Pimax 5k+ - cpu and handset question

Hi Commanders.
My 5k+ arrived suddenly last week. Pretty sure my current setup (see my sig) won't cut it with the pimax (except for maybe the 1080ti) so just speccing up something better like new i9 9900k, z390, ddr4 and ssd to swap the 1080ti into. Anyone here using i9 9900k and 1080i combo for their pimax setup? (or is that cpu gonna be overkill)- also, do I have to have a vive handset in order to set the pimax up (something I don't have being a cv1 user).

You don't need a vive headset, but you should get steamvr and EDProfiler can be handy: http://www.drkaii.com/tools/edprofiler/
With the very latest PiTool software (https://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/pitool-1-0-1-111-beta-test-release-for-brainwarp-1-0/16418) and latest nVidia driver, try running with your current CPU, you might have to use small FoV and turn on brainwarp but that should easily do it.

For reference I have a 3rd gen i7 at stock with DDR3 and a GTX1080, can run small FoV with medium settings, with brainwarp I can run medium FoV (150 degrees horizontal) on my limited PC... good stuff!

I am running 8600k at 4.8 and evga 1080ti.
I find small fov looks clear as a bell decent fps. Really enjoy it. Normal fov is definitely a struggle. Have to use brainwarp but I find that works well. The quality is still better than the rift but nit as good as small fov. The text is what made it for me. So legible. I would say 2080ti would be good for normal fov and decent settings but we are still a world away gpu wise
I upgraded cpu from i5 4590 and the difference was at least as good as going from the 580 to the 1080ti.
My 3rd edit...:) I reckon your cpu choice is overkill but if you have the funds....
We will be gpu bound for a generation or 2 yet by which time with 7nm coming on so strong your cpu will be seriously old!!

Thanks for the reply. I did ask about a vive handset tho - not headset. You know - the hand wand thingy. Thought I read somewhere that one is required to set the pimax up....
At least I got a pair of vive light houses on the way.

Cheers for that info

Hi,

You don't need a vive handset or a vive lighthouse to set up the Pimax. I don't have either of those yet (they are part of my kickstarter backer package, so still waiting for them to be shipped), but my Pimax 8K works fine and set up easily.

Without the lighthouses you will only get 3 DoF rather than 6, but for ED you can get by with that.

No idea about your cpu (got an i7 myself) but give the pimax a go first before splashing out on a new cpu that you may not need.

I have an i7 8700K, 16 GB, and an overclocked RTX 2080. ED runs well on my 8K, after some tweaking. I selected the High (non-VR) graphics settings in-game. The Pimax is surprisingly tolerant of low framerates (seems better than a flat monitor). The first day I got it, I played for 3 hours. Later, I bought fpsVR (on Steam) and discovered my framerate was 22-30 fps(!). I've tweaked my settings, so it's 70+ fps and it's even smoother, but it was completely playable at the lower frame rate.

Yes I agree the brainwarp does seem to work well. When it's pinned at 45 at stations it's fine. I don't have a lighthouse yet so it's a bit weird movement but not too bad

Thanks dude. Glad I don't need the handset too. My cpu is AMD 8350 it's been good so far with cv1, runs my whole motion rig as well. Gonna swap out the cv1 at the weekend and give the pimax a whirl then go from there (tho I still suspect AMD may be a bottleneck).
Vive lighthouses arrived today.

My lighthouses came yesterday and I just got them set up ready for the cg.
1st dont forget to enabe lighthouse tracking on hmd setting's. Ooops
2nd position the sensors at least 3 feet away otherwise they don't like it
Will save you 45 minutes that I spent going through google unless you knew that already

Personally I'd hold out on buying a cpu until Ryzen 3000 series launch. You might get a whole lot more bang for your buck.

I also have a 5k but paired with an i7 4770k and 1080. I find normal fov with brainwarp, 1.0 in pitool and 100% in steamvr works well enough for me. Like you, I plan to upgrade soontm.
