piloting my tiny fighter in 2.2

Hi

fairly sure i know the answer to this but just in case...... is there any update on if i will be able to fly my mining ship to a res, set it up for mining and then fly out in my little fighter and defend it, and then my npc crew member carry on mining?

actually the more i type the more i realise it is unlikely to happen, however have devs mentioned if it is something they may like to do for a future update?>

thanks.

Probably be the other way around... you'll mine your happy little socks off whilst your NPC crew member flies out and defends you.

I think in order to have that happen, we would first have to be able to set priorities on our refineries and limpets.

Would be cool content though, I'll give you that.

Do the NPC's currently mine? I always see fragments floating around from them mining, and it looks like they pick it up but I've never cargo scanned one.

I think I did once, and they do. When I fire it up shortly I'll be just a few Ls away from a res. I'll take a scanner in there and find out.

It would make sense that they do, as it would be a good place to pick up some free cargo (if you could survive).

true... but personally i would rather be in the fighter ;)

thanks for the replies all.... i know what you mean about the other way round working but i imagine a lot of us (never say all) would enjoy defending the mining ship, at last for a little while rather than mining when it was kicking off all around.

as i typed the op i realised it would be more work than simple ai defend ship however which is why i amended to ask if the devs have said not today, not tomorrow but someday!

(more complex because like already suggested, refinery management, prospector and collector manageement and ship flying from 1 rock to the next).

i suppose it is one use for open play/private group and multicrew and sadly the solo players lose out.

This was asked of Sandro on the last Lave Radio and he said no - at least initially.

I think hiring mining crew could be a REALLY cool addition to the game at some point though.

Indeed. This is what fleshing out core mechanics is all about. Instead of us mining, we hire NPC crew to mine and we protect it.

This would indeed be awesome. If for no other reason than to just change it up a bit an to watch all of my glorious limpets do their thing.

I could basically swing doing it alone if I could keep my main ship's mining lasers going while I was in a fighter. When all the fragments are scooped I'd just go back to the main ship and move it to another roid and switch back to the fighter.

I did post a question on the Gamescom thread in a similar vein, it wasn't selected though. I would like a scout or fighter that could be equipped with a module similar to the wave scanner, for mining, so that we could tag asteroids that we wanted. The mothership would get on with stripping it whilst we searched further.

So if that's the case and they do mine, you'd think the AI script should be there and you'd be able to fly the fighter. That obviously must not be the full case but I wonder what the barrier is; i.e. balancing issue or AI programming issue...

to me it looked like switching into the fighter and back is quite easy, e.g. without docking.

so i might try the following: take a mining cutter with fighters, deploy fighter with AI, shoot rock, and while my limpets are picking up the fragments, switch to fighter.
