Pick up Engineer blueprints for Python Frag cannon using the Mandalay (no frag cannons) cause its a better jump range?

Is it possible to pick up Engineer blueprints for Python Frag cannons using the Mandalay (which has no frag cannons) to pick them up cause its got a better jump range than the Python?

I started to make the trip way out there only to find the Python has a small fuel tank, a short jump range and its fuel scoop takes forever. Luckily I made it back to Ray Gate on fumes.

Once the blueprint is "unlocked" (by engineering at least one of the frags to grade 5) it can then be "pinned" and thus applied to every other frag cannon that you buy and equip to any ship. You cannot carry C3 frags on a Mandalay as you can on a Python. But yes, you can use any ship to go and engineer one of the modules so that you can pin the blueprint. Experimental effects have to be applied at the engineer's base however so you will have to fly the modules there and have them done in person.

Thanks. So if I understand you correctly, I cant engineer my Python directly because of the distance (from Ray Gate) and I cant use a "special delivery" ship like the Mandalay to get and deliver the blueprints to the Python because I only use the Mandalay for exploration and therefore havent and wont be equipping its hard points with any weapons. Bummer.

Heres a thought. I did some power & distribution engineering upgrades at Ray Gates Engineering shop. Are there other space stations (that are closer ) that might have an engineering section where I could do frag cannon engineering upgrades?

Im sure lots of folks have faced this challenge. I wonder how they did upgrades like the one I want tto do?

If you put a fuel scoop on the python you can take it (and it's weapons) to any engineer no matter how far away they are. Weapons are not exclusive to the ship that carries them. In fact, most modules are not exclusive to the ship that carries them. Only the hull is. If you put two C2 frags on your mandy and then take them to be engineered, those two C2 frags will work on every hardpoint of your python. You will need to pin the blueprint while you're at the engineer's base. Then, you can engineer your python's C3 frags from any station, base or carrier.

Assuming you don't have a principled objection to fitting the Mandalay with weapons temporarily:
- buy a medium frag cannon (the medium will also fit on the Python)
- fit it to the Mandalay
- engineer it
- pin the blueprint
- fly back to your Python
- take the medium frag off the Mandalay (store, rather than sell!) and fit it to the Python
- remote engineer the rest of the Python's weapons

You won't get experimental effects, but you can always go and get them at some more convenient time.

deliver the blueprints
Huh?
Blueprints for weapons engineering are nothing physical.

You can:
- take a weapon (or whatever) to an Engineer and have it engineered in place. Afterwards, you can switch that engineered weapon (or whatever) to any ship that is suitable
or
- you can "pin" a blueprint (one per engineer) and then engineer the module in (almost) any station. But again - you engineer the module, and you can move this module into storage, and move it from storage back onto any of your ships. You can even have it transferred from one outfitter to another, paying the transfer fee and waiting for the transfer time.

Only for the experimental effects you actually need to bring that module to an engineer and add the effects in place.

Excellent solution. Thank you for breaking it down for me.

I did put a fuel scoop and I circled the sun a ridiculous amount with little to show.
What grade and size of fuel scoop? Check your build e.g. in Coriolis - a 1E scoop will need a quarter of an hour to refill the Python Mk.II's tank, while a 6A scoop will do the job in 18 seconds...

LOL! Yes, I modified the load out on a pre-build just the way I wanted it and only had an E slot available. I guess I need to learn to improvise ways to get things like this done. I could have always freed up a 6A slot for the trip then stored the scoop when I was ready to finish the build and go intro combat.

Do you know there are star types? For example M is like our Sun.
Only the following stars can be scooped for fuel: KGBFOAM.

Some people (most I think) refer to it as OBAFGKM and use the mnemonic "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me" but I prefer "KGB foam".

So heres a related question. In Ray Gateway there is an engineering shop where I did the "spinning" upgrade procedure on my Pythons drive, power and distributor. Do other stations also have these shops that provide different upgrades? (These Engineering shops are different than the place you go to get a bigger drive or buy a warrant scanner, etc.)

Most stations have a remote engineering capability, this is where you use the blueprints you pinned when you visited the actual engineers.
They do not allow you to improve your standing with the engineer or let you apply an experimental effect.

A different option is to jump to the engineer in your Mandalay, land at a station in the engineers system and then transfer your Python Mk II to that system. It will cost you credits and the transfer time, but it will allow you to put experimental effects on as well. Transferring modules also works and is cheaper, but since the engineer will only work on a module if it is mounted on a ship, that wouldn't work for all ships or all modules.

Thats a great alternative approach. Thanks!

BTW, whats the best way to find out how much my desired upgrades will cost and if I have enough of those in stock? I have several websites I research this kind of stuff at as well as ED Copilit.

UPDATE - I found that info and more in Inara,

You don't need to go to the engineer that matches the grade of a module to put an experimental effect on it either, they just need to be able to modify it.

For example if you have pinned High capacity frag cannons at Nemo and used remote engineering to upgrade them to G5, you can go to McQuinn for the experimental, even though he only does frags to G3. You just highlight a lower grade of the same blueprint that's on the module and you can put an experimental effect on.
