PAX 2.3 Beta Q&A thread

will ps4 and Xbox be able to play together?

I can answer that for you, no.

Source: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=365

Will PlayStation, PC and Xbox One players ever share the same physical space and compete against one another?
That’s a desirable feature and something we’d love to do, but we have nothing to announce right now.

Also, please don't do that until the PS4 players have had chance to get used to the game. :) Maybe Season 3.

2.3 beta 2.01 includes:

  • Adjusted the amount of exploration ranking awarded from selling exploration data to be 50% of the credits value, 20% of the credits value of Passenger Sightseeing missions and 40% of Long Distance expedition missions
Is this an actual reduction in normal payout for non-passenger exploration ? Or was that 50% included just to give context for the passenger mission payouts ?

Never mind, see https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/335843-2-3-Beta-Update-2-01?p=5258862#post5258862

Will we see our NPC crew member (fighter pilot) occupy a seat on our ship? (pretty please?)

Could we have a tutorial for the new camera system? It's quite complicated to get working at the moment.

Are you planning on further developing the Holome in future with additional customisations, such as more hair, eyebrows, body shapes etc... also will there be other types of clothing such as jackets and boots?

Can we get saveable presets for Holome? I want to be able to create different characters just for fun (because it's awesome!)

Will megaships move around or are they static? For example could medical ships show up in outbreak systems, or certain ships show up to support CGs etc...

Can we fight mega ships or are they invulnerable like stations?

When do we get to see our NPC crew members?
Just see them. [yesnod]

When do we get to make ammo for our Heat Sinks?

When do we get to make ammo for Chaff and Point Defence?

The Anaconda bridge looks more naked than ever before - due to the new arrangement of seats.
Will you ever put some more stuff into it, so it looks better? :)

Thanks for all the good stuff! [yesnod]

Q: Are the weak Condor directional thrusters a bug, oversight, or intended.

If it is a bug or oversight can we expect it to be addressed before 2.3 goes live? Because currently people are already saying they don't want to participate in multi crew combat if Condors are part of the loadout.

Thread discussing the issue with videos illustrating it.

Hi everyone,

As part of our PAX livestreams I'll have Sandro Sammarco answering your questions about the 2.3 beta so far.

So - we need your questions. Please put them in the thread below.
We'll get through as many as possible in the hour.

Ed

Hello Ed, hello Sandro, I have got questions about new locations introduced both on 2.2/2.3 CQC assets & Megaships

  • What king of gameplay could we expect ?
  • Steve Kirby told us everything was not ready on time, should we wait now until 2.4 to see improvements or could you plan something in a bigger update between 2 majors patch ?
  • Do you plan to : add more VISUAL variety in stations following their economic types such as the work but that was done in 2.2 for : tourism, high tech, refinery and agriculture. We still await the others : extraction, Terra forming, industrial, service, military and colony.
  • Actually the game lack of representing surface economy within the galaxy map, is there a plan to enhance that.

Camera : recent patch 1.2 in NMS bring some stuff too.
  • Do FD could consider adding : FOV setup option in the camera mode
  • Same for filters to add more variety of screenshots, that would be cool, not to copy exactly what other has done but to give us even more tools to show how incredible is the game now

Multicrew
  • Does FD consider adding NPC crew to let people play solo ?
  • Do you intend to expand roles type : engineer onboard, scanner guy as originally planned ?

Commanders
  • Do you plan to let us add NPC (even without role) into our empty chairs on the bridge ? I would LOVE to create 2-3 characters to design my crew just to have the feeling of being a team. It will let us save more then one character and have more variety on our cockpit screenshots.

Thanks for reading.

Does FD recognise that the given in-setting Lore explanation of Telepresence for multicrew causes some major problems for Elite's verisimilitude, and for maintaining a consistent fictional setting?

Does FD accept that telepresence, when presented as an in-game technology, causes other elements of your setting to stop making sense?

For example if we can telepresent ourselves across the galaxy, why would our Commanders put themselves in harm's way by being on ships in person, when they could be controlling all their ships from the comfort of a sofa on a safe planet?

I'm sure you're aware of the numerous other things that begin to stop making sense in the new context of humans having powerful telepresence technology, so would it not have been better to have just not given an explanation at all, so your players only have to suspend disbelief once ("how did my commanders get here?"), instead of many many times ("why don't I use telepresence to do X, Y, and Z, etc etc etc?")

Thanks

Q) Is no one at FD concerned about the Lore of elite, and that instant, cross galactic, high bandwidth coms basically would render the premise of the game to be redundant? If the answer to this is no, then are you planning on changing game mechanics to allow for this trans-galactic coms to be useful? Things like selling exploration data from the comfort of my Sagittarius a* orbit. Or getting trade data from anywhere, and removing tourist missions and data couriering from the game?

Is there any plans to create areas where high difficulty PvE content could be found, with player style builds and engineering mods on NPC's.
For example, extra-hard assassination mission, RES/CZ and signal sources ?

Don't forget the proper AI from 2.1

Will text messages from enemies ("I'm gonna boil you up!") also be present as audio messages, to heighten immersion? I kind of miss the taunts you got in some of the Wing Commander games. :)

As long as there's a BIG pool of taunts to pick from, and they're not repeated too often. :)

Another vote for Alex's thread. Meticulously curated over a period of weeks, all the questions you could possibly need, filtered, organised and ready to roll.

Cool.

Thing is that quite a few are now redundant as we can answer them ourselves as of today. :p

If anyone can be bothered I suspect Alex would really appreciate any definitive answers to the questions he's got listed (so he can move them into the "answered" section at the bottom of the thread).

If I'm in a T9 and there is a nearby CG involving bounty hunting, if during this CG a Brain Tree falls over In a forest of Brain Trees will I still hear it over the sounds of my lasers?

Q. As established by both game mechanics, and in the lore, data travels between the stars fastest on ships. This is why data delivery missions exist, why we have to turn in exploration data, bounty vouchers, and combat bonds, and a major reason why trade data isn't available remotely. Given that telepresence violates one of the core aspects of the game's setting, and makes large swathes of the game's mechanics nonsensical, is it possible to drop telepresence as an explanation for multi-crew, and just leave it unexplained, like most other game convenience compromises?

Yes indeed. Give me answers and I'm here waiting to update things. I've done about 15 questions myself but sadly don't have time to address everything. The update 1 in red at the top asks and promises rep to anyone answering questions

@ED - I've started pulling the more unique questions from here into the thread i'm building, I suspect it may stay live long after this Q&A as an "open questions" repository. All of these will have "ForumsQ&A thread" at the start instead of "Forums" if you wanted to filter out.

Please, this. Telepresent multicrew requiring physical cockpit seats. Incorporeal NPC crew who die when a ship is lost, but can't project an image into a cockpit seat. Multicrew who can't drive an SRV. The unexplained absence of NPC wingmen. Love the features, but the rationales are becoming increasingly like a nitrous oxide party. Let's hope that in 3.0, all these systems are straightened out and standardised, and that one day there will be a Hair Shirt Iron Man mode where the only data that can travel FTL is SMS sized.
