I've stickied the thread and well see how it goes :)

it's a split decision on whether to have this wafer thin thread, but if it keeps things tidy on here I'm fine with that :D

And as for best sci-fi movie of all time. its got to be 2001 surely?

2001? yeah that's a good call, though I remember watching it on betamax back in the day and being very bored. Revisited later and loved it. Not a patch on spaced out hippies in space though! (Dark Star).

Cheese!, on toasted bread products, with a splash of worcestestestester sauce!

Absolutely. Much better than the book too, IMHO, which is very rare.

You have to: watch the film, then read the book, then watch the film again. The book tells you what the heck's going on at the end, but the atmosphere and the lonely coldness is much better expressed in the film.

Anyone else disappointed and confused when it wasn't remastered and re-released in 2001? I was waiting for it to reappear at the cinema :(

Inspired to cast Leonard Rossiter in it, too! Always amuses me.

Problem with the original book is is that the plot is a bit different from the movie. I believe they issued a book after the movie that follows the plot of the movie. I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I'm always realy fired up to watch it but my eyes mostly are closed and I am lying flat on the couch near the end.

I was lucky to catch a rescreening in the cinema's here in The Netherlands a few yers ago.

Other Hard SF movies of note for me are:
Blade Runner, Contact, SW: Original Trillogy, Moon, Alien, Aliens, Star Trek: First Contact.
