pretty limited unless I wanted to plonk down a good chunk of cash. Then I saw that VKB has just come out with their new Gladiator-K which combines the base of their old Gladiator Mk II with a Kosmosima grip, and it's about half the price of other L-hand options. I'll let you know what I think of it once I get it and have a chance to test it out.

Following ! Actually got the T16000 which works perfectly fine but I'm keeping an eye for a better option in the near future. Love the lockable twist on the VKBs because when I'm playing DCS World I'm using rudder pedals so no twist but in space sim twist is a must.

I didn't have much luck with the T16000. The twist axis on mine got flaky within a week.

Yeah read a lot about this problem but fortunately both my throttle & stick still works perfectly after 400-500 h. Only adding some grease from time to time.

Are you planning to use the throttle on the Gladiator or you'll have a throttle + stick ?

I'm planning to use the Gladiator as a left hand stick, so the throttle will be on the Y axis of the joystick. I also have a Virpil MongoosT50 throttle that I'll use in supercruise, that way I don't have to continually push the stick forward unless I'm doing maneuvers. I'm not sure if I'm going to assign anything to the throttle axis on the side of the Gladiator.

My planned setup is Virpil Alpha on the right hand, and switching between the Gladiator-K and my Virpil throttle with my left.

I had twin MongoosT-50s, which were brilliant. I understand what you mean about the throttle in supercruise. I bound one of the hats to 0%,50%, 75% and 100% throttle, which helped a lot, but it was too easy to accidentally override that when I used the yaw on the X axis and pushed the stick slightly forward or back at the same time, which annoyed me. I therefore bought a CM-2 throttle and Delta right hand stick, but I'm really struggling with them. I wish I hadn't changed now. Yesterday, I managed to get an order in for the Alpha stick, so I can go back to twin sticks without the throttle/yaw problem or I might persevere with the CM-2 throttle for a bit, but I think it's too big for my hands

Good job getting an order for an Alpha. I had wait six months for mine to finally ship, but they've since changed their order system. They still sell out really quick though. If you've got small hands, you should know that the Alpha grip is pretty "girthy", at least for me, and I've got big hands.

I've got the older V2 version of the Virpil throttle. It's got a bigger base, but a smaller grip. Too bad they don't make it anymore, it would probably fit your hand better. I've seen them come up on ebay several times, but they end up going for more than they cost new.

I've ordered one of these as well, I'm new to VKB and Virpil. Have mostly used the mid-range TM kit, currently T16k.m hotas, but after 2.5 years the Z twist is going (and twitchy rudder paddle on the throttle). In general something goes after a couple of years on the more popular brands. I hope these will last longer!

Mine has been making its way to me from China. It should get here Monday.

I liked the Gladiator Mk. II that I used before I got my Virpil Alpha. It's very well built. Really, the only complaint I had was the lack of buttons and hats on the joystick itself. The Gladiator-K solves that issue.

In comparison, I also owned the T16000 Hotas and found it to be cheaply made and prone to breakage. My TM joystick lasted about a week before the twist axis went bad.

Nice, enjoy! Interested to know your thoughts on it. Should be about a week for me, and lucky timing this was an appealing new package as I want a compact desk unit. I've been resistant to spending large sums on a new control setup, but long term, better quality internals will pay off. Cheap internal plastic parts and / or sensors will only go so far.

DHL delivered faster than they originally said they would so I just got my Gladiator-K. Here are some initial impressions:

1) It seems to be sturdy and well built.
2) The buttons on the stick have a good click and no wobble. The buttons on the base wobble a bit, but it's not enough to be an annoyance.
3) The plastic of the grip has a good non-slip texture. It's actually better than my Alpha in this regard which can get slippery with sweaty hands.
4) The way the grip attaches to the base is a bit fiddly to set up but it's not awful. You'll need a 2.5mm allen wrench (not included)
5) It's not nearly as tall as my Alpha and is more comfortable for desktop use.
6) Setup and calibration were easy with VKB's software. They have a method to calibrate it without the software, but I couldn't get it to work.
7) There doesn't seem to be any slop in the axes, I've not had to set any deadzones yet.
8) The center hat has fairly sharp edges that could use some smoothing for comfort.
9) The pinky switch can be hard to push due to it's placement and strong spring.
10) This stick is a good fit for small hands. Mine are on the bigger side and I'm probably at the upper end of the comfort range.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for someone who's looking for a good spacesim joystick that won't break the bank. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Great, thanks for the feedback and pics. Nice setup btw. Hope you're enjoying it!

This seems like good news to me, because I think I've made the right choice. The Virpil is way too large for my setup, and probably my hands.

