I was able to buy a Clipper at Knight rank, chalked it up to a bug, but I believe I was friendly/allied with the faction I bought it from, so it may be that!

So kind of on topic... In the ball park? As a result of me being allied to many law abiding, imperial factions, the less legally conscious ones have turned unfriendly. I love the "do your business and leave" greeting. Is hostile next? I take it I will loose docking privileges? Shot at?

I don't think there need to be a connection between being allied to law abiding factions and the unfriendliness of the piraty ones.
I am friendly with a whole bunch of imperials due to my rank climbing, but I am also allied to a pirate/smuggler faction.
I do lot of smuggling in the anarchy system of my allies but do my bounty hunting elsewhere, and I try to avoid killing friendlies/allies and have not seen much conflicts.

I will have to check if I am getting better fuel/equipment prices. If that is the case I will start working on sucking up to a high-tech faction with good outfitting services.

Hmm that's interesting. I'm Allied with all 3 major factions but haven't tried to buy a Dropship or a Clipper because of the rank requirement.

Will try it it later on today and see what happens.

how does that work I've been working on rep with feds under te assumtion that given empire and federation are in opposition, one could only be allied with one faction.

I was surprised when i became friendly with both an independent and a federation base in the same system for the same reason, not least as doing some missions lowers rep with others..

is this working as intended?

Interesting. I've been trading and mission running in a small cluster of systems around Yawa. I'm friendly or allied with most of the Empire linked factions. As a consequence most of the independent ones are neutral and the law agnostic ones are unfriendly as if I go pirate hunting, the pirate factions are my target pool.

For the most part it's not a problem but there are a couple of good trading hubs that are in anarchy's and getting blasted by the stations on sight would be a downer. I think it's time the empire instilled some order on these lawless fools.
