Patch 1.3 - PVP centric again?

I think one detail is being overlooked here :

Those discovered PvP modes may come - but at the same time might have literally nothing to do with "PowerPlay" or anything else implemented in V1.3...

The day Elite Dangerous has a Combat arena is the day I stop playing, Unless its done in a very imaginative way that doesn't break in-game immersion.

Doesn't see a problem with this. It will keep the PvP crowd happy. There's probably more to 1.3 than just this.

Mind you, they will now whine that they have to travel 300LY to get some PvP!

I am really thrilled about the 1.3 update, as in the last newsletter was stated, that 1.3 will be the biggest CONTENT update so far... This waiting period will be intense...

If it's a completely separate game mode, what's the problem? Do the single player missions affect you? The only possible I can see problem is that it would draw people (or development resources) away from the open section of the main game.Like the 'debug cam' though, I'm pretty sure that some debug arenas and configuration screens already exist for the Devs to test the balance of ships and modules against each other (there was a screenshot of a Dev machine a few months ago that had loads of art and asset testing options on the main menu) - it may be a 'simple' matter of just polishing those up a bit with a front end.
.
And as FalconFly says, there's no indication the is to do with 1.3 or 'Elite: Deadly' or whatever - it's just some text strings in a hex editor view of an .ovl file that we're speculating on. :D

There would be nothing bad about a combat arena, or even a race track as long as they are sort of a closed off sports events at specific locations.
I totally agree though, that that sort of game addition has no place in the open galaxy.

On the contrary, I think it would be a lot cooler if the arena was in the open galaxy. It could be so much better than just a log-in/log-out arcade mode.

...with one being a viewer, a gambler placing bets or a participant? That would be cool indeed.

[edit] and you park your ship in front of giant hologram screens floating in space, following the game going on :) [/edit]

Yeah since the Xbox is getting involved and that mean lots and lots of instant satisfaction I think we can forget getting any thing meaningful for this game for a year or more now. This whole project is just getting so depressing. After a wonderful start its just going nowhere fast now, so much promise and nothing to follow it up. I am personally just getting really fed up with this whole game now. Its, like, how to ruin a classic franchise. We have nothing but instant action minimum immersion online games these days and now i see one of my favourite games, a game I have been waiting for for 15 years - slowly but surely turning into a thing I hate and never ever play. Its very very sad.

They havent got anywhere near producing a decent game yet and already they are developing it for the next platform. And what after that - crafting most probably, and then owning stations and fleets.

I wish I could write something positive on these boards but I just dont see anything positive from the way this game is going, they just havent added anything I want to play into this game over the whole of the last 4 months. Inf act compared to what I was playing in early standard Beta the present experience is not even half as good except for the increase in ships.

I was one of the early voices for encouraging younger people to get into this game like I got into Frontier years ago. But I meant by that encouraging them to play through great immersive gameplay that rises above the sorts of games they have got used to on Steam. I didnt mean lowing the standard of this game down to that level of instant gratification, arena battles and typical online gameplay. Oh well. Meh. Whats the use. David Braben has a vision and he will turn this into whatever that is but I think I am starting to realise that he and I are vast poles apart.

Yeah that's pretty much what I had in mind. Also, if you look at arena commander from SC, the arena is only a simulation. I would personally like it to be very real. The thrill of combat with all its glory... and all its horror.

Jeezus what is it with people hating on consoles here?

1) It's a Reddit post, who cares

2) Even if true 1.3 is a "big" update that may include arena combat amongst a load of other things

3) You people stupid enough complain about the "pew pew" crowd consider this is the third sequel to a game that required you to shoot over 6000 ships to "win"

If that would be limited to one single system I couldn't care less, just wouldn't go there. End of story.
But I very much doubt that whatever 1.3 brings to us will be some kind of "combat arena". That's just too primitive.
Combat arenas are where other <cough> minor space titles start with...

My guess is that if it ever happen it would be a separate piece of software ... like the current tutorial one

that we could run without login. But I hope we don't have that ... let all that is to learnt be learnt in Elite space.

Meh like the 6000 ship would only count if they were real players on it...

Actually this precisely what should be in open galaxy. Colonies building themselves race tracks and holding races, space combat arenas to bring in the best pilots and more importantly credits into the system. This would help bring the galaxy alive. It shouldn't be built as a separate game.

Yeah, it certinaly seems like a certain Sub-Group are really unhappy with the game. They don't like what the Designers have done, they dont like how it has been implemented by the Devs, they dont like what Braben and the Exec producers are saying about the future, and they don't like the fact that 9 out of 10 people are happy with the chanegs being made.....
.
It is probably best if the Devs focus on what they want to do, which is being appreciated by the majority of people, rather than try and cater to those who already hate the game............

I think problem with PvP arena is that people *expect* not to be punished for losing in it. If FD does open play PvP arena, either it have some reimbursing rules or everyone will be disappointed.

That whole reddit thread is speculation based on nothing more than a placeholder name for something that may or may not even be in game in 1.3. Those sorts of labels are completely non descriptive of what they actually entail and could mean practically anything in the context of a scenario in game where players are engaging other players. They could be placeholder names for another type of conflict zone, placeholders for very early iterations of ship interior scenarios or some sort of plantary landing zones. Not to mention the devs have clearly stated 1.3 isn't PvP related, but let's have another hysterical panic about something based on not very much at all.

We know its not a PVP arena, the Devs have stated as such.

My bets are that it'll be a 'MMO trinity' of sorts: tank, DPS, healer, utility roles and supporting modules, for wings. But thats wild speculation. It'll probably include an update to the background simulation(which was already the BIG surprise for launch that never materialised).
