Subscription fee for what? The game does not need funding by the gamer anymore, it's not cost intensive running any servers etc. I payed money for the game, done! If they add more content, it's up the them to pay for the development costs. There was a time in the computer game branch when DLCs were for free. Even Battlefield released free maps. Now it's 50 EUR extra. So I pay 100 EUR for the same stuff instead of 50!

Yeah it's starting to get quite crazy with this, look what fromsoft did. But as long as people are willing to throw their money away it will happen.

Well, I guess people will vote with their wallets won't they?.. No one is forced to buy anything after all.

Indeed, if FD deems, the revenue from these skins is too low, i'm sure they'll look at their pricing policy and adjust accordingly.

In the meantime it's up to the individual to keep their wallet closed, if they feel the asking price is too high, or wait for a sale.

I am not into skins at all, but may consider other items from the shop at some point.

When/If i do, i'll see if i find the asking price to be worth the product....same as with any other purchases i make really.

Nothing wrong with the OP though, he states an opinion and we're free to agree or disagree.

For what it's worth, 3-5 £ for a paint job does sound expensive to me too.

At least these skins don't give the buyers any ingame advantage. Which makes them infinitely more tolerable than....

...a $18.000 "Completionist Package", just to give an example. There, I said it. Hit me with the hate, I can take it! :)

No reason to hit you with hate.

Pricing discussion aside, i'm sure we're all happy that FD only sells cosmetic items and not actual game changing stuff.

And I was trying so hard.

Oh absolutely. I remember they were thinking about selling credits with real money, which I really hope they will never do. I find that what planetside 2 is doing (selling you guns and cosmetics) is very much borderline, but at least those weapons are all 1) unlockable with reasonable amounts of time and 2) mostly sidegrades, not just straight upgrades.

I can't see this working in Elite, because the way weapons work in ED is definitely a progression of upgrades, not sidegrades.

I just bought two skins (before I saw this thread) - a pirate skin for my Python, and a Gold Pharaoh for my Exploration Asp.

I'm happy to add a little more cash to FD's pockets.

I don't know who is the commercial "brain" behind the elite market place, but without being too rude, it has not got a clue.

Firstly let me say, I waited 30 years for this renaissance, and I am very happy with the game, in fact my wallet is sympathetic to the on going financing of the game to keep it subscription free and avoid pay to win.

I would love nothing more than to fire the queens head at FD, but some inkling of value for money needs to be on offer. £4 for a ship skin, one, singular, is crazy. You want me to pay several times the game cost to make my fleet look nice?

Clearly, this is no good for me, and probably not good for FD either. What you need is too embrace the concept of MICRO TRANSACTIONS. Lots of them. It costs little to produce the skins. If they were a trivial amount and there were exponentially more choices, I imagine revenue would go through the roof.

People would drop 5 quid on skins if they could either 1. use the skin on any ship, or get half a dozen for that fiver. What we need is about 20 or so designs and the flags etc for each ship, maybe faction based stuff in support of powerplay, certainly loads of decals.

Maybe even the Warframe approach where you buy a palette and can colour different zones on any ship?

Something needs to happen though, because the choice, price and relevance of the skins is a great let down.

Some people truly do amaze me.

The bottom line is... IT'S OPTIONAL. Sooner this OPTIONAL method of supporting the game than the COMPULSORY subscription model. If you want to prettify your fleet, damn well pay for it. Buy one a month if £4 a shot is too much for you. Would you still be complaining as loudly if you had to pay upwards of £9.99 per month for a subscription.

Some skins are expensive. But give an impact to a skin in the game. Give a meaning to be an owner of your paint. When we have a car, we do not change the skin every week ...

Correct me if I am wrong, but each ship has a texture applied to it during programming. This texture is X colour.

To apply a paint job, you are just tweaking X colour to something else, then correcting any artefacts when rendering. More complex designs such as flags or similar will take longer

If you can do this for all the other ships, I'm not sure why you can't do it for the Anaconda also? Even a few simple changes in colour would be better than nothing...

My only disappointment with the current sale is that it doesn't include skins for any ship I'm currently flying or planning to fly. I'd gladly pay £1.50 for a single Clipper or Vulture skin, but they only have the £5 Vibrant packs.

ED does not use a simple bitmap for it's textures. They are vectorised (which future proofs them for high resolutions like 4k) afaik. You can test this by looking closely at the writing on the engines of ships. It is still perfectly clear even close up

You never 'correct artifacts when rendering' on any 3d texture. There are many layers of work to producing the correct colours, lighting and reflection to make sure it all looks correct and like it is made of a suitably hard metalic material.

Skins take a lot more work than your average game and they don't look pixelated (pixellated?) at close range any resolution.

If it were as simple as sliding the colour mixers we would already have 1000's of skins.

The Anaconda will get it's paint jobs (eventually). Let's hope sooner rather than later *waves cc at fd :)
