People should really stop underestimating the fed drop ship.

I fly a FDS, and love it to pieces. It's awkward, and generally "outclassed" by similarly priced ships, but it's wonderful. Flew a python for a while, and ultimately "downgraded" back to the dropship. It's just so much fun to fly.

As far as PvP goes, I've been quite successful. I imagine someone who knows what they're doing could cause me some serious trouble, but most people see the dropship and just don't try. I've killed 3 vultures because they thought ramming me was a good plan. Not so much. The dropship is a BRICK.

PvE: I've noticed a difference. I wouldn't call it any "greater difficulty" exactly; what's happened to them in PvE is that the FD made piloting irrelevant by packing NPC-FDS full of turrets. Before, you could outmaneuver the NPC-FDS and win in any ship that was quick enough; now, no matter how good you are, it's just pure, straight attrition. From the front, from behind, from either side, diagonal... no matter where you are, if you're in range, it can shoot you. Skill is so close to completely irrelevant that you might as well just sit still and shoot at it; if your hardware is better (whether you out-DPS them, out-tank them, or spam more SCBs and chaff) then you win; otherwise, you lose.

I repeat, this is just in PvE. How they perform when piloted by a live player, I have no clue. I can see them being dangerous in the right hands.

So the NPC versions are not really any harder to beat, they just have higher hardware requirements.

The dropship actually has a pretty massive blindspot above and behind it. The bottom hardpoints obviously have no LoS there, and the side ones are blocked by that big armor plate thing on the top, and the little wings.

The drop ship is weak for its tier. There's not much else to say... its a t7 with better guns. The clipper is superior in every way and is a unique ship. It's a sad choice by the devs. The dropship could be very cool

I'd love it if frontier enabled the
in the nose. It would help the FDS stand out vs. the clipper, and give it its own role (heavy gunship).

What boggles my mind a bit is how much more dangerous are high-ranking NPCs flying the mighty Driftship than same flying Clippers or Pythons. Seriously, the latter two are (sorry, SJA) a joke. But a well-placed, well-timed Deadly / Elite Dropship has not once made me sweat like a pig in the little Scout.

As far as player-flown ones go, well, you can't underestimate any boats. Not even a Sidey.

One of my fellow commanders swears by the DropShip.

It's far tougher than the glass-jawed Clipper and makes an excellent mining ship where you can hit back if you are attacked. A poor-man's Python.

Unlike the Clipper, it doesn't need a large pad, so it can go to systems and stations the Clipper cannot.

It won't win any beauty awards and I have to question the wisdom of hand-basins in the cockpit wall (or are they urinals? eek, what a thought!), but it is tough, utilitarian and can go where the Clipper can't and can fight where the Type 7 would have to flee.

It may also turn out to be the most nimble in atmosphere (DropShip!) and ships may well have an atmospheric manoeuvrability rating which would be different from in-space ratings. Don't judge too soon!

Dropship has ok hardpoints, can pack alot of firepower, its main problem is it is supposed to land on planets. I speculate that most ships wont be able to land on planets (anaconda, etc). So as a troop transport,or bomber it might be good in the future.

The issue is that it's a fairly expensive ship that is only good for one thing - PvE combat, a task that the Vulture, at half the price, does better. It's trash in PvP, it's useless for hauling cargo and it has poor jump range so it's not good for exploring or even your standard PP undermining/opposing excursions. Yeah, it's decent in an RES, but that's not really enough from a ship with that price-tag and so many weaknesses.

Then why do their power plants explode when my python looks their way? The dropship is crap.

Yes. I can't imagine the feds successfully dropping many troops with it.
I like the looks of the dropship, but it is too vulnerable for the kind of ship it is.
The Clipper is weak too, but at least it has speed to make up for it.

The Dropship was my first ship I wanted. Once I had to the money and purchased it (1.1), I sold it 2 hours later and set my goal for a Python via T7-T9.

Now that I'm rich, I want to buy it again. Looks like it was buffed from the last time I tried it, more amour and maneuverability is 2, I was 0 when I had it. I may try it again.
It has a unique look and almost no one flys it. This makes me want it more.

I actually just pictured you in a Python staring at a FDS and then it blows up.

I guess you havent fought a decent commander in a FDS

I guess you haven't fought a decent commander in your FDS :p

Pilot difference allow it to excel, just like any ship, but statistically it is awful which is why it gets underestimated.

The only time i ever do PVP is when people interdict me and are wanting the bounty. Thats when i make them reconsider. The really only time i think about running away from players is when they are in a wing
