Painite in the Asp indeed!

Yes mining is dull and I haven't bothered with it since unlocking Selene and Bill Turner (Yes unfortunately there is another one!). However selene merely required you to mine and refine 500 tonnnes. She said nothing about hauling it round so a sidewinder could have done that bit and just dumped the results back where you found them. Much quicker and less painful.
The final 10 tonnes of Painite are a bit harder to locate but not that hard. Doing it in a High Sec system should also reduce the pirate traffic.
Well I tried a few times mining outside of RES sites, mining over 100 units without finding any painite (in stated hotspots), I then went to low threat RES sites next to them and started to find it, however even though I was surrounded by police and bounty hunters, I was pretty constantly set upon by pirates, until I luckily found advice online to fly about 40km from the entry point, to lose the pirates and still find painite...

Which indeed I did, after unfortunately being hassled by pirates quite a lot before I knew to do that...

Long story short, as far as I can see, the pirates don't care about the local security state, but only the 40km journey!! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ©²πŸ˜€πŸ€˜ .

It really is hard, isn't it?

Pledge
Wait 4 weeks doing nothing for the power
On a Wednesday go buy merits and deliver them to an already over fortified system locally
Thursday go pick up reward as you are level 4 - buy lots
Friday - stop pledge...

Yep, hard!

Of course, if you actually wanted to get involved in Powerplay, ask @Rubbernuke or similar how to do so, but, being blunt, as the simplest of gameplay appears to provide some challenge for you, PP may not be the best idea.
I'll try that, but as said, for whatever reason, I could never make any progress in Powerplay before! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ˜€πŸ€˜.

It relies upon you doing something PP related (rather than just BGS type missions), I was with Archon Delaine the longest, just because he paid well (merits) for blowing other power's ships up, and those Cytoscramblers are really useful, up close and personal...

I honestly don't understand what you're on about - 2 weeks to find 10 tons of Painite?

When I was mining a lot, I filled up 256 tons of Painite in an hour or two. You don't need to go to a RES, they can be found in hotspots in metallic rings all over the place. https://edtools.cc/miner lists all the hotspots. And even lists the sell locations where you can easily get almost 200k per unit.

Well it was more like one week and indeed eventually RNJesus was kind to me and I got want I needed in about one hour from two asteroids, but it was all blind luck!

Before that, I spent easily ten hours searching for it around know hotspots and has only found 2.6 units from what felt like about 200 asteroids and certainly around 10 containing painite!

Maybe the Devs turned down it's spawn rate in recent years or maybe they didn't as indeed I found years old posts of people having similar trouble to me finding it, while at the same time, I found all manner of other valuable minerals! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ€·πŸ˜€πŸ€˜ .

Yes, when I was mining Platinum recently there seemed to be Painite all over the place in the hotspot.

Same here, when I do go mining in 256T conda I go with Surface and Core Mining setup - I never do sub-surface - waste of time.
I mainly go for Platinum and Osmium and Painite is in this ring also, I sometimes also take the Palladium.
Getting good at it is easy and there are and always will be mining missions for high paying minerals such as Bromellite/Musgravite and crappy things like Cobalt, Lithium Hydroxide, etc.
I get 60M/hour mining for just these as they all can be sold over 220KCr/T.

You MUST be in Metallic (Pristine) ring (always the A ring and never in B ring) (Metal Rich is no good), and Pristine is for the best quantity - you get up to 66% content of any of these and I disregard any asteroid under 20% as it takes the same time as those over 20% but with less tonnage yield.
You must also use the prospector limpet which increases mining yield per asteroid.

OP - note once you are skilled at mining, I and many others get 60M per hour, yes, 60M per hour - my FC upkeep is 25M per week - all services and I now have 2 years upkeep on FC (2.6Bln) and 10Billion cash due to the Tritium Mining CG last year - did you not see it - it was before the live/legacy split, some people made 20Bln one week!.

I'm starting to wonder if you're using prospector limpets.
I do most of the time, though sometimes you get bored, not finding the ore you want and shoot any old rocks!...
(In particular when one of my objectives was to mine 500 units of anything, though I was focused on painite πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ˜€πŸ€˜)...

However at least my first few sorties, I hadn't brought enough limpets, to prospect and collect particles as well for too long, using most of them to collect only (while as you probably know, the amount of product you get for materials used if you synthesis them isn't worth it unless it's an emergency).

Also the weird bug where the ships' computer announces that your prospector limpets has failed* an instant after you've fired it is quite annoying and kind of dissuades you from using too many! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ©²πŸ˜€πŸ€˜ .

(*Which will surely never be fixed in "legacy" mode! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ©²πŸ˜€πŸ€˜πŸ€ž.)

That "prospector limpet failed" thing is annoying. I think it's referring to a previous limpet which is replaced in the controller by the one you just fired. It's a pointless notification. You can turn it off in the audio options, but you turn off "asteroid depleted" at the same time!

It's not a bug. the limpet that has "failed" is the previous one, because the controller can only control a limited number at once. The previous one remains active until the new one is launched. Some controllers can keep multiple limpets active but it's only usually two (might go up to 3 for really gold-plated kit?).

One interesting wrinkle used to be that the cargo hatch briefly closed when each prospector limpet was launched, resulting in your ship suddenly lurching into higher acceleration if you were moving towards an asteroid at the time - with potentially damaging consequences (either ramming the limpet or the asteroid!). Luckily they seem to have fixed that.

While I said it would probably be a long time until I went shooting rocks again, I actually went out with my laser pickaxe again a few times over the last few days! 😯🩲 ...

Firstly, after unlocking Selene Jean, she in turn unlocks Bill Turner, who requires more mining to unlock (50 units of Bromilite or whatever it's called), however I need to check with the other engineers I've unlocked, but I've a feeling that he doesn't offer anything that any of the engineers I've already unlocked don't, I think he might be another "duplicate" engineer, so unlocking him might be unnecessary for me πŸ€”πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚ ...

Anyway, I took a mission to mine some osmium (or whatever it's called), but I had some more "fun ' with bloody pirates, while I was at it! πŸ˜―πŸ˜‚πŸ©² .

More to follow.
