Pilots Federation District still empty of Commanders in Odyssey

Fired up my noob-zone-helper account again today and still I can't see a single hollow icon, not one other commander in all of the systems' stations etc. What is the point of having the noob-zone if new commanders are not started-off in there any more? Just seems like another oversight in the rush to establish the primacy / game focus of the on-foot stuff by FDEV. Did you just forget about it FDEV?

Odyssey CMDRs are more likely to start in the other starting zone (sidewinder + SRV).

Why would you expect people to start flying in open? More likely they are playing in solo.

I think you are posting without sufficient understanding of what the Pilot's Federation District was introduced for.

All new commanders (and clear saves) started in the noob-zone and on first starting were only in Open Play - Solo was only available on their next start. The restrictions of the noob-zone were designed to make Open play "safer" so as to let new players learn the game and also get assistance from others in-game.

The introduction of EDO with it's focus on the on-foot-shooty-stuff started players in the on-foot tutorial and now it seems that even clear saves will not start in the noob-zone and instead revert to the old systems (depending on the sidey loadout chosen).

So, in other words, ED (since EDO is the default) now gives people an on-foot tutorial and seems to leave the space-ship side of the game as a side-quest for a new player to stumble across. I shall have to do clear-save to see if in fact there is any way to gain the noob-zone permit, I am just reluctant to do so and find the permit not available.

It has been a while (last year) that I started a newbie CMDR. My recollection/understanding is that the choice you made about the ship made a difference to where s CMDR started. Maybe not. Likely I am getting old and senile. Still alive though!

Yes, as I mentioned, that was the case before they introduced the noob-zone and it seems that is what happens now. ¯\(ツ)

people were able to get a corvette into the zone. and then there was the epic give away and gankers had a hay day and targeted them as they left the zone.

my guess is they're retiring the feature.

I was able to start an alt in the PF zone just before console transfer. I had a choice of whether to do the Ody start and chose no, then added it letter to get the Ody training mission.
At the time it was fairly busy, though that was during summer not a normal Monday.
I'd have a look at the weekend if that's what you're interested in.
They're usually in open while in the zone switching to solo as they leave possibly.

So I have to ask this question - since when does the game force you to start in open play in the ‘noob’(I prefer new player) zone?

Because I don’t remember it ever doing that when I started playing on console.

When you first start there is no option to play open / solo / private - just "continue" (which is Open play as evidenced by the hollow icon of a commander as I launched from the Asellus Primus station). Only after you have created your commander and then exited to main menu (maybe to desktop?) and restarted are the game options presented.

I checked this tonight (sorry, last night now ;) ).

As I stated, I did a clear save, started fresh and did it several times, via EDH start, EDO start, doing the tutorials, skipping the tutorials and in every case I was not given the permit or started in the noob zone. The EDO starts found me in the concourse of some surface base, the EDH starts were the option of a surface base sidey in Asellus Primus or a LHS 3447 sidey with not much money and a 10K mission (the EDH start had lots more money* and a sidey in the hangar.)

* EDIT - EDO start has 250,000Cr (presumably in place of the "go explore" mission that was in the noob-zone).

BTW In either case the only permit you have is the HIP22460 permit (the Salvation annoys the Thargoids system).

Such a dumb idea to start with.

Well I spent many an evening in there mentoring new commanders, it was safe to have them do whatever they wanted without some twerp blowing them up without a thought - which is what often happened on their first trip out of the zone into Ay Indi for example.

BTW - Still doing this in Legacy - though not so much now.

i Got Ganked my First jump to the Mission that had you leave the starter Zone, For me it was the Second time i got ganked after i just Bought my shiney new Asp Explorer that i did not have a rebuy for yet. That i switched to Solo or Group play Only,

The idea is sound, the execution terrible. You want to create a safe zone for noobs, do it with proper security. Not an artificial enclosure; the need for the ring fence pretty much is an admission security levels are worthless.

New players all play most in open... they move solo after they get ganked somewhere for the first time.
Or after reading cryddit horrorstories.
I know few people which play in solo "because gankers everywhere".
They never were ganked despite playing in open for few weeks, btw XD
