Hardware & Technical PC build - comments please.

what's a fair price in your opinion? (I am happy with my purchase)
this one

Hard to say actually because it's basically a GTX 680 which is pretty old tech (was still a nice card of course). Umm, I'd guess a decent price at todays prices would be around £160 maybe, so if you picked it up for around £100 you definitely got a good deal. I wouldn't pay much more than £170 because you can get similar and newer cards for around £150.

Kinda hard to tell tbh as the 680 and 770 were in a funny place - not as efficient as the new Maxwell (Nvidia 900) cards and don't have as much memory or bandwidth as the equivalent AMD stuff (280, 280X, 285, 380). Then again the equivalent AMD stuff is pretty old too except for the R9 380 which can be got for around £150 now. That's based on the newest AMD tech and is likely similar in terms of performance and Wattage to the 770.

For Nvidia you could get a GTX 960 which is faster in some and slower in others...it's a funny card again because of how it was built. I would take the 770 over that at similar prices, but only just.

That whole price range ~£150 to ~£200 is completely saturated with some extremely varied cards. The AMD cards are real brute-forcers while the Nvidia stuff is a bit more elegant but lacks staying power.

As soon as you get to £200+ you're in a whole new segment of cards including the R9 390 and GTX 970, both of which are pretty amazing value and performance.

Don't build a PC just to play one game, that's silly. Build one that will play many games and perform as many functions as you have interests or you will find yourself using it less and less and wondering why you bought something so restricted in its use.

Sorry when did you become elected to make life decisions for people? I think it's a great idea to buy a PC for just playing Elite. I know friends who have done it and I did my second PC based on just playing Elite.

One day you will have to accept that people do genuinely enjoy this game. I know it must be hard for you but it's out there. So let him build his PC. If you have nothing worth saying have you tried not saying it?

The best of both worlds. Build a multi-function PC. And dedicate an SSD system only for ED, and an SSD system for other tasks

:)

Maybe i should have been more specific. My intention was to negate comments relating to needing a better GPU to play Witcher3 or whatever. The only game I play is Elite, so the spec has to be good enough to run that - reasonably well, everything else is a by product. i.e if i can play Elite i'll be able to browse to web, listen to music and run Ableton.

cheers

Very nice indeed. http://www.gigabyte.us/products/list.aspx?s=42&jid=0&p=346&v=24

Though you probably have already, did you remember, Thermal Paste? Screwdriver? Pair of long nosed pliers? Small inspection torch? Perhaps an anti-static wrist strap?

Cheers.

yep I have all those bits but didn't mention them as they're pretty uninteresting! I'm excited to get building and really enjoy the visuals this game has to offer.

i have built and trialled the new PC and I'm mightily impressed.

ED defaults to everything on max settings, which is better than expected. In fact it throws out upwards of 150fps wherever I am and touches nearly 300 sometimes! Plus it's pretty damn sweet with the white pulsing of the RAM & GPU.

thanks for all the input.

Go with the i5 as everyone has said.

About the motherboard there is no good reason to go with a really really expensive MB over a cheaper one especially if you stay in the same "brand" unless you intend to do some heavy OverClocking or the more expensive MB has some kind of feature the cheap one doesn't have.

Firstly can I say I still end up using AMD CPUs, so you may wish to stop reading here; I like them for the less frequent socket changes, price (and motherboard cost), and graphics on the APUs. Really though unless you need loads of cores the answer is still an i5 for most questions.

I think if you can go with a fully featured ATX MoBo it is worth it, you need a good case as well but you don’t need a new case. I’ve spent the evening on rebuilding a good quality mATX, hiding cables, and making it look nice then realised I’ll never use the PCIe 1 slot and only has one. Replacing the motherboard, especially with O/C is just time and money- so it looks nice and compact but there’s very little upgrade potential.
