Painite mining

I should start by saying that ED is far and away my favourite game ever.

However.

In 3 years of playing I've never mined before because I thought it looked a bit dull. I've now had to start painite mining to unlock Selene Jean and upgrade my armour. I was wrong - it isn't a bit dull. It turns out it's the most insufferably dull and irritating and fiddly and dull and repetitive and dull and unrewarding gameplay I've ever experienced. I'm pretty sure that if I got a copy of War and Peace and changed every word in it to the word 'dull' and then read the whole thing out in a dull monotone it would be a less dull experience than having to mine Painite. It's doing my head in.

I've watched some YouTube tutorials on it and they seem to consist of people hitting the pulse wave scanner twice and finding an asteroid bursting with painite or void opals or whatever they're looking for. I spent about 3 hours in a painite hotspot today and found none. Not. One. Ton. Not one. Zilch. Zip. Less than one. Is that normal?

I don't like shortcuts in ED. I never do the "dodgy" gold rushes or watch videos on how to earn 250 million an hour or whatever because I want it to be a journey and I want to feel like I've earned the rewards. That said, if anyone could give me a shortcut to unlocking Selene Jean, or any helpful hints and tips to get past this soul destroying monotony I'd be more grateful than I can adequately explain. At this stage I'd take a cheat code. Ta.

tl;dr: You need laser mining.

To get an invitiation you have to mine 500 tonnes of ore - that doesn't need to be sold, just mined. So point your lasers at a rock and scoop everything up.

If you've done that, or once that's done, you need to provide Selene Jean with 10 tonnes of painite. That's easy enough, just find a metallic ring and shoot everything with your lasers until you've refined 10 tonnes.
You'll get a better yield from the rocks with prospector limpets but they're not essential.
The important thing is a metallic ring and preferably pristine. I think there's still one at Omicron Ursae Majoris 3A, that's where I did mine.

What ring types have you been looking in.
Core mining Painite is best done in a Metal Rich ring HS and you need a PWA to find Cores.
Laser mining Painite is best done in a Metallic ring HS and you only need a prospector limpet controller, not a PWA.

I love mining. I do about an hour a week. I also love the easy 100 million per hour.

If you do it too much, just like anything, it gets boring. Keep it short, sweet and to the point.

OP, your frustration is that of a mining noob. Everyone feels this way at first, because everyone does it exactly wrong the first few times. Take time to learn what you are doing wrong and it gets really easy.

Thank you for all your replies and help. I'm a little calmer now :)

From what you have all said I've come up with a 3 point plan:

1. Go laser mining in a pristine metallic ring and just pick up whatever falls out of the rocks until I hit 500.
2. Buy 10 tons of painite from the nearest FC (I didn't know I could do that).
3. Point my mining Python towards the nearest star, put a brick on the accelerator and wave it goodbye forever.

Thanks again.

If you are at a Painite hotspot its worth trying laser mining. My usual routine for a painite hotspot is to drop in somewhere in the hotspot where the bands are the brightest yellow, once in the rocks I set off in a direction (usually towards the centre of the hotspot or towards the planet) and then start pinging off prospector limpets one at a time. Sometimes I have to wait 10 or so rocks but I usually find at least 10% Painite rocks, then its just a case of open the cargo hatch, put 4 pips to weapons, and fire the mining lasers and release the collection limpets.

At a good double hotspot overlap I can usually grab 100 ton / per hour, and clearly I am no super elite miner, but its pretty relaxing for an hour flying around the rocks pining out prospectors and looking for high % rocks.

I think my biggest mistake was thinking that I had to use deep core mining to find painite. That's what all the tutorials use on YouTube. Thanks for the info!

Best keep hold of that Python. Bill Turner wants 50T of Bromellite...
Oh, for the love of...

let me check my notes, i might be able to help you there
yes, there it is:
Bro3 Col 285 Sector VH-K b9-2 | 5B

What that means is: There is a Bromellite triple hotspot in the system Col 285 Sector VH-K b9-2, Planet 5, ring B
You need a mining ship equipped with a DSS and you need to map the ring first
Also for fast mining make sure you have A-rated prospectors (1A is good enough, 3A is better). At least 3 collectors (6 are better) and 2 medium mining lasers

Now post Overalping-Hotspot nerfs i dont really know it triple hotspots are still the thing - probably not - but it is certainly better than dropping in a random ICE ring and hoping to find Bromellite

^ too bad there's no Gold hotspot, not even a simple non-overlapping one, huh ?
Because Lei Cheung wants 200 tons...
Have fun, OP

It's OK, you can buy Gold directly at a market

Oh come on... that text is too small... OP - just buy the Gold :)
And you can buy the Bromellite too :) (that is if you find a carrier willing to sell it)

Damnit, I wanted to see how many tons of Gold OP could mine before losing his mind and buying the rest (about 130 tons personally)
