OSVR any good

Been thinking about this - my PC only rocks an AMD R9 270 graphics card. It seems likely the new HMD will - as well as being more expensive - require a more meaty PC to play with. Like I might need a new GPU, or even a new CPU (effectively a new computer). I might be better off with the older model (1.4), which is also much cheaper....

Hmmm.

What is your CPU, I have an i5 2500k at 4.2ghz and hoping that I don't have to upgrade it.

Tempted to order the 1.4, rather than the 2.0

Not sure my computer will make best use of the 2.0 as the GPU is a bit limp. Plus it's a lot more expensive, even when you don't factor in the cost of a new GPU.

Only question is. 1 is the 1.4 crud. 2 will software support for it stop now the 2.0 is out?

So all the stories about hacking this and that for days were a bit misleading - if you haven't suffered a head injury in the last month you should be up and running with OSVR in about an hour. Everything you need is in the box and on youtube/reddit.

There is one yt vid by Robin Renaud that has pretty much all the steps - for me there were a few unexpected driver failure notices in the system tray and some win 7 v win 10 differences, but nothing a reboot and/or reinstallation couldn't fix. You need steamvr running in the background but I don't think you need to launch the game via Steam if you set up extended mode, osvr as secondary, select windowed, and HMD with Speakers.

I found the same video as you, from Robin, and am having immense difficulty getting the HDK to cooperate. It cannot update the firmware on the HDK, the compositor on SteamVR will not function, and I've tried everything I know to try and force it to work. It also will not pick up the headset on the IR Tracking camera. OSVR's spinning cube demo, etc.....work fine, and the headtracking was smooth and precise, minus actual changes in my positional coordinates. Anything past that, doesn't work.

Is there something I'm missing? I'm using the 1.4 HDK.

Things are about to change radically with OSVR now as the 2.0 is coming out next month. Might even consider that over the Rift.
Just have to wait and see some reviews before i dare to press the order-button.. :p
