Newcomer / Intro Outfitting

So I am trying to upgrade my Cobra MKIIIs shield generator and the one I would like to upgrade to is redded out and the reason given is " hull too heavy for shield generator"?? What does this mean, :S do I have to upgrade the lightweight alloys first or what? This really is the area where at least some sort of basic ship and UI manual is given out.

Many of the upgrades for ships have limits like this, In small print they will give the limits of the item. They are made for the different sized ships. It's like tires for you car. There is a standard size for that make and model. You wouldn't try to motorcycle tires on a Chevy pick up.

Exactly, take a look at the size of the shield you are trying to acquire and compare with the size of your own. Make sure the shield you buy is at least of equal size.

See page 99 of Forgers manual: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34437

Look at the current and maximum class size of your shield and then compare those with the class of the one you are trying to buy. Most likely it ll show that the one you are trying to buy is smaller.

The Cobra MKIII needs a size 4 shield generator. Look at the number on the shield generator (number is size, letter is quality. ) Most shield gen with size 3 or below won't be powerfull enough to work on the Cobra.
As for the size, each slot on your ship has a size as well. You can't fit a size 5 upgrade in a size 4 slot for example, that's why you can't have a size 5 shield gen on a cobra. Some upgrades have other limitations : You can't use a size 3 shield gen because it's not powerfull enough, but you can perfectly fit a size 2 cargo in a size 3 slot if you want -cargo as no such limitation.

Thanks folks and thanks for the link viajero just reading through the outfitting part now, makes a bit more sense when you know what "rating and class" mean.
