Picking up goods left in deepspace...

I took a bit of (LEGAL) stuff left in deep space, in an anarchic system, then I was scanned by a Federal patrol and marked as a criminal ... how can they assume that I stole those goods?

How can these goods, taken in a system in which there is no punishment, marked as stolen?

Anarchy does not equal No Punishment. Anarchy means no central government, or recognized legal authority.

Can still have law Enforcement officials call you a criminal ;)

But i agree that picking up something floating in space shouldnt make you a criminal. That would somehow disturb the exploration experience, wouldnt it?

I've no idea how that works but I don't think the collection of canisters in ANY space, anarchic or not should be illegal. Yes I'm aware of the morality issue in RL but this is a game!

If you take on board goods that are illegal in a system and you get scanned then fair enough you get marked as a criminal. If the goods are legal then you should be able to pick them up and transport them/sell them without penalty.

I agree, especially since pirates will probably already be marked as criminals due to shooting the ship they got the cargo from. Don't see the need for marking any cargo as stolen.

Tell me about it. I just found this suicase on the concourse of my local train staion. When I walked off with it, the local security guards got all y with me. :S

You found it - you did not steal. It a moralical question if you bring it to the lost&found bureau or keep it. I wouldnt call this a crime :S

If you eject some cargo you have purchased and then scoop it back up again, does the game know that you purchased them legally or will it mark them as stolen?

I agree ...
I can only assume that ist is a mechanism with regards to Piracy ...
i.e. Pirates want yiu to drop your cargo and then collect and make off with it.

Maybe this mechanism makes lifes for pirates riskier (i.e. cargor of their victims is always recognized as belonging to the victim).

Maybe a good way to counteratc this would be, to have the ownership of cargo decay after a certain time in space (say 30 mins) ... so that people can pick up any stuff floating in space after it was there for 30 mins + without getting marked as criminal by police patrols

No, if you drop cargo and pick it up again it will not get flagged as stolen. I think it is because the cargo gets registered to your ship when you buy it.

That was mine. I couldn't fit it in the bin so abandoned it there. Some people call it littering but I call it sharing. Enjoy your new suitcase! :D

Nice idea!

Now I realize I was lucky yesterday: I scooped 2t of a commodity worth 6kcr in total from a pilot that crashed on Aulin Station, jumped through 5 systems looking for a station with a black market until I docked in Freeport and sold the goods. All of this without any interdiction or police control! Phew...
