Performance of bigger Zoo

Im building a Zoo in franchise mode.

Until now, ive use around 10% of the map and have around 80 animals in my zoo. Ive got some smaller buildings and one huge house for my monkeys. Im playing on ultra settings with 1440p

Now i reached the point my game starts lagging a bit. In some views i really feel how my framerate is dropping and the game needs a few seconds to "reload". After work im gonna try the game with lower settings to see if this makes a difference. It feels better like in the beta, but my zoo isnt as big as in the beta yet.

Playing with 16gb, R7 2700x and RTX 2080.

What are your experiences with bigger zoos?

The first tutorial scenario lagged like crazy during the beta for me. I actually had to turn everything to medium just to make it semi-playable. In the full release I was able to play that scenario on high with no lag at all.

So there's definitely been optimization that happened for bigger zoos and higher foliage count from the beta. Unfortunately that's my only experience so far, been playing through career so haven't made my own large zoo yet.

Remember though that the number of things on screen at one time can determine how smooth things run. So I'm curious how much custom building have you been doing? If it's been minimal then that could be a concern but if you're making like, custom rooftops out of Es like Silvarett then that might be your issue lol.

For Nvidia Users
  • Open up Nvidia’s Control Panel. Right-click on desktop > click Nvidia control panel
  • Click Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings
  • Find “Planet Zoo”, you can manually add the game if it’s not in the list
  • Now, make the following changes:
Monitor Tech: G-Sync (If available)
Maximum Pre-rendered frames: 2
Threaded optimization: On
Power Management: Prefer Maximum Performance
Texture Filtering – Quality: Performance
Turn off Game Mode
Windows says that the Game mode helps in optimizing all-around windows processes, windows updates and other windows related stuff while running games if you have the game mode enabled. But this isn’t factually true, the game bar has been known for causing issues related to FPS. So it’s better to turn it off if you are not using it.
  • Click Start > Settings > Gaming
  • On the Game Bar, set “Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar” to off.
  • Now head to the Captures tab set the “Record the background while I’m playing a game” to Off.
  • Lastly, click on the Game Mode tab, and turn it off.

That fixed my issue.

Its kinda interesting. Before i did what you recommend i had around 40f fps paused and 20-30 fps while playing. Afterwards the fps increased to 50-60 paused and 45 fps while playing.

I built another exhibit and fps dropped again to 40 paused and 20-30 fps while playing. After i installed the update i had again around 50-60 fps paused and around 40 fps while playing.

I built the next exhibit and now im again around 35 fps paused and 20-30 while playing.

Everything on ultrasetting. Changing the settings to low brings just around 5-10 fps. I mean, i dont need 60 fps. A smooth game and 30-40 fps are really ok for me.

But i just used around 10 percent of the map and im already afraid to build on, cause the fps are dropping more and more, making the game laggy and unplayable soon. So what can i do? Is this really related to the buildings i created? I mean, whats the point when you give the player huge freedom and but he cant build, cause after a few buildings the game gets so laggy?

Thats my zoo at the moment. One exhibit is missing

I’d like to buy this but if the optimisation is as bad as the slideshow that is planet coaster I’m staying well away.

I have a very powerful rig but PC is unplayable with any sizeable park.

Such a shame

I recommend this site. I did everything that applied to my specs last night and have played a few hours with no drops in frames. Before this, I hit 15fps with a 1080ti. Didnt matter if I was on ultra or the lowest settins. Now im hitting 80-100fps no problem on ultra. Hopefully this can help.

Improved a lot for me, with almost 6k visitors and raining, there were some big drops in frames... Thank you..

Scenario 1 from beta to release has improved for me. Scenario 1 I am getting now 51fps average from 44fps during beta.
All settings at highest (custom beyond Ultra) at 4K.

i9 9900K and rtx 2080, 32GB ram.

Look at your CPU usage while playing the game.

mine is well only wile on career mod causing my asus anti surge to activate dosent do it on sandbox only career mode i am getting it sorted otherwise i am also upgrading it in jan i have 500w cpu..

What are the specs?

That is very strange indeed, I'm having solid performance, 100+ fps on pause and normal and fast forward speed. My park is still smaller though, 2 exhibits, 507 guests, 13 animals. 2 medium buildings. My overall impression was that performance was way up compared to planco in the update engine. Let's see what happens later. (have an i7-9700k, 16gb ram, rtx 2060).

(sorry for asking specs, didn't read other post ^^)

No prob.

I just checked the first career-mission again. Im beta it was laggy in some situations. Now its smooth, with around 40 fps.

I mean 40 fps is definitely ok for me. But getting down to 40 fps while your at the first 10-20 of your zoo.

When i build new buildings fps are dropping afterwards. Restarting the game its getting better again and back to around 40 fps. While playing

I'm already leaning towards the CPU being the culprit here for now. But it's most likely the games fault. Wait for those patches.
I had the same issue with planet coaster all the time. After some time the fps dropped down to 5-10 fps and the game was like a slideshow. Got a new PC last year and tried the same savegame on my new pc. Just 10-15 fps only too.

Some people say its related to the amount of visitors. So i tried to empty my park and even with around 500 (instesd of 8000) parkvisitors i got just a few fps more.

I think the problems are related to the buildings you make by yourself. The more and the bigger the buildings are, the more fps youll lose.

Maybe it isnt correct either, but ive got a feeling like that.

Is your Scenario 1 at a constant average of 40fps?

We both have the same GPU but its the CPU thats mostly making the difference right now.

It's true I got a I7-9700k specifically for this. It made like 20-25 fps of difference on an averagely filled map in Planco, coming from an I7-4700.
