Newcomer / Intro Overcoming Shields

I just started playing yesterday and I am trying to get through the tutorials. I am currently working on the basic combat tutorial. I have destroyed the unshielded drone but I am having problems destroying the shielded drone. I am using my pulse laser but it doesn't seem to matter how many times i hit it. I am unable to bring down its shields. Any suggestions?

It doesn't matter how many times you hit it. It is how consistent you are at hitting it, how much damage you do per unit of time. Shields on any vehicle in the game have ability to regenerate (better ones regenerate faster) so you have to keep damaging shield faster then this shield is able to regenerate. If you hit it once, loose target, then hit it once again shield will most likely recover between hits. Another thing is the firing distance. Lasers losing their effectiveness with the distance (pretty much any weapon in the game does), it is called Falloff Range. In order to hit target harder you have to get closer. Stock pulse laser has Falloff Range only 0.5 KM, which means further than 500 meters you loosing your laser's strength. So here is what you need to achieve in this tutorial in order to win: Get closer too the target and try to keep your distance at least under 1KM, put more pips into the weapons so you can fire longer (if you have to) and try to stay on that target while firing as long as you can. Keep it in mind that your ship has much better maneuverability when your thrust is within the blue range on your HUD. Good luck.

All good suggestions.
But yeah - stop doing tutorials for now, I'd say.

Seriously, it is not a good idea to get hung up on a tutorial. I guess you've done the basic ones? So you know how to take off and land, how to navigate from system to system and from planet to planet, you know how to use the SRV (if you have Horizons),... honestly you know everything you need right now. Get into the game. Start doing some missions, fly around a little bit, you'll see it's not that bad. If something attacks you, run. Just hit the boost and then jump out of there. And even if you don't manage that, as long as you stay in the stock Sidewinder that you were given, you can die over and over and it won't cost you anything. :)

In a couple of days you're going to feel much more comfortable controlling the ship. Then, if you want to look into the combat side of things, you can try the combat training again and you'll see it's much easier.

I am operating the PS4 version of the game. Is there a way to skip around basic combat training, so i can learn how to land and learn other noncombat tasks (ie mining, going on missions, ect)?

To be honest I don't even remember doing any tutorials at all. I started flying back in the early Beta days and it was basically "Learn-as-you-go" thing for me. If I failed somewhere I'd just do it different way next time. I think learning in the real world works better anyway. Another good thing about learning in real world is that you also learn about all this politics in the galaxy. How to get and maintain your reputation with superpower of your choice, how trading and mining works, how legal system works with all these bounties, fines and such and how to stay out of trouble while comleting all sorts of missions. And yes, as long as you do all your activities in that Sidewinder it doesn't cost you anything if you fail.

If it is like the PC version - you can select "skip training" in the menu screen (not the main menu).

You can then, once in your ship in the game, select specific training scenarios via the right-hand user interface panel (the Internal one).