Will double check for the right allen key but I went for the Premium grip so I think it might be included.

Thanks again, fly safe (and with extra precision hehe) (y)

One other thing, in case it's of future use for somebody and regarding using a second stick as a throttle. I saw on YT that the Gunfighter Mk III base can be set not to spring back, so it be used exactly as you would expect for a throttle. Can find it again if useful.

My stick is basically the same as that, I bought the gladiator, the SCG grip and the conversion kit to allow the fixed stick & base to be converted to take optional grips, in total mine cost around £200 (£90 stick, £90 grip & £20 adaptor).

The base is great, doesn't feel like I bought the cheap version at all, the issues I've had have all been with the buttons on the handle wearing out, being ergonomically poor (buttons hard to press or in locations that are a stretch to get to), and 3 out of the 4 spare springs I got with the adaptor kit have broken, I think they are probably designed for the premium base & slightly too short for the gladiator base.

But no flickey yaw, and the thing is designed to be taken apart, unlike the TM T-16000 I had before so the issues it does have can at least be fixed :)

I have mapped my left stick to thrust forward. While keeping my throttle mapped to the throttle axis.
Throttle is great for supercruise, it got old real fast holding a stick down.

And it's one more device for more buttons and other binds.

I was surprised at how little adding the second stick changed my "normal" way of flying if I just use the throttle. I kept almost all of my keybinds the same except I changed the thrust vectors from my mini stick on the Virpil Alpha to the VKB axes. I also programmed some of the buttons on the VKB to mirror functions on the throttle so I can do them whether I'm using the throttle or the stick. All I have to do to change controls is zero the throttle and grab the stick.

Using the second stick for maneuvering hasn't been as difficult of a transition as I thought it would be. It's not second nature yet, but I don't find myself smacking into things either. All in all, I think the VKB has been a good purchase.

I was planning to do that with my old Gladiator Mk. II and was just waiting for the conversion kit to be restocked, but they came out with the -K instead.

My immediate thoughts in comparison on to the T16k.m stick after receiving it, setting up, and calibrating. I have not tested in any apps such as ED, DCS or SC yet.

1. Lovely base. Heavy metal base plate with four rubber grips, sticks to the desk with zero movement. The base is the exact same depth as the T16, but slightly narrower. Therefore it fits exactly where the old one was.

2. Premium grip is all plastic, so inevitably feels cheaper by comparison due to the lightness, but nothing wrong with it. It is slightly taller than the T16.

Installation looks simple, but agreed was slightly more fiddly than expected. When setting the twist using the fasteners and hex bolt, the pin connecting the base and grip came out again, and caused minor damage to the plastic on the bottom of the grip, but nothing consequential.

3. Buttons and switches

Grip buttons - feel solid. Pinky (shift) therefore needs a good push, you will not be pressing it by accident.

Hats and ministick all feel good. The ministick is actually the one on the top left, I assumed it to be the grey middle thumb button, which is just a hat.

Trigger - perhaps the one thing that I like more on the T16, but I'll see after some gaming. T16 has a clear solid click which feels strong, whereas the VKB is much softer. I wouldn't say it's cheap, just different. I can't tell where the second stage is at all though.

The rapid fire second trigger is essentially a two way click hat / button, you can push it forward / up or backward / down, however you would prefer to describe it.

Base buttons - solid click to all of them, very slight play in the side to side but nothing that bothers me. The eject button feels the cheapest of all of them, slightly ill fitting but still not a big deal. I won't be using it as a throttle, but the throttle slider is definitely better than the T16 stick's.

The Premium grip comes with a second palm rest with a few extra mm depth, but for now I don't think I need it. I can reach both the upper reaches of the hats, as well as the mid thumb hat and pinky button as it is. It also comes with a replacement button and hat for two positions, and you can open the grip and swap them without affecting the warranty if you prefer those.

4. Stick control - I didn't mind the T16 gimbal / cam+spring / whatever it is called. By comparison this one is a little softer with less resistance on all three axes. The twist feels very nice, and just strong enough that you won't do it by accident.

5. Calibration - I plugged the stick into one of my front USB 3.0 tower ports (not a motherboard port at the back), as I would with my T16, and the auto-calibration worked fine without problems first time. I'll need to test game responses of course.

6. The box says Limited Edition. I was not aware that the K will be in limited in any form, but perhaps it will not always be available as a single package.

I'm using it conjunction with the T16 TWCS throttle as before, so off to test the lot in game. Hope that helps (y)

Edit

7. I've now tested in games for a couple of hours and I'm very happy. The control is very easy and precise, with a high quality / 'expensive' feel, for want of a better description. A step up from the T16 and feels really good.
