(sadly they locked the discussion thread in News, so I'll post it here. Now someone will tell me they went live last week, if so, oops, I didn't see it mentioned  )

I was originally under the impression it was just for players of the game who we've lost over the last seven years but not that I've seen pet names and people who've had nothing to do with elite, I may have misunderstood the point.

I think it came down to some of us dying one day and nobody even knowing about it, therefore not being mentioned on the list.

It then progressed to having just any name on the list for someone we have lost.

I think roughly how it went down is that most of us assumed it would be for fallen commanders but Frontier (either deliberately or, more likely, carelessly) worded it so openly that people have started putting in family members, pets, ancestors, friends, pretty much anyone dear to them irrespective of whether they had any connection with the game or not. Too late to backtrack now so it is what it is. Interesting that it's in-game already ... I'll have to go and check it out. I wonder (sorry, but I do) how many months before the idea falls by the wayside like so many others and stops getting updated anymore.

P.S. sorry for the mildly grumpy tone of this ... no disrespect intended to anyone for whom these memorials are a comfort.

Yeah I wondered about that too.
I did read somewhere that they were going to collect names on a monthly basis and then update the list, but like you say, how long will that last.

In respect to fallen CMDRs, I think a Memorial place on a Planet Surface might be a very good idea.
A large wall (a basic asset) with the Names visible from close distance (SRV or on foot), updated every Server Maintenance Thursday.

Just CMDRs, noone else and a place to remember them.

I think that would be easily doable with minimal effort and a calm place on the ground resembling current memorial locations right here on earth being a more suitable and less abstract setting.
Adding this at some point would also avoid the mentioned issues of non-CMDRs (which can remain on the Listening Post).

Look at how some of the community responds when a YouTuber doesn't get a free alpha pass, now imagine FDev saying "Sorry, we won't be memorialising Old Yeller, the cockpit dog mascot of the Twee Dads' Collective squadron" or "please provide proof of purchase showing that your late mother played Elite Dangerous". 😉

I think it kinda has to be this way, tbh. It"s never a good diplomatic look to be in the position of judging what bereavements are "worthy" enough, and to avoid that, they either have to allow all, or none.

There's absolutely no way for Frontier to verify if submitted cmdr is really dead, only if the name is in game and last time he logged in. What are they're suppose to do? send him an email, asking if that's true?

For me this memorial idea is really weird - it just brings too much of RL into fictional game universe.

I don't think so. But people aren't good at agreeing on meanings, and I don't think fdev want to be in a position of vetting submissions.
Yup.

Personally, I've always thought in-game memorials are a terrible idea, but apparently i love to burn kittens.

But hey, it's here now, so if we're going with that, i don't think anyone, players, FD, whoever, is really in a position to say "sorry, your loss isn't significant enough to add to the game".
