PC upgrade, advice wanted!

So it's time, no not the GPU you can't get one, well I found a new RTX2080TI but LOLOLOL it's $780 USD

I want to change my MOBO as it's from 2010 (i7 4960X ASUS Rampage black) and it's really time to upgrade that part.

Ryzen 9 5900X and a good X570 board spiced with some 3200 RAM (32GB) that's where I'm at right now, i do of course gaming, however I also edit videos and stream my game play.
So what do I need, the MOBO's are so confusing I really don't know where to look for a good one that I don't have to pay for a lot of stuff I don't need.

I assume this is for a gaming PC?

If so, my advice would be to build from the graphics card up. Buy the best card you can get, then that won't constrain the types of games you can play. I can recommend AMD based systems. I built my PC for the intention of not needing to upgrade it for another five+ years so I went for a pretty high spec in the end.

Obviously, technology moves on but graphics cards are like gold dust right now. A RTX2080Ti for 780 USD (net I assume, you have to add tax to that?) imo is a good price. They used to be much more a few years back.

Also, fastest RAM not necessarily more RAM is good. Not many games these days use more than 16Gb of RAM.

I'm running a 3900X with the Asus PRIME X570-P motherboard and 4x 8GB 3600MHz RAM (CL17 tweaked to run at CL16) with FCLK at 1800MHz. No issues with the motherboard even though I saved a bit of money by not going for the top of the range. It's got 2x NVMe slots too.

No the 780 is the total price including TAX. yeah it's a gaming PC however I do use it for video editing as a hobby too.

well if i only get the GPU, then I could just keep my old CPU as it's still pretty good for a 10 year old CPU (i74960X)

edit: I see my trusty old CPU bottle neck with the 2080TI so it's time to go old friend 😞

I have this same mobo, be careful, cannot connect 5.1 speakers, I had to buy a separate sound card.
Also, wrt the NVMe slots, I believe only one is the super-duper fast one.

Good point - I'd forgotten about the sound. The ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus would be better - as it seems to have a full suite of audio sockets.

Regarding the NVMe sockets, I've got a Samsung 970 EVO in one and a Samsung 980 PRO in the other - the latter seems to perform as expected for PCIe-4 speeds.

ASUS Dark Hero

hands down winner

I built my 3900X box with the Crossfire VIII Hero, and then I recently helped my son build a new 5950X build with the Dark Hero

both machines perform exceptionally well and have 11 usb ports !!!

I studied and watched for months before making my choice and have no regrets on either build

If I do another build tomorrow - Dark Hero - no question

Excellent power management on the mobo and 11 usb ports make it worth every penney especially with everything I hook up for ED

Rudder pedals, Warthogs, 2 Cubesin usb monitors, Stream Deck, kybd, webcam, podcast mic, wireless mouse/pad

and I'm probably forgetting a couple other things

and it all works

You will have no issues using a beefy graphics card like that for video editing unless you have very professional requirements. It will do fine for editing Elite footage or gaming footage, for example. I'm not sure if editing live footage (i.e. live action etc) will be any more harsher on the graphics card requirement or not (probably the same idk I don't have first hand knowledge).

Ryzen multicore CPUs are good for video editing or any heavy PC processing task.

dark hero is asus?

Edit ahh it's Asus, well I'm looking at Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master for the moment as it gets a good review from those reviews I've seen.

I looked at that as well, but the VRM power delivery upgrade and also has fanless chipset cooler and at the time was better priced gave us the push to the DH

And as mentioned 11 usb ports

Additionally it has the dual NVME slots on the MB

We couldn't find a reason not to go with the DH

HTH

word on the street is that soon there will be launched a revised spec for x570 boards that have a different chipset module on that no longer means the need for chipset fans.
Presumably it will be an Asmedia chipset in this revised spec of motherboards rather than the amd chipset they used for x570

With regard to ram, going with 3200 ram is fine and close to sweet spot of 3600 ram speed for AMD. With AMD it helps to have ram with faster timings so the lower the cas latency the better, as this eeks out a reasonable boost in gaming performance. So look for CL16 or even CL14 memory modules.

yeah price is a big decider, $699 at amazon for the DH $369 for the GAM, ok 2 less USB but very similar MOBO.

I am indeed sure. :)

Not sure if it bothers you, but isn't this generation of motherboards the last to use the AM4 socket? As for 3600 DDR4 memory, it works fine on my Asus ROG Strix 570X E with a 3900X.
