Potential CG - (Lore) Gutemaya vs Core Dynamics, somehow they got in a ing match, and decide to have a design competition; Gutemaya making their take on the Fed Corvette, Core Dynamics making their take on the Imp Cutter. Winner gets to take their model to market first, loser has to wait X months (6-12, based on how badly they lose the CG).
Mechanics - FDev have mentioned the 'target specific ship', so obviously there will be CZs where you focus attack on prototypes. Additionally, there be repair limpets (maybe unique to this, so it takes effort to swat them down?) and shield-fixing lasers to help keep it in the fight as they stress test the systems.
You might not even be able to find these CZs without tracking down coordinates from scanning salvage or a data point or recovering a cg blackbox... maybe require more than one, so people have an incentive to squad up.
I also like the idea of being near a megaship or ground installation, for the vibes - especially if they recycle titan bombing mechanics, where you shoot thermal vents on large structures for (effect). This could be done to stall repair ships flooding out, and give you the upper hand to take down the prototype?
Reward - instead of early access to the ships from arx, you get early access for participating in the CG - but only for the side you chose. There is also the possibility of double-engineered shield modules or cell banks or something, because they developed new shields for the prototype testing? I dunno.
Ships could be rank-locked (you're obviously grinding the rank through the CG), or possibly 'civillian' variants, as oopsy, they discover something in the the fine print of their contracts which means they can't develop military ships for other powers. Replace the military slots with something, possibly an in-setting excuse to introduce new modules, like a multi-vehicle bay or enhanced sensor suite or something.
Reasoning - I want 2H Corvette slows 2ith Imperial Aesthetic/flight pods... and I suppose a more Federal Aesthetic on the Cutter would be neat. Either which could just be done with Cosmetics but nyah.
